Evan Bennett stood near the desk with his hands visible, as if he understood that nobody in the room trusted him. Emily stood slightly behind him, one hand resting against his back.

Evan looked at me first. “Your wife knew my father was involved,” he said. “But she didn't know everything. My father didn't start this because he wanted Margaret's house.”

Carol closed her eyes.

Evan noticed. “He started because he thought he could control the money. Apparently, people who commit fraud don't trust each other very much.”

The investigator took the sleeve from Evan and examined it under the room's yellow light. Inside was a photocopy of a handwritten agreement, several years older than the trust documents we had already found.

At the bottom was a name I recognized.

Margaret.

My hands went cold.

“That's her handwriting,” I said.

The investigator carefully removed the copy. “It appears authentic, but we'll verify it.”

I leaned forward.

The document was not a transfer of property. It was a warning Margaret had written for Edward Hale.

She had described a conversation with Malcolm that occurred months before she created the trust. According to her notes, Malcolm had approached her about moving the house proceeds into an investment structure he claimed would protect Daniel from future creditors.

Margaret had refused.

Then Malcolm had said something that made her suspicious.

He told her that if she died, the people managing her affairs could change the outcome.

She had written one sentence underneath that paragraph.

He spoke as though my death were an event he had already planned around.*

Daniel read the sentence over my shoulder.

“Mom knew,” he whispered.

“She suspected,” Hale corrected when we later showed him the copy by secure video call. “Suspicion isn't proof.
