Now.”

David pushed the door open.

A narrow room waited behind it, barely large enough for a desk, two chairs, and a metal cabinet bolted into the stone wall. There were no windows. The only light came from a small electric bulb hanging from a wire.

On the desk sat a cassette player.

Beside it was a second envelope.

My name was written across the front.

I picked it up.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Sarah,

If you are reading this, the first person you trusted has already failed you.

I looked at David.

He flinched.

“Keep reading,” Thomas said.

The letter explained that my mother had anticipated betrayal within the investigation itself. The truth is that I learned to recognize who was willing to come back after they did.”

Evelyn lowered her head.

My mother named her.

She explained that Evelyn had originally given Richard information about her survival. She had done it under threat. Richard had threatened her children and husband.

But later, Evelyn had secretly warned my mother.

She had become an informant.

She had helped create the trail that eventually led to the trust.

Then my mother's voice changed.

“There is one person I could never forgive completely.”

David looked at me.

I knew.

“Richard's son.”

David's eyes filled.

“He was young,” my mother said. “But he knew enough.”

David whispered, “I knew.”

The recording continued.

“He delivered the first address to Richard.”

I turned.

David didn't deny it.

“You gave him the house.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I thought Richard wanted the documents. I didn't know he would use your name.”

My mother's voice continued.

“But David later chose not to destroy the recording. That choice mattered.”

David covered his face.

I listened as my mother described the night she gave him the cassette.

She had told him to keep it hidden until I was old enough to protect myself.

Then came the final revelation.

“The person you should fear is not the person who made the first mistake.”

The room became silent.

“It is the person who keeps making the same choice after being given the opportunity to change.”

I looked at the staircase.

Martin Hale.

The door climbing.

Slow.

Unhurried.

Martin appeared at the top of the stairs.

He wore a dark coat.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

“Daniel.”

“Martin.”

“You've made this unnecessarily difficult.”

“You helped Richard escape.”

Martin for Richard.”

“I worked to protect the department.”

“From what?”

“From what happens when those accounts become public.”

Thomas vault.

Behind her stood Richard.

And another man.

I recognized him.

The mechanic.

The man whose invoice we had found.

But he wasn't a mechanic in the photograph.

He was wearing a federal identification badge.

Daniel stared.

“What the hell?”

Martin looked at him.

“That's why Richard was never arrested twenty-two years ago.”

I studied the photograph.

The badge carried an old agency seal.

The man had been part of a federal task force.

“He helped Richard?”

Martin nodded.

“Richard didn't build the operation alone.”

“Who was he?”

“Deputy toward the stairs.

“They're here.”

“Who?”

He didn't answer.

Daniel moved toward the stairwell.

A gunshot exploded from below.

We all ducked.

Glass shattered.

David pulled me toward the wall.

Thomas grabbed Liam.

Evelyn dropped behind the desk.

Daniel fired once.

Then the room went silent.

A voice rose from below.

“Martin!”

Martin looked almost relieved.

“He's here.”

“Who?”

Martin turned toward me.

“Harold Vance.”

I felt the blood leave my face.

The man officially dead fifteen years ago sunrise.”

Then he disappeared down the stairs.

Daniel looked at me.

“We have to move.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother knew this would happen.”

He pointed toward the metal cabinet.

“She left one more thing.”

I opened it.

Inside was a small black notebook.

The first page contained only seven names.

The same seven people connected to the final account.

But beside David's name was a new note.

TRUST HIM WITH THE LAST PIECE.

I looked at David.

He began to cry.

And for the first time, I
