transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Each transaction identified a person.<\/p>\n<p>Each person held one piece of the final account.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had hidden the evidence in plain sight.<\/p>\n<p>The recipe card was the index.<\/p>\n<p>I felt dizzy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the final account is scattered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcross seven down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone&#39;s here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first door below slammed.<\/p>\n<p>Liam grabbed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere do we go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is another exit,\u201d Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p>He led us toward a narrow passage behind the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s agents moved into position.<\/p>\n<p>A voice had infiltrated the investigation from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>Someone knew every move we made.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had helped Richard escape.<\/p>\n<p>And now they knew exactly where the final account was.<\/p>\n<p>The lighthouse door slammed below us.<\/p>\n<p>A man&#39;s voice called from the darkness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah, give me the letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel raised his weapon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay where you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still don&#39;t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the voice.<\/p>\n<p>Not Richard.<\/p>\n<p>Not backward.<\/p>\n<p>Liam caught my hand.<\/p>\n<p>The letter remained pressed against my chest.<\/p>\n<p>For twenty-two years, my mother had divided the truth among people she believed she could trust.<\/p>\n<p>Now one of those people had betrayed us.<\/p>\n<p>And the final account\u2014the evidence that could finally expose Richard\u2014was still incomplete.<\/p>\n<p>The man outside called
