Shell companies. Tax papers. Letters. Books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tried.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered the old wooden recipe box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s a recipe box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDark wood. Brass latch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you open it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecipe cards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHandwritten?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny red ink?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question sounded strange.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered my mother&#39;s peach cobbler recipe.<\/p>\n<p>Across the bottom she had written a line of numbers in red ink.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone began ringing.<\/p>\n<p>David.<\/p>\n<p>I rejected it.<\/p>\n<p>He called again.<\/p>\n<p>I rejected it again.<\/p>\n<p>A voicemail appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlay it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David&#39;s voice came through the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah, I know Melissa found you.
