returned.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard had acted.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler had been manipulated.<\/p>\n<p>Clara had intervened.<\/p>\n<p>The old evidence had surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>And now Reed had been forced out of hiding.<\/p>\n<p>All because the deadline had arrived.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho paid Vance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed&#39;s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour the documents.<\/p>\n<p>The payments continued after the fire.<\/p>\n<p>That meant Vance had been protecting my father even after Detective Harrison died.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw another name.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>Beside it was a payment marked RETURNED.<\/p>\n<p>She had rejected Vance&#39;s money.<\/p>\n<p>She had refused protection.<\/p>\n<p>She had chosen evidence instead.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Reed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did she trust you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was the only person who admitted what I had done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you
