evidence room was colder than I expected.

Reynolds led us through a secure corridor while Ms. Harrison followed with the old file tucked beneath her arm.

The evidence custodian's records were supposed to be routine.

Dates.

Signatures.

Transfer numbers.

Nothing about them looked extraordinary.

Until Reynolds placed the file on the table.

There it was.

Samuel Reed.

Signature after signature.

2004.

2005.

2006.

2007.

2008.

The same handwriting.

The same clipped final stroke.

The same false signature my mother had used on the safe-deposit closure.

I stared at it.

“Who is this person?”

Reynolds shook his head.

“We don't know yet.”

“But someone has been impersonating him for decades.”

“Yes.”

“And nobody noticed?”

“Apparently not.”

Ms. Harrison opened her father's report.

“He noticed.”

We looked at her.

She pointed to a photograph.

A younger man stood beside Deputy Commissioner Vance.

Beside him was another man.

I recognized him.

My father's attorney.

Samuel Reed.

But the date on the photograph was 1999.

Reed had supposedly died in 2001.

“That doesn't prove anything,” I said.

“No,” Ms. Harrison replied.

She turned the photograph over.

Her father's handwriting was on the back.

Reed is not Reed.

I felt a chill.

“What did he mean?”

“We need to find out.”

The investigation widened.

Reynolds contacted federal authorities.

They confirmed that Samuel Reed had officially died from a heart attack in 2001.

His death certificate existed.

His funeral existed.

His grave existed.

But the body had never been independently identified.

“That's convenient,” I said.

“Too convenient,” Reynolds agreed.

The next discovery came from an old insurance file.

Reed had purchased a life insurance policy shortly before his supposed death.

The beneficiary was his wife.

But his wife had died years earlier.

The secondary beneficiary was listed as a trust.

The trust belonged to my father.

I felt as though I were walking through a hallway where every door opened onto another version of the same nightmare.

My father had not simply known Reed.

He had financed him.

Perhaps even protected him.

I called Michael again.

“You said Reed worked for Dad.”

“Yes.”

“Was he alive after 2001?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“You shouldn't believe me.”

That answer stopped me.

Michael continued.

“I'm telling you what I know.”

“Then tell me everything.”

He sighed.

“Reed was the person Dad used when he needed something done without leaving his fingerprints.”

“What kind of things?”

“Payments.”

“Threats?”

“Sometimes.”

“Evidence?”

“Yes.”

“People?”

Silence.

“Michael.”

“Yes.”

My stomach turned.

“How many?”

“I don't know.”

“You know enough.”

“I was young.”

“You were old enough to understand murder.”

“I know.”

“Then why stay?”

“Because Reed had something on me.”

“What?”

Michael didn't answer.

I pressed him.

Finally he said, “The original fire wasn't supposed to happen.”

“What?”

“Reed changed the plan.”

“What was the plan?”

“To burn the warehouse after the evidence was removed.”

“And instead?”

“He locked the doors.”

I felt sick.

“Why?”

“To kill everyone inside.”

“Who ordered that?”

“Vance.”

I looked at Reynolds.

Michael continued.

“Leonard thought he was running the operation.”

“He wasn't?”

“No.”

“Who was?”

“Vance.”

That explained the phrase.

The man who signs twice.

Vance had signed official orders and secret payments.

But why had he wanted everyone dead?

Because too many people knew.

My father.

Detective Harrison.

Leonard.

Michael.

David.

My mother.

The list was terrifying.

I asked Michael about my mother.

“She knew about Vance.”

“How?”

“Reed told her.”

“Why?”

“Because Reed wanted out.”

“Did Mom help him?”

“I think so.”

“Then why was he still involved?”

“Because people like Reed don't leave.”

The call ended.

I sat in silence.

Richard found me there.

“You look exhausted.”

“I am.”

He read my expression.

“More?”

“More.”

He sat beside me.

I told him everything.

When I finished, he said, “Then maybe this isn't about the money anymore.”

“It never was.”

“No. I mean the original crime.”

I understood.

The fortune had been the visible piece.

The real conflict was control of evidence.

Whoever controlled the evidence controlled everyone who could be exposed by it.

That meant my mother's tapes were more dangerous than the money.

We searched her old house records.

A storage unit appeared.

It had been rented under her maiden name.

The unit was still active.

I had never known about it.

We went there the next morning.

The manager led us through rows of metal doors.

Unit 218.

My mother's key opened it.

Inside were boxes.

Dozens.

Letters.

Photographs.

Old bank statements.

A child's sweater.

My father's journals.

And one locked metal case.

Ms. Harrison examined it.

“Your mother kept this deliberately.”

We found the key taped beneath the lid of an old sewing box.

The case opened.

Inside was a notebook.

The first page contained a list of names.

Some were familiar.

Some were not.

Next to each name were dates and amounts.

Payments.

Threats.

Meetings.

Then we found Samuel Reed.

Beside his name was one sentence.

He knows where the original is.

I looked at Ms. Harrison.

“The original what?”

We kept reading.

The next page said:

If Reed disappears, the original must be recovered before Vance can destroy it.

The page after that was missing.

I searched every box.

Nothing.

Then Richard found an envelope taped beneath the metal case.

It contained a photograph.

My mother stood outside a courthouse.

Beside her was Samuel Reed.

But there was something else.

In the background was a child.

A little girl.

Me.

I stared.

“When was this taken?”

Ms. Harrison checked the courthouse stamp.

1988.

I had been seven.

I remembered that day.

My mother had told me we were visiting my father's lawyer.

I had sat on the steps with a coloring book.

But there was another person in the photograph.

A man standing across the street.

My mother had circled him in red ink.

The note beneath it read:

He watched Margaret.

My blood ran cold.

She had known someone was watching me when I was seven.

I had no memory of him.

We enlarged the photograph.

The man's face became clearer.

Reynolds stared at it.

“I know him.”

“Who?”

He pointed.

“That's Harold Vance's assistant.”

“Name?”

“Peter Cole.”

Ms. Harrison opened another file.

Peter Cole had died in 2009.

But his death record contained a familiar problem.

No independent identification.

I laughed once.

It wasn't amusement.

It was disbelief.

“How many people in this story are supposed to be dead?”

Reynolds didn't smile.

“Too many.”

That evening, another message arrived.

You found the storage unit.

I stared at the screen.

Then another.

You shouldn't have opened the case.

I showed Reynolds.

He immediately asked the phone company for location data.

The messages were routed through an anonymous service.

But the final message contained something different.

A photograph.

It showed my house.

Taken from across the street.

The image was recent.

Very recent.

Someone was watching.

Reynolds sent officers to the neighborhood.

They found nothing.

But the next morning, a package appeared on my porch.

No stamp.

No name.

Inside was a cassette.

I knew before touching it that it was not one of my mother's.

A label had been typed across the front.

For Margaret.

We played it in the evidence room.

Static.

Then a man's voice.

“You have been looking for the wrong person.”

I knew the voice.

Not from decades ago.

From recently.

From the courthouse.

From the bank.

From the investigation.

I looked at Reynolds.

“Who is that?”

He stared at the machine.

Then answered.

“Our evidence custodian.”

The recording continued.

“If you want the original, come alone.”

A location followed.

An abandoned church outside the city.

Then the voice said something that made my blood run cold.

“Bring your mother's ring.”

The tape clicked off.

Nobody spoke.

I looked down at my hand.

The ring suddenly felt heavier.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The abandoned church held a room beneath its floorboards, and the first thing
