it?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“There is a cavity behind the bricks.”

My heart pounded.

“What is inside?”

“Another metal box.”

Tyler shot to his feet.

“No.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Reynolds narrowed his eyes.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“You reacted before I described it.”

“I didn't know.”

“What is inside?”

“I don't know.”

“Sit down.”

Tyler obeyed.

The second box was brought downstairs.

It was larger.

Black.

Old.

Dust gathered around the edges.

One corner was rusted.

There was no key.

I stared at it.

Then I recognized it.

My father had owned that box.

I hadn't seen it since I was sixteen.

He used to keep deeds, insurance papers, birth certificates, and other family documents inside.

“How did that get there?”

No one answered.

Richard looked at me.

“You've seen it before.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before the fire.”

Tyler's head lifted.

Reynolds looked at me.

“The warehouse fire?”

I nodded.

“My father kept it in his office.”

“Warehouse Two?”

“Yes.”

The officer stared at the box.

“How did it survive the fire?”

“It didn't.”

I stepped closer.

“Someone must have taken it before the fire.”

Richard understood.

“If that's the same box, someone removed it.”

A terrible possibility entered my mind.

Michael had always claimed he was framed.

The security system had been disabled.

The records had been altered.

Evidence had been planted.

What if Michael had been telling the truth?

What if someone had taken my father's box before setting the fire?

What if my father had known?

I pointed to the side of the box.

“There should be a scratch shaped like a V.”

Reynolds turned it.

The scratch was there.

I remembered it suddenly.

Michael had knocked the box from a shelf when we were teenagers.

It had struck a metal desk leg.

He blamed me.

I chased him around the office.

We were laughing.

Our father threatened to ground both of us.

The memory hurt more than I expected.

“It's his.”

Tyler whispered, “Open it.”

Reynolds looked at him.

“Now you want it opened?”

Tyler said nothing.

After the necessary documentation and consent, the old lock was forced.

The lid opened.

Inside were no weapons.

No cash.

No jewelry.

Only documents.

Ledgers.

Insurance papers.

Property deeds.

Photographs.

Letters.

A cassette tape.

And one sealed envelope.

My name was written across it.

MARGARET.

My father's handwriting.

Reynolds photographed everything before handing me the envelope.

Something hard was inside.

I opened it.

A brass key fell onto the table.

Then a letter.

My hands shook.

The first line made my lungs stop.

Margaret,

If you are reading this, then Michael is alive.

I stared at the sentence.

Richard moved closer.

I couldn't.

Ms. Harrison spoke softly.

“Margaret.”

I forced myself to continue.

My father admitted Michael had not burned Warehouse Two.

He admitted he had lied.

The fire, he wrote, had been arranged to conceal financial records and fraud.

Michael had discovered the operation.

He had threatened to expose it.

My father panicked.

He told Michael to leave town.

Then a body was found.

My father allowed everyone to believe it was Michael.

He claimed he had done it to protect his son.

But the people involved had become dangerous.

He had eventually created a trust and hidden money in the hope that someday the truth could be recovered.

Then came the sentence that hurt most.

I was never supposed to inherit a fortune.

I was supposed to inherit the truth.

The letter continued.

The brass key opened a deposit box connected to a name I would recognize.

Everything needed to expose what had happened was inside.

Then the final sentence stopped abruptly.

Do not trust—

The rest of the page had been torn away.

I stared at the missing words.

“Who?”

Richard asked.

“I don't know.”

Reynolds examined the torn edge.

“Someone removed the rest.”

I looked toward Tyler.

“Michael?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Ms. Harrison picked up another document.

“There's a bank name.”

I looked.

Midwest Heritage Bank.

Richard frowned.

“That bank closed years ago.”

“The holdings would have been transferred,” Ms. Harrison said.

Reynolds examined the brass key.

There were four digits stamped into it.

317.

I stared.

March seventeenth.

My mother's birthday.

But that wasn't why the number frightened me.

It had also been my father's warehouse alarm code.

The same code investigators said had been entered the night Warehouse Two burned.

“Who knew that code?” Reynolds asked.

“My years.

My father's business partner.

Leonard Hayes.

“Leonard knew.”

Tyler made a small sound.

I turned toward
