Instead, I woke with the same weight pressing against my chest. We had spent weeks uncovering one layer after another, and every time I thought we had reached the bottom, another document, another account, or another name appeared.

Andrew called before breakfast. His voice was calm, but I could hear the seriousness underneath it. He said the investigators had finished reviewing the account that had briefly appeared to belong to Mom. The money was protected, exactly as Martin had explained, but the paperwork surrounding it was more complicated than anyone had expected.

I drove to Andrew's office with Rachel beside me. Neither of us said much during the trip. The city moved around us as if nothing unusual had happened. People carried coffee into offices, buses stopped at corners, and parents walked children toward school. Ordinary life felt almost offensive after everything our family had been living through.

Andrew had several folders spread across his conference table when we arrived. Martin was already there. Grandma was not with us that morning. At ninety-two, she had been told to rest, and for once she had listened.

"The protected account is legitimate," Andrew said. "Your grandfather created it years ago. The transfer into it was authorized under the emergency provisions of the family structure."

Rachel exhaled. "So Dad didn't steal that money?"

Andrew paused. "That's not what I said."

The distinction made both of us sit straighter.

"Dad moved money without authorization," I said.

"Yes."

"He sold Lucy's cello without authorization."

"Yes."

"He gave Evan access to documents he had no right to possess."

"Yes."

"And some of the money he moved ended up in an account Martin was protecting?"

"Correct."

I looked at Martin. "Then why was Dad doing all of this if some of the money was still protected?"

Martin folded his hands on the table. "Because desperation makes people treat tomorrow like it is guaranteed."

He explained that Dad had been trying to cover old obligations with new money for years. When one payment came due, he moved funds from somewhere else. When that created another shortage, he found another source. The cello had not been the beginning of the problem. It had been the moment when his private financial crisis became impossible to hide.

Rachel looked down at the folders. "And Evan?"

"Evan saw exactly what was happening," Martin said. "He didn't create your father's desperation, but he learned how to profit from it."

Andrew slid a document toward us. It was a transaction summary, but this time the numbers were accompanied by handwritten notes from the investigator.

There were transfers between several companies. Some were legitimate. Others had been routed through entities with almost no operating activity. Several payments eventually connected back to Evan's network.

I recognized one date.

"The cello sale."

Andrew nodded.

The dealer had not simply received the $87,000 and forgotten about it. The payment had been followed by a series of movements designed to separate the original transaction from the eventual beneficiary. The cello itself had moved through legitimate channels, but the money had taken a far less direct route.

"So Evan arranged the sale?" I asked.

"Not exactly," Andrew said. "Your father initiated the sale. Evan helped structure what happened afterward."

That distinction mattered. It meant Dad could no longer tell himself that everything had been Evan's fault.

I remembered Lucy sitting at the kitchen table, asking whether Grandma had changed her mind about giving her the cello. She had been eleven years old, but the betrayal had reached her in a way no financial statement ever could.

Rachel covered her face with both hands.

"I knew Dad was struggling," she whispered. "I just never understood how bad it was."

I reached across the table and touched her wrist. "Neither did I."

Martin opened another folder.

"This is what concerns me most," he said.

Inside was a copy of one of the altered trust documents. It looked ordinary at first. The wording was formal, the signatures appeared in the correct places, and the dates seemed consistent.

But one section referenced an account that Grandpa had never authorized.

"The language was inserted later," Martin said. "Someone tried to make it look as though the trust had always permitted these transfers."

Rachel stared at it.

"Who?"

"We don't know yet."

I felt the old chill return.

Andrew quickly added, "That doesn't mean we should assume another member of the family is involved. The investigators are tracing the document's origin before drawing conclusions."

That warning mattered because fear had already changed the way I looked at everyone. Every unexplained detail had begun to feel like evidence of betrayal.

Martin pointed to a notation at the bottom.

"This document was scanned from a copy held outside the family's ordinary records."

"Where?"

"Your father's company."

I stared at him.

"The same company that billed for document restoration?"

"Yes."

The invoice Daniel had found suddenly became more important.

I asked Andrew whether Dad had paid that invoice.

"Yes," he said. "And the company that issued it had a relationship with Evan."

Rachel stood up so abruptly that her chair moved backward.

"So they weren't restoring records."

"Some restoration work may have been legitimate," Andrew said. "But the investigators believe the company was also used to recreate or modify certain documents."

I thought about Grandpa's warning in the letter.

The danger will not be the person who takes the money. It will be the person who knows how to make the loss appear legitimate.

For the first time, I understood why he had written those words.

The next afternoon, Dad asked to see me.

Andrew advised me not to meet him alone, so Rachel came with me. We chose a quiet café far from the family house. Dad arrived ten minutes early and sat by the window.

He looked older than he had only a month before.

When he saw us, he didn't pretend everything was fine.

"I know what you've found," he said.

"You know some of it," I answered.

He nodded.

For several seconds, he watched cars pass outside.

"I never meant for Lucy to lose the cello."

The words almost made me laugh, but there was nothing funny about them.

"You sold it."

"I know."

"You knew it belonged to her."

"I know."

"You knew there were restrictions."

His eyes closed briefly.

"Yes."

Rachel leaned forward. "Then why?"

Dad looked at her.

"Because I thought I had one more week."

He told us that when he sold the cello, he believed a business payment would arrive soon afterward. He expected to replace the money, recover the instrument if necessary, and tell everyone that the situation had been handled.

But the payment never came.

Then another obligation arrived.

Then another.

Evan appeared with solutions that seemed temporary. He promised introductions, short-term financing, and ways to restructure accounts. Dad accepted because every alternative looked worse.

"And when did you realize Evan was using you?" I asked.

Dad looked down.

"Too late."

He admitted that Evan had obtained copies of the estate documents and had started asking questions about the house, the trusts, and the protected accounts.

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because by then I was afraid of what would happen if I did."

Rachel's voice hardened. "You should have been afraid."

Dad nodded.

"I was."

There was no defense left in him.

He reached into his coat and placed a small envelope on the table.

"I found this in my office after Evan started pressuring me."

Inside was a handwritten list of dates and initials.

Andrew later confirmed that several matched transactions already under investigation.

One set of initials belonged to the bank employee connected to Evan.

The list suggested something more complicated than Dad had admitted. The employee had not merely processed questionable transfers. There were repeated communications before and after each movement of money.

Andrew took the envelope for the investigators.

Dad remained seated.

"Is the cello coming back?" he asked.

I looked at him.

"Yes."

His shoulders dropped.

"Good."

It was the first thing he had said that sounded entirely selfless.

When I returned home, Lucy was practicing.

The sound of her bow moving across the strings came from the living room. She stopped when I entered.

"Did you find out anything?"

I sat beside her.

"Yes."

"Is my cello really coming back?"

I smiled.

"That's what everyone is working toward."

She looked at the instrument in her hands.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Why did Grandpa make so many rules about money?"

I thought about Grandpa's letters, his careful trusts, and the way he had planned for problems none of us had wanted to imagine.

"Because he knew people can make bad decisions when they're scared."

Lucy considered that.

"Does that mean he didn't trust Grandma or Grandpa?"

"He trusted them. He just knew love doesn't stop people from making mistakes."

She nodded slowly.

Then she lifted the bow.

"Can I practice now?"

"Of course."

As she began playing again, I realized something had changed.

The investigation was no longer only about recovering money.

It was about restoring the truth.

And somewhere inside all those documents, accounts, signatures, and hidden arrangements was the final answer to the question that had haunted us since the cello disappeared:

Who had decided that what belonged to Lucy could be taken from her?

We were getting closer.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: What Dad Finally Admitted

The morning after the bank confirmed that the largest transfer had not vanished into some unknown account, I expected to feel relieved.
