him.

“Start at the beginning.”

He rubbed his hands together.

“Your father came to me three years ago.”

“What did he him.

“Why would you help him?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because I was paid.”

The bluntness of the answer made the room quiet.

“You knew it was wrong?”

“I knew it was unusual.”

“That's not what I asked.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I suspected.”

Andrew leaned forward.

“What did Richard tell you?”

“That the money belonged to him.”

“And you believed him?”

“At first.”

“What changed?”

“Your grandfather's records.”

Daniel explained that he had been hired to create a series of corporate structures.

They were supposed to separate legitimate investments from business liabilities.

But after Grandpa's death, the instructions changed.

Money began moving from family-controlled accounts into intermediary companies.

Some transfers were authorized.

Others were not.

Daniel had eventually realized that the structure was being used to conceal withdrawals.

He stopped working directly with Dad.

But by then, several accounts were already active.

“Who took over?”

Daniel looked at Andrew.

“Another consultant.”

“Name?”

“Evan Mercer.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But Andrew recognized it.

“I know him.”

“From where?”

“He worked for one of your father's business partners.”

Daniel nodded.

“He was better at hiding transactions than I was.”

I felt a chill.

“Was he involved in the cello?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He knew your father needed cash.”

“And?”

“He found the buyer.”

I stared at him.

“The private collector?”

Daniel nodded.

“He arranged the introduction through the dealer.”

That explained why the sale had happened so quickly.

Dad had not simply walked into a shop and sold an old cello.

Someone had already prepared the transaction.

But Daniel raised one finger.

“There's more.”

“What?”

“The collector wasn't the target.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“The first buyer was.”

Andrew leaned forward.

“Explain.”

Daniel took a breath.

“The cello was supposed to disappear into a chain of private sales.”

“Why?”

“To make ownership difficult to establish.”

My stomach tightened.

“So the goal was not just money.”

“No.”

“What was the goal?”

Daniel looked at the folder marked CELLO.

“To remove the instrument from the family asset records.”

Andrew went still.

“Why?”

“Because the cello was evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

Daniel looked at me.

“The trust structure.”

He explained that the cello's documentation contained references to the broader family asset arrangement.

If the original instrument records disappeared, it would become harder to establish the restrictions attached to other assets.

I stared at him.

“So someone wanted the cello gone because it could prove the trust existed.”

“Yes.”

Rachel whispered,

“But Dad sold it.”

“Your father was desperate for money.”

“So someone used him.”

Daniel nodded.

“That is what I believe.”

I looked at Andrew.

“You said Dad may have made mistakes from fear.”

“Yes.”

“But someone else knew how to exploit those mistakes.”

“Yes.”

Daniel handed Andrew a small envelope.

“Richard gave me this.”

“When?”

“Two months ago.”

“Why?”

“He said if anything happened to him, I should deliver it.”

Andrew opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

It contained an account number.

A date.

And one name.

Evan Mercer.

Daniel leaned back.

“Richard knew Evan was moving money without telling him.”

“Then why didn't he stop him?”

“Because by then Richard owed him.”

“How much?”

Daniel named an amount.

I felt sick.

Dad had not simply been stealing.

He had become trapped.

He had borrowed from people who expected repayment.

When he could not repay, they had gained leverage over him.

The cello became the easiest asset to convert into cash.

But that still did not explain the forged signatures.

Daniel had an answer.

“Evan had copies of the old estate documents.”

“How?”

“Your father gave them to him.”

I closed my eyes.

That was the mistake Grandpa had warned about.

The danger was not only the person taking the money.

It was the person who could make the loss look legitimate.

Evan had access to documents.

He knew the structure.

He knew the accounts.

He knew Dad was vulnerable.

And he had a reason to keep the scheme hidden.

“Where is he now?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Chicago.”

Andrew looked at me.

“The same city as the intermediary.”

“Are they connected?”

“Probably.”

Daniel stood.

“I need to leave.”

“You can't just disappear.”

“I have a family.”

“So do we.”

He stopped.

Then he looked at Lucy's photograph.

“You should protect that girl.”

“I am.”

“Then don't let Richard take the blame for everything.”

I felt anger rise.

“He still sold her cello.”

“I know.”

“He still took money.”

“I know.”

“He still broke the law.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“But?”

“But he isn't the whole story.”

Daniel left.

Andrew immediately began making calls.

Within an hour, he had enough information to establish that Evan Mercer had indeed worked with my father.

There were consulting payments.

Corporate registrations.

Travel records.

And a series of encrypted communications that the investigators could request through proper channels.

The most disturbing discovery was an invoice.

It had been paid by my father's company.

The service description read:

Document restoration and archival reconstruction.

Andrew stared at it.

“That's a strange phrase.”

“What does it mean?”

“It could mean legitimate restoration.”

“Or?”

“Recreating documents from old records.”

I felt cold.

The forged signatures.

The altered cello paperwork.

The trust transfers.

All could have been part of the same operation.

That evening, Dad finally called.

His voice was weak.

“I know you found Daniel.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he called me.”

“Where are you?”

He didn't answer.

“Dad.”

“I need you to listen.”

“I've been listening for drop.

“The trust documents?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I gave them to him.”

“You what?”

“I
