closed when we arrived.

A gray dawn hung over the road, and the rows of metal doors looked identical beneath the weak security lights.

Andrew parked beside the office.

“We have about twenty minutes before the manager arrives.”

Rachel folded her arms.

“Dad knows we're coming.”

“He left the address deliberately,” I said.

Andrew looked at me.

“Maybe.”

I held the photograph Grandpa had given me.

The date written beside the storage address was tomorrow, but Dad had left the note after discovering that Martin had spoken to us.

That meant he had either planned to return here or wanted us to believe he had.

Neither possibility made me comfortable.

When the manager arrived, Andrew showed him the authorization documents and explained that we were looking for records belonging to my family.

The man checked his computer.

“There are several units under the company name.”

“Which one was accessed recently?”

He frowned.

“Unit 214.”

“Who accessed it?”

“Mr. Richard.”

My father's name sounded strangely formal in that place.

“When?”

“Yesterday afternoon.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did he take?”

The manager shook his head.

“Nothing that I saw.”

“Did he stay long?”

“About forty minutes.”

Andrew asked whether there were cameras.

“There are cameras on the main corridor.”

He checked the recording.

Dad's car appeared at 3:17.

He entered the building carrying a black folder.

He left forty-two minutes later.

He was carrying the same folder.

Rachel looked at me.

“So whatever was inside is still there.”

The manager unlocked the unit.

The metal door rolled upward with a harsh rattling sound.

Dust hung in the air.

Inside were several cardboard boxes, an old filing cabinet, two suitcases, and a wooden trunk.

Nothing looked particularly valuable.

Then I noticed the labels.

Trust.

Estate.

Investments.

Cello.

I stepped inside.

Andrew stopped me.

“Don't touch anything until we document it.”

He photographed the unit from several angles.

Then he photographed every label.

The box marked CELLO was smaller than I expected.

Andrew opened it.

Inside were copies of the cello appraisal, dealer correspondence, and photographs.

There was also a receipt from a restoration shop.

I read the date.

It was from years before Lucy received the instrument.

Grandpa had paid for the cello to be professionally restored.

That explained something I had never understood.

The cello had always seemed almost impossibly well preserved for its age.

Grandpa had taken care of it because he intended Lucy to inherit it.

At the bottom of the box was another envelope.

This one carried Dad's handwriting.

I opened it.

Inside was a list of numbers.

Dates.

Account references.

Amounts.

And beside several entries were initials.

Andrew studied them.

“These match the transfers.”

Rachel looked pale.

“Then Dad kept records.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because people who plan to repay money often keep records.”

I looked at him.

“And people who plan to hide it?”

“They keep records too.”

We searched the next box.

It contained company documents.

Some were ordinary.

Others concerned loans.

Then Rachel found a folder with her own name.

She froze.

“Don't open it.”

Andrew looked at her.

“You should decide.”

She stared at the folder.

Finally she nodded.

I opened it for her.

The first document was a company authorization.

The second was a loan application.

The third was a transfer record.

Rachel's signature appeared on all three.

But she had never seen the documents.

Andrew examined them.

“The signatures are authentic.”

Rachel looked confused.

“I didn't sign those.”

He looked at her.

“Then someone copied your signature from a legitimate document.”

She sat on the floor.

“I don't understand.”

“Your father may have used your existing signature to authorize transactions.”

Rachel covered her face.

I knelt beside her.

“You didn't know.”

“I should have.”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“I trusted him.”

I thought of Grandma saying the same thing about Dad.

The pattern was becoming painfully clear.

Trust had been the tool.

My father had not needed everyone to participate.

He only needed them to believe him.

We opened the wooden trunk.

Inside were old family papers.

Grandpa's letters.

Tax records.

Investment statements.

And a sealed envelope addressed to Grandma.

Andrew handed it to me.

“Don't open that.”

“I won't.”

Then he noticed something beneath it.

A second envelope.

This one was addressed to me.

I stared at my name.

My hands trembled.

“Did Grandpa write this?”

Andrew checked the handwriting.

“Yes.”

I opened it.

The letter was short.

Grandpa wrote that if I was reading it, something had gone wrong.

He warned me not to assume the person who appeared guilty was responsible for everything.

He said some family members would make mistakes from fear.

Others would exploit those mistakes.

And he instructed me to protect Lucy's ownership above all else.

Then came the sentence that stopped me.

“The danger will not be the person who takes the money. It will be the person who knows how to make the loss appear legitimate.”

I read it twice.

Andrew took the letter.

He nodded slowly.

“That explains the paperwork.”

Rachel looked up.

“So Dad didn't forge everything.”

“Perhaps not.”

“Then who did?”

Nobody answered.

We continued searching.

The final box contained correspondence with Martin.

There were copies of emails.

Meeting notes.

And one document that changed everything.

It was a memorandum from Martin to Grandpa, dated shortly before Grandpa changed the estate structure.

The memorandum identified a concern involving an outside business associate.

The man's name was unfamiliar.

But the company name was not.

It was the same company that had appeared in the hidden account.

I stared at the page.

“Martin said he didn't know who helped Dad.”

“He may have been telling the truth,” Andrew said.

“Then who was this?”

He read the memorandum carefully.

“An investment intermediary.”

“What does that mean?”

“Someone who moved money between accounts.”

“Was he involved with Dad?”

“Apparently.”

Rachel looked at the document.

“Is he still alive?”

Andrew checked the address.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Chicago.”

I felt a strange sense of exhaustion.

Every answer seemed to open another door.

But then we found something else.

A recent invoice.

It was dated three days earlier.

The invoice was for document preparation.

The client name was my father's company.

The service description was vague.

Andrew's face hardened.

“Your father paid someone to prepare legal-looking documents.”

“Who?”

He turned the invoice over.

There was a handwritten phone number.

No name.

Then the storage manager knocked on the open door.

“Someone is here.”

We all turned.

A man stood at the end of the corridor.

Dark jacket.

Gray hair.

He looked directly at us.

Then at the open storage unit.

“Richard said you might come.”

Andrew stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The man did not answer immediately.

He reached into his pocket.

Rachel moved behind me.

The man pulled out a business card.

“My name is Daniel Cross.”

Andrew took it.

Daniel looked at the boxes.

“You shouldn't be here.”

I felt my pulse quicken.

“Why?”

“Because Richard wasn't hiding money here.”

He pointed toward the trunk.

“He was hiding evidence.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Daniel’s Warning Forced Us to Separate My Father’s Desperation From the Stranger Who Had Been Quietly Profiting From It

The storage facility was still closed when we arrived.
