sunrise.

She looked as though she had not slept.

Her car was parked at the end of the street, engine running.

I got in.

“What happened?”

She handed me a small brass key.

“This was taped beneath the drawer.”

I looked at it.

“Why would Dad hide a key?”

“I don't know.”

“Where is the desk?”

“In his office.”

“Does he know you took it?”

“No.”

We drove to my parents' house.

The pool excavation sat dark behind the house.

The unfinished stonework looked almost ghostly in the early light.

Rachel unlocked the side door.

We entered quietly.

My father's office was at the end of the hallway.

The desk was old, heavy, and inherited from my grandfather.

Rachel had already found the concealed compartment.

She inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Inside were several folders.

One had Lucy's name handwritten across the tab.

My hands went cold.

“Open it,” Rachel whispered.

The first document was a photocopy of the cello's original appraisal.

The second was a photograph of the instrument.

The third was a typed note.

I read it twice.

It mentioned Lucy.

It mentioned the trust.

And it mentioned a future transfer of assets.

“What is this?”

Rachel leaned over my shoulder.

“I don't know.”

There was another document underneath.

This one was older.

It was signed by Grandpa.

The wording concerned the family's instruments and certain financial assets.

Andrew had already shown us part of the arrangement.

But this document contained an additional clause.

If any designated family asset were sold without proper authorization, the responsible trustee could be removed.

I looked at Rachel.

“Dad knew.”

She nodded.

“That means he knew he could lose control of the trust.”

“Maybe.”

Rachel pointed to another page.

There were handwritten notes in my father's writing.

Dates.

Amounts.

Initials.

One line had been circled.

I read it aloud.

“Replace before audit.”

Rachel covered her mouth.

The phrase was followed by an amount.

It was close to the money missing from the trust.

“He was planning to put it back,” she whispered.

“Maybe.”

I looked at the dates.

Some of the money had been withdrawn years earlier.

The cello sale was recent.

The note was recent too.

The connection was obvious.

He may have believed that selling the cello would give him enough cash to repair the hole before anyone noticed.

Rachel sat down.

“Oh God.”

I kept searching.

There were receipts.

Investment statements.

A list of debts.

And then something unexpected.

A letter from Grandma.

It was dated several years earlier.

The letter warned Dad not to use trust funds for business obligations.

I stared at it.

“He knew.”

Rachel nodded.

“He knew.”

At the bottom of the letter was Grandma's signature.

Below it, Dad had written a response.

He promised the money would be restored.

He said the arrangement was temporary.

Grandma had apparently accepted that promise.

At least then.

Rachel began to cry.

“I helped him.”

I turned toward her.

“How?”

“I didn't know about the trust.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

She wiped her face.

“I knew he was struggling.”

“Did you ask him for money?”

“No.”

“Did he give you money?”

She hesitated.

“Sometimes.”

“From the trust?”

“I don't know.”

I stared at her.

“You need to tell Andrew everything.”

She nodded.

We left the office exactly as we had found it.

But before closing the desk, I noticed a small envelope beneath the folders.

It had no name.

Inside was a photograph.

Grandpa stood beside the cello.

Lucy was a toddler in his arms.

I turned it over.

On the back, in Grandpa's handwriting, were six words.

“For Lucy, when she is ready.”

My throat tightened.

The photograph had been kept hidden.

Why?

Rachel saw my face.

“What does it say?”

I showed her.

She began crying again.

“I didn't know Grandpa wrote that.”

“Neither did I.”

We took the photograph.

Then we called Andrew.

He asked us not to confront Dad.

He also told us not to remove anything else.

“Bring me copies,” he said. “Leave the originals where they are.”

We returned to Grandma's apartment.

She looked at the photograph for a long time.

Then she touched the handwriting.

“That was the last note he wrote before his hands became too weak.”

“What did he mean?”

Grandma smiled sadly.

“He meant the cello was meant to become hers when she understood what it represented.”

“She understands now.”

Grandma looked at me.

“Then perhaps your father has accidentally shown her exactly why.”

Andrew arrived with another folder.

He had received the preliminary results from the signature examination.

The signature on one of the disputed documents was not genuine.

The report could not yet establish who created it.

But it established something important.

The document had been altered after Grandma signed the original.

My stomach turned.

“What about the trust?”

Andrew shook his head.

“We are waiting for the bank's complete records.”

Rachel looked at him.

“I found something else.”

She handed him copies.

He read them silently.

Then he looked at me.

“This changes the scope.”

“How?”

“The note suggests your father knew the trust was underfunded.”

“Because he used it.”

“Yes.”

Rachel whispered,

“Can he go to jail?”

Andrew didn't answer immediately.

“That's not the question we should focus on yet.”

“What should we focus on?”

“Recovering the assets and establishing exactly what happened.”

That afternoon, Dad called.

He wanted to meet me alone.

I almost refused.

Then I remembered the note.

I agreed.

We met at a small diner away from the house.

He looked exhausted.

“I know you found the desk.”

My heart jumped.

“How?”

“You're not the only one who knows that office.”

“Did you know Rachel opened it?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you stop her?”

He stared out the window.

“Because I knew this was coming.”

“What?”

“The truth.”

I waited.

He finally looked at me.

“I borrowed the trust money.”

“How much?”

“I don't know.”

“You absolutely know.”

He looked down.

“Enough.”

I felt anger rise.

“Enough to what?”

“Keep the company alive.”

“For how long?”

“Years.”

The word landed heavily.

“You've been taking from the grandchildren for years.”

“I always planned to replace it.”

“You used Lucy's cello to cover the shortage.”

He closed his eyes.

“I thought I could fix everything.”

“You didn't fix anything.”

“I know.”

“Why didn't you ask Grandma?”

He laughed bitterly.

“Because she would have said no.”

“So you took it anyway.”

He looked at me.

“I made a terrible decision.”

“That doesn't explain the forged documents.”

His expression changed.

“I didn't forge anything.”

“Then who did?”

“I don't know.”

“Do you know who altered the cello paperwork?”

“No.”

“Do you know where the missing trust money went?”

He was silent.

That silence was different.

It felt like fear.

“Dad.”

He looked at me.

“There is something you need to understand.”

“What?”

“The money wasn't all spent.”

“What does that mean?”

He leaned forward.

“Some of it was moved.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“Who moved it?”

He shook his head.

“I thought it was being held for me.”

“By whom?”

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

He stood.

“I have to go.”

“Dad—”

He left the diner.

I watched him cross the parking lot.

Then my own phone vibrated.

It was a message from Andrew.

The bank had located another account.

It was not in Dad's name.

It was not in Mom's.

It was not in Rachel's.

The account belonged to a company that had no obvious connection to our family.

But the first deposit into it had come directly from the grandchildren's trust.

And the date was nearly eight years old.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Hidden Account Was Older
