18 – The Photograph Showed a Child None of Us Recognized, and the Search Led Back to the One Family We Had Never Suspected

The photograph changed the entire investigation.

For months we had believed there were six children.

Now there was evidence of a seventh.

The baby in the photograph had been wearing Clara's number, but it was not Clara.

The detective sent the image to the hospital archives.

The bracelet number had been altered.

The original number underneath was faint.

507.

No child with that number appeared in the official registry.

“Who was Baby 507?” I asked.

“We don't know yet.”

Thomas number did not appear in the names section.

It appeared in the margins.

507.

Always followed by a small circle.

My mother had used circles to mark children she believed were still alive.

“Then she knew.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't she tell me?”

“She may have been afraid she was wrong.”

I looked at him.

“Again.”

He nodded.

The detective traced the photograph.

It had been developed at a pharmacy that still kept archived order slips.

The customer name was Margaret Hale.

My mother.

The photograph had been printed three days after my delivery.

She had kept it for decades.

But why?

The detective found another image.

My mother standing beside the same woman.

This time the woman was older.

The photograph had been taken ten years later.

The woman was holding a teenage girl.

The girl's face was turned away.

On the back, my mother had written:

She knows.

We searched the woman's identity.

Her name was Susan Vale.

Samuel Vale's sister.

My heart tightened.

“Samuel.”

The man whose estate had been used in Arthur's scheme.

The man whose death had been ruled an accident until the evidence proved otherwise.

His sister had been involved somehow.

The detective located Susan.

She was ninety-one.

She lived in a nursing facility in Virginia.

We visited her that afternoon.

When she saw the photograph, she began to cry.

“You found her.”

“Who?”

“The girl.”

“Who is she?”

Susan looked at me.

“Your one child belonged to me.

He had arranged for that child to be protected.

“Where?”

“In a private school.”

I frowned.

“A many?”

“All of them.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother told her.”

I looked down.

My mother had known.

She had known Anna existed.

She had watched her grow.

She had protected her.

And she had never told me.

I was angry.

Then I remembered her letter.

She had believed truth could get me killed.

That did not excuse everything.

But it explained the fear.

Anna looked at me.

“Do you hate her?”

I shook my natural.

Perhaps because we had both spent years wondering whether the other existed.

The detective asked Anna whether she knew the location of the Black Book's missing pages.

She shook her head.

“No.”

“What about Baby 507's original records?”

“My mother had home.

The music box was still there.

Inside was a tiny compartment.

The detective opened it.

A folded document fell out.

Baby “My father.”

My daughter was the biological child of Samuel Vale.

The man Arthur had murdered.

That explained everything.

Arthur had not simply wanted Samuel's money.

He wanted his heir.

Anna was the legitimate heir to Samuel's estate.

Daniel had been created as a false substitute.

Arthur had used Daniel's identity to claim the estate.

The millions had never belonged to Daniel.

They belonged to Anna.

My daughter.

The detective reviewed Samuel's original will.

Anna was named sole heir.

Arthur's forged amendment had erased her.

The trust money belonged to her.

The entire financial scheme had been built to prevent her from being found.

I looked at Anna.

“You lost your father before you ever knew him.”

“Yes.”

“And I lost you.”

“Yes.”

“And Arthur stole both of those lives.”

“Yes.”

She reached across the table.

“But he didn't get the last word.”

For the first time, I believed her.

Then Thomas walked into the room holding another document.

His face had gone pale.

“What?”

He handed it to me.

It was a death certificate.

Anna Reed.

The date was six months earlier.

I looked at Anna.

She was sitting beside me.

Alive.

The certificate was fraudulent.

But the signature belonged to a doctor who was still practicing.

The detective took it.

“Someone is trying to kill her on paper.”

Anna looked frightened.

“Why?”

“Because legally,” the detective said, “a dead heir cannot claim an estate.”

I looked at Thomas.

“Arthur.”

He shook his head.

“Maybe.”

The detective checked the filing me.

“The grave.”

We drove to the cemetery.

The detective searched beneath the headstone.

A metal box was buried in the soil.

Inside was one final
