Arthur controlled the paperwork. Between them, they could move an infant from one record to another before the birth was officially registered.”

I looked at the six files scattered across the floor.

“Daniel. Julia. Rebecca. Michael. Clara. difference between one crime and six.

Michael had been removed first.

Daniel had been inserted into my family.

Julia had been transferred through a false death record.

Rebecca had been given a fabricated medical identity.

Jonathan had been moved under my maiden name.

Clara had been hidden inside Arthur's own extended do?”

Vanessa looked at the old nursery.

“He took a photograph.”

“Of what?”

“The babies.”

She pulled another picture from planning to erase the records.”

The detective took the photograph.

“Do you have the original?”

“No.”

“Who does?”

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

“I gave it to someone.”

“Who?”

She hesitated.

“My mother.”

The detective's expression changed.

“Where is she?”

“Dead.”

“Then where is the photograph?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Thomas stepped toward her.

“You knew this all along.”

“I knew pieces.”

“You helped Arthur.”

“I was trying to protect Daniel.”

“You tried to take Margaret's house.”

“I thought that was the only way.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“You thought stealing my home was protection?”

“I thought if Daniel had the money, Arthur would leave him alone.”

“You knew about the trusts.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the children.”

“I knew there had been children.”

“And you still married my son.”

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I loved Daniel.”

“Then why did you lie to him?”

She looked down.

“Because Arthur told me if I told Daniel the truth, he would die.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You should have trusted me.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“I know.”

“You watched me destroy my own life.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe Mom was the enemy.”

“I know.”

Daniel's voice became quiet.

“That is the part I can't forgive.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I don't expect you to.”

The detective asked her about Robert.

Vanessa explained that Robert had kept a private journal.

After his death, Arthur searched for it.

He found only half.

The other half disappeared.

My mother had taken it.

I stared at Thomas.

“You knew.”

“I knew she had something.”

“Where is it?”

“I don't know.”

Vanessa gave a bitter smile.

“Neither did Arthur.”

The detective searched the abandoned hospital.

Behind a loose brick in the old physician's office, she found a metal box.

Inside was Robert's journal.

The first pages described routine medical cases.

Then the entries changed.

He wrote about Arthur.

About the trusts.

About the children.

About my mother.

And about me.

The entry dated the night of my delivery was short.

Margaret Hale arrived at 1:47 a.m. Complication during delivery. Female infant born alive at 3:12. Arthur insists the infant must disappear. I refused.

I stopped breathing.

Thomas read over my shoulder.

The next line had been scratched out.

Under it, Robert had written:

Arthur says the Collins boy will replace her.

Daniel.

I turned the page.

Robert described my mother arriving at the nursery.

She demanded her child.

Arthur threatened her.

Robert tried to intervene.

Then came the line that changed everything.

I told Margaret the truth. She did not believe me because Arthur had already prepared the death record.

My mother had known.

But she had not known whether Robert was telling the truth.

The next entry was written three hours later.

The infant girl has been removed.

Robert had written the name of the person who took her.

Eleanor Hale.

I looked at the detective.

“Eleanor.”

“Yes.”

“But you said my mother gave her to Eleanor.”

Thomas nodded.

“That was what happened.”

Robert had handed the baby to my mother.

My mother had taken the baby away from the hospital.

Then, because Arthur was searching for her, she placed the infant with Eleanor temporarily.

Eleanor later gave the child to Helen Mercer.

That child became Julia.

I looked at Julia.

She was crying silently.

“My whole life,” she whispered.

I took her hand.

“I know.”

The journal continued.

Robert wrote that he regretted his role.

He had believed Arthur would stop after one child.

He was wrong.

The following year, another infant was moved.

Then another.

He began documenting each one.

Six children.

Six identities.

One network.

But the final pages were missing.

The detective searched the room again.

Under a broken cabinet, she found a narrow envelope.

It contained a dental X-ray.

Thomas recognized it immediately.

“That was what I was warned about.”

“The dental records.”

“Yes.”

The detective compared the X-ray to the records from the body buried as Thomas.

The match confirmed the body was Edward.

That part of the story was finally settled.

The man who had once called himself Edward was Thomas.

The real Edward was dead.

Ethan had been another brother.

The identities had been exchanged so many times that names had become nearly meaningless.

But DNA and dental records had refused to cooperate with the lies.

The detective closed the file.

“There's something else.”

She held up Robert's final note.

It was addressed to my mother.

Margaret knows nothing.

If I die, tell her this:

The child you lost was not the only child they took.

My mother had underlined the final sentence.

I looked at Thomas.

“That's why she found the others.”

“Yes.”

“She spent her life trying to recover them.”

“Yes.”

I sat on the old hospital floor.

For the first time, I understood my mother's silence differently.

She had not simply hidden a terrible secret.

She had been carrying a map.

A map to six lives.

And every road on that map led back to Arthur.

The detective found one final notation in the journal.

Robert had written that Arthur maintained a private ledger outside the trust records.

He called it the Black Book.

The book contained every name.

Every payment.

Every transfer.

Every person who had helped.

“Where is it?”

Thomas answered.

“Arthur told me it was destroyed.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“He lied.”

“Where is it?”

Vanessa looked at the six files.

“Your mother had it.”

I stared.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before she died.”

“Where did she put it?”

Vanessa's expression changed.

“I don't know.”

The detective asked, “Then why are you certain she had it?”

“Because Arthur spent the last year of her life searching for it.”

I thought about my mother's house.

Her locked bedroom.

The sewing room nobody was allowed to enter.

The old cedar chest.

The place where she kept photographs.

The detective called for another search team.

We returned to my mother's house the next day.

Every drawer was opened.

Every box examined.

Nothing.

Then Julia noticed something.

A photograph on the wall.

My mother standing beside me when I was twenty.

Behind us was a bookshelf.

She pointed.

“That book.”

I looked.

It was an old family Bible.

My mother had owned it for fifty years.

Inside the cover was a handwritten inscription.

For Margaret.

I opened it.

A thin black book had been hidden behind the binding.

The Black Book.

The detective carefully removed it.

Every page contained names.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

Bankers.

Adoption agents.

Notaries.

Judges.

Politicians.

Some names had been crossed out.

Others marked with circles.

Then I saw Daniel's name.

Beside it was one word.

PROTECTED.

Julia.

PROTECTED.

Rebecca.

PROTECTED.

Jonathan.

PROTECTED.

Michael.

PROTECTED.

Clara.

PROTECTED.

I looked at Thomas.

“My mother wasn't collecting victims.”

“No.”

“She was collecting evidence.”

“Yes.”

The final page was different.

Only one name appeared.

Margaret Collins.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

If she ever finds this, tell her the truth.

I turned the page.

Nothing.

The book ended there.

But tucked into the back cover was a small photograph.

It showed my mother, Robert Bennett and a woman I had never seen before.

On the back was a date.

The day before I gave birth.

The detective enlarged the image.

The unknown woman was holding a newborn.

The baby had a hospital bracelet.

Number 442.

Clara.

I looked at Clara.

She stared at the photograph.

“That woman,” she whispered.

“What?”

“I know her.”

“Who is she?”

Clara's face went pale.

“She raised me.”

The room fell silent.

Her adoptive mother.

The woman who had supposedly known nothing.

She had been photographed with Robert the day before my delivery.

The detective looked at the date.

“This photograph was taken before Clara was born.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

The detective examined the infant again.

“That's impossible.”

Thomas took the photograph.

He stared at it.

Then his expression changed.

“That isn't Clara.”

I looked at him.

“Who is it?”

He turned the photograph over.

There was another handwritten note.

Baby 442 is not the child Arthur thinks she is.

I looked at Clara.

Then at Thomas.

“Then who is that baby?”

Thomas whispered,

“That's the child we've been missing.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The Photograph Showed a Child None of Us Recognized, and the Search Led
