16 – Evelyn Finally Appeared Under a False Name, but Her First Conversation With Me Revealed Why Arthur Had Trusted Her Long After She Betrayed Him

Evelyn was sitting beside a window when I entered.

She looked smaller than I expected.

Her hair was almost completely white.

A blanket covered her knees.

For a moment, I couldn't connect the woman in front of me with the voice on Arthur's recording.

Then she smiled.

“You have his eyes.”

I remained standing.

“You killed Helen.”

She didn't deny it.

“I caused her death.”

“You killed Arthur.”

“No.”

“Gerald did.”

“Yes.”

“On your orders.”

She looked toward the window.

“Not exactly.”

Ruiz had warned me not to let her manipulate me.

I sat anyway.

“Tell me the truth.”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“You sound like your father.”

“He wasn't my father.”

“I know.”

The answer startled me.

She knew about my biological father.

Arthur had told her.

She explained that Arthur never considered blood the measure of family.

“He loved you because you stayed.”

I asked why she hated him.

“I didn't.”

“Then why destroy him?”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Losing everything.”

Evelyn had grown up watching Arthur build his business.

She believed she had helped create it.

When Arthur began separating his assets, she thought he was abandoning her.

She started taking money.

At first, small amounts.

Then larger ones.

Gerald helped hide the transfers.

Mercer helped manipulate medical records.

Helen discovered the scheme.

Evelyn intended to drug Arthur temporarily so he could be declared incompetent.

She prepared the medication.

Helen drank it.

Evelyn panicked.

She asked Mercer to make the death look natural.

He agreed.

That was the beginning of the cover-up.

Arthur knew.

He stayed silent.

“Why?”

“Because I was his sister.”

I looked at her.

“You let him believe Helen died naturally.”

“I let everyone believe it.”

“And then you did it again with Arthur.”

She shook her head.

“I didn't plan his death.”

“You brought the medication.”

“Yes.”

“You ordered Gerald to use it.”

“I told him to stop Arthur.”

“Gerald injected him.”

“Yes.”

“And you left him there.”

She closed her eyes.

“I thought he would survive.”

The lie sounded weak.

She had known the medication could kill.

But she hadn't expected Gerald to use the full dose.

I asked why she wanted the trust documents.

“Because I thought Arthur had left me nothing.”

“He hadn't.”

“I know that now.”

Arthur had created a small trust for Evelyn.

Enough to live comfortably.

But she wanted control of everything.

She had spent years believing he was punishing her.

In reality, he had been protecting her.

That was the cruelty of it.

Arthur had kept secrets to protect people who didn't deserve protection.

And those people had used his silence against him.

I asked about Catherine.

Evelyn admitted she had found her years earlier.

Catherine was alive.

She had been living under another name.

Evelyn had used her as leverage against Arthur.

Catherine knew about the old marriage.

She threatened to expose Evelyn's financial crimes.

Evelyn paid her to remain silent.

“Where is she?”

Evelyn gave Ruiz the location.

Catherine was living in another state.

Alive.

Safe.

She had been afraid to contact Arthur.

Not because she hated him.

Because she believed Evelyn would hurt anyone connected to him.

That explained why Arthur had never found her publicly.

He had been protecting her too.

I asked Evelyn about Brenda.

“She was useful.”

“You lied to her.”

“Yes.”

“You made her believe Arthur killed Helen.”

“She needed someone to blame.”

“Why?”

“Because she was angry.”

Evelyn said anger made Brenda easy to control.

Mark was different.

He wanted money.

Gerald wanted money.

Mercer wanted money.

Kevin wanted recognition.

Each person had a weakness.

Evelyn simply used it.

Then I asked the question that had been bothering me since Part 12.

“What about Claire?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Claire was the only one I couldn't control.”

That explained everything.

Claire had discovered the truth.

She had protected Arthur.

She had protected me.

She had refused money.

She had stayed silent because she believed Arthur was still in danger.

Evelyn admitted she had tried to frighten Claire.

She sent anonymous messages.

She followed her.

She even arranged the rejected payment through Mark's account.

Claire had never taken the money.

She had never betrayed Arthur.

Evelyn said that was why Mark became suspicious.

He couldn't understand why Claire refused wealth.

He assumed she was hiding something.

I asked about Samuel.

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“Arthur's greatest mistake.”

“Why?”

“He believed blood could heal old wounds.”

“But Samuel was innocent.”

“So was Helen.”

The words came quietly.

Then Evelyn looked at me.

“Do you know why Arthur changed the trust?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

She leaned forward.

“He changed it because he knew I would target Samuel.”

That revelation stunned me.

Arthur had anticipated her.

He had structured the estate so Samuel could not be isolated.

Nora received equal protection.

I controlled the house temporarily.

The trust required the investigation to finish before distribution.

Everyone had been forced into the same legal structure.

No one could quietly take everything.

Arthur had built the estate like a lock.

Evelyn had spent years trying to find the key.

I asked whether Arthur knew she was coming the night he died.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he call the police?”

“He wanted me to confess.”

The recorder.

Arthur had deliberately allowed the conversation to happen.

He knew Hale would receive the recording.

But he had underestimated Gerald.

Gerald arrived unexpectedly.

The confrontation became violent.

Arthur was injected.

The thermos was later contaminated by Kevin.

Mark arrived looking for documents.

Brenda arrived looking for proof.

Everyone believed someone else had killed him.

That confusion had protected Evelyn.

Until the recorder was found.

Evelyn looked at me.

“You have everything now.”

“Not everything.”

“What else?”

“Why did Arthur trust me?”

She smiled.

“Because when he gave you a chance to hate him, you didn't.”

I thought of every argument.

Every accusation.

Every year I believed he had been selfish.

Evelyn said Arthur knew I would eventually discover the truth.

He had counted on me to protect the family after he was gone.

Not by forgiving everyone.

By refusing to become like them.

I stood.

Ruiz entered.

Evelyn was formally arrested.

As officers led her away, she stopped beside me.

“One thing.”

I turned.

“Arthur wasn't afraid of dying.”

“What was he afraid of?”

“That you would spend the rest of your life believing he didn't love you.”

The door closed behind her.

I stood alone.

Sarah came in carrying another envelope.

“This was found in the safe.”

My name was written on it.

Arthur's handwriting.

I opened it.

There were only two pages.

The first explained the trust.

The second contained a final instruction.

Find Catherine.

Tell her I was sorry.

Then, beneath it:

And when you find her, ask her what really happened the night I left her.

I looked at Sarah.

“Arthur still wasn't telling us everything.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Outside, dawn was beginning.

For the first time since Arthur died, the house felt quiet.

Not peaceful.

Just quiet.

The truth about Helen had been exposed.

Evelyn had been found.

Gerald and Mercer were facing charges.

Mark had admitted his crimes.

Kevin had confessed his part in the false evidence.

Brenda had finally learned that her hatred had been built on a lie.

But Catherine remained.

And Arthur's final question suggested that even the story of his first marriage had another secret waiting at the end of it.

I folded the letter.

“We're going to find her.”

Sarah nodded.

This time, there would be no more secrets left behind.

At least, that was what I believed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: We Found Catherine Alive After Thirty-Four Years, but Her First Words About
