disappeared thirty-four years before Arthur's death.

There was almost nothing in the public record.

No obituary.

No confirmed death.

No property transfer.

No divorce.

Ruiz found the marriage certificate.

Arthur had married Catherine when he was thirty-one.

They stayed together for nine years.

Then she vanished.

Helen entered his life three years later.

That meant Arthur had never legally divorced Catherine.

I looked at Sarah.

“How did he marry Helen?”

“That's the question.”

Ruiz found an old court filing.

Catherine had been declared missing.

Arthur had petitioned for the declaration.

The judge approved it.

Helen's marriage was legal.

But only because Catherine was presumed dead.

Brenda looked stunned.

“Dad never told us.”

“Maybe he couldn't.”

Ruiz asked Mark whether he knew.

He shook his head.

“I found out six months ago.”

“How?”

“Arthur's investigator.”

The same investigator who had traced the financial thefts.

Mark had followed him.

He discovered Catherine's name.

Then he began digging.

“What did you find?”

“Nothing.”

Mark paused.

“Until I found a letter.”

“From Catherine?”

“No.”

“Who?”

Arthur.

The letter was written shortly before Helen died.

It said Catherine was alive.

She had contacted Arthur.

She wanted money.

She wanted him to acknowledge that he had abandoned her.

Arthur refused to pay.

Not because he didn't care.

Because he believed Catherine was being controlled by someone.

Who?

Evelyn.

Arthur's sister.

Evelyn had been involved in his business from the beginning.

She knew about Catherine.

She knew about Helen.

She knew about every financial account.

She also knew Arthur intended to expose Gerald and Mercer.

I asked where Evelyn was now.

Mark said dead.

But Ruiz wasn't convinced.

She checked.

Evelyn's death certificate had been signed by Mercer.

The same doctor connected to Helen's death.

That was not a coincidence.

Ruiz ordered the records.

Evelyn had supposedly died of heart failure.

But there was no autopsy.

No hospital record.

Only Mercer's statement.

Brenda whispered, “She was never dead.”

Mark looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because I spoke to her.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

Brenda explained that Evelyn contacted her after Arthur threatened to change his will.

She told Brenda the family would be destroyed if Arthur exposed the old secrets.

Brenda believed her.

She didn't realize Evelyn was manipulating her.

Evelyn told Brenda that Arthur had killed Helen.

She convinced Brenda to steal records.

That was why Brenda had spent years angry at Arthur.

She had been given a false story.

The betrayal had been carefully constructed.

Ruiz asked where Evelyn was now.

Brenda didn't know.

But she knew one person who might.

Rachel.

Rachel was found that afternoon.

She was living under her married name.

She didn't run.

She simply said, “Arthur finally died.”

I asked whether she knew who killed him.

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

“Who?”

She looked at Ruiz.

“Evelyn.”

“But Evelyn is dead.”

Rachel shook her head.

“No.”

“Where is she?”

Rachel looked at me.

“She was with Arthur the night he died.”

I felt cold.

“How?”

“She came to the house.”

“Why?”

“She wanted the trust documents.”

“Did she kill him?”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Rachel looked toward the table.

“Gerald.”

Ruiz frowned.

“Gerald poisoned him?”

“Not intentionally.”

The story became stranger.

Rachel said Gerald had been working for Evelyn for years.

He stole money.

He forged documents.

He pressured Arthur.

But on the night Arthur died, Gerald was supposed to frighten him into signing.

Evelyn brought the medication.

Mercer prepared it.

Arthur refused.

Then Evelyn became angry.

She accused Arthur of destroying the family.

Gerald grabbed the medication.

During the struggle, the vial broke.

Arthur was cut.

Gerald panicked.

He picked up another vial.

Rachel said she saw him inject Arthur.

“Why?”

“To stop him.”

“Stop him from what?”

“Calling the police.”

Arthur had already reached for his phone.

Gerald injected him.

He thought the dose would make Arthur unconscious.

He didn't know how much was in the syringe.

Arthur collapsed.

Evelyn ordered Gerald to leave.

But before he did, Arthur spoke.

He said one name.

“David.”

My name.

He wanted Gerald to know that everything would be exposed.

Rachel said she followed Gerald.

She later saw Kevin.

Then Mark.

Then Brenda.

Everyone arrived for different reasons.

No one knew the whole truth.

The night had become a chain of frightened people making terrible choices.

But there was still one question.

Who had planned the injection?

Rachel said Evelyn.

Then she handed Ruiz a photograph.

It showed Evelyn standing beside Arthur.

The date was the day before his death.

She was alive.

She had been using another identity.

Her name was Elaine Porter.

The same name appeared on the company receiving payments from Gerald.

The same company Mark believed belonged to him.

It didn't.

Evelyn controlled it.

Mark had unknowingly been used as its public owner.

That explained the money.

It explained Gerald.

It explained the forged medical records.

It explained why Arthur had built the trust.

He knew his sister had access to everything.

But he couldn't expose her without proving the connection.

Rachel said Arthur finally had proof.

He had arranged to meet a federal investigator.

The meeting was scheduled for the morning after his death.

I looked at Ruiz.

“Can we find the investigator?”

“Yes.”

“Then let's do it.”

We found him that evening.

His name was Thomas Hale.

He had been working with Arthur for fourteen months.

He confirmed everything.

Arthur had been preparing a complete financial file.

He had evidence connecting Evelyn to Gerald and Mercer.

But he had not yet found the final proof.

“What proof?”

Hale looked at me.

“A recording.”

“Where?”

“Arthur said he hid it somewhere no one would search.”

“Where?”

Hale handed me a note.

It contained three words.

UNDER HER PORTRAIT.

I knew immediately.

Arthur's house contained one portrait he never allowed anyone to move.

Helen.

We returned.

The portrait hung above the fireplace.

Ruiz removed it.

Behind it was a narrow compartment.

Inside was a small recorder.

The battery was nearly dead.

Hale pressed play.

Arthur's voice filled the room.

“If you're hearing this, I failed to stop her.”

A second voice answered.

Female.

Old.

Calm.

Evelyn.

“You always were sentimental.”

I stopped breathing.

Arthur asked why she had killed Helen.

Evelyn laughed softly.

“I didn't mean to kill her.”

The recording continued.

She admitted she had intended to drug Arthur.

She wanted control of his accounts.

Helen accidentally drank the medicine.

Arthur discovered the truth.

Evelyn threatened him.

He kept silent.

For years.

Until Samuel appeared.

Then Arthur decided to expose her.

The recording ended abruptly.

But one final sound remained.

A door closing.

Then Arthur said:

“David will finish what I couldn't.”

I looked at the recorder.

The phrase wasn't a command.

It was a warning.

And then Ruiz's phone rang.

They had located Evelyn.

She was in a private care facility.

Using another name.

And she had requested to speak with me.

Alone.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Evelyn Finally Appeared Under a False Name, but Her First
