14 – The Blue Folder Changed the Meaning of Helen’s Death, and Arthur’s Final Notes Pointed Toward Someone He Had Spent Years Protecting

We returned to the house before sunrise.

Sarah had placed the blue folder on the dining table.

Nobody touched it.

It felt less like evidence than a wound.

Ruiz photographed every page before allowing us to read them.

The first documents showed Helen's medications.

The doses had been changed three times in the month before her death.

The alterations had been authorized by Mercer.

But the handwriting wasn't his.

Someone had copied his signature.

The next page contained Arthur's notes.

He had compared the prescription records with pharmacy records.

The numbers didn't match.

Someone had been collecting medication that Helen never received.

The missing medicine had been diverted.

Arthur believed it was being used to control people.

Then came the financial records.

Payments had gone to Gerald.

Some went to Mercer.

Others went to an account belonging to a company registered under a different name.

Ruiz recognized it.

“It belongs to Mark.”

Mark denied it.

“It was my company.”

“Your name is on the filing.”

“I didn't control the account.”

“Who did?”

He looked at Brenda.

She shook her head.

“Don't look at me.”

Mark's silence told us enough.

Ruiz demanded access to the account.

Mark finally gave it.

The transactions showed something strange.

Money entered from Gerald.

Then immediately left.

Most of it went to people we didn't know.

One payment went to Elena.

Another went to a nursing facility.

Brenda stared at that line.

“Why would Mark pay a nursing facility?”

Ruiz checked the name.

It was where Helen's former nurse had lived.

She was still alive.

That nurse had treated Helen the night she died.

We found her that morning.

Her name was Margaret Bell.

She was eighty-two.

She listened quietly as Ruiz explained why we had come.

When she heard Helen's name, she began to cry.

“I knew this day would come.”

Margaret told us Helen had been frightened.

She had complained that someone was changing her medication.

Arthur wanted to call police.

Helen refused.

“She said if the police came, they'd kill him too.”

“Who?”

“She wouldn't say.”

Margaret remembered one detail.

The night Helen died, a woman visited the house.

Not Brenda.

Not Claire.

Someone older.

Someone Helen knew well.

Margaret couldn't identify her.

But she remembered the perfume.

Lavender.

Claire suddenly looked up.

Arthur's sister had worn lavender perfume.

Her name was Evelyn.

She had died years earlier.

So that clue went nowhere.

Or seemed to.

Margaret then said the woman wasn't Helen's relative.

She was a friend.

Someone Arthur trusted.

Ruiz asked whether she remembered anything else.

“She brought a small bag.”

“What was inside?”

“Medicine.”

That changed everything.

The medicine that killed Helen may not have come from Mercer.

It may have been brought by someone pretending to help.

Margaret remembered hearing Helen argue.

Then a glass breaking.

Then Arthur shouting.

When Margaret entered the room, Helen was already unconscious.

The woman was gone.

Arthur told Margaret to call emergency services.

But before they arrived, he said something strange.

“Don't let them take the bottle.”

Margaret didn't understand.

Arthur had hidden it.

Later, the bottle disappeared.

Ruiz asked whether Arthur ever found it.

Margaret said yes.

Years later.

He showed it to her.

The label had been changed.

Inside was not the medicine Helen had been prescribed.

It contained a different drug.

Arthur believed that bottle proved murder.

But it was gone.

I asked who could have taken it.

Margaret looked at me.

“Your father.”

Arthur had taken it to keep it safe.

Then someone stole it from him.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Back at the house, Mark asked to speak privately.

Ruiz allowed it with an officer present.

He admitted he had been investigating Helen's death.

He had believed Arthur was responsible.

Not because he thought Arthur wanted her dead.

Because he believed Arthur had covered it up.

Mark said that after Helen died, Arthur became secretive.

He moved money.

He purchased properties.

He created trusts.

Mark thought Arthur was hiding evidence.

So Mark began stealing from him.

He justified it by telling himself he was taking back what should have belonged to the family.

Then he discovered the truth.

Arthur wasn't hiding his guilt.

He was hiding someone else's.

“Who?”

Mark looked at me.

“Claire.”

The room went silent.

Claire stood near the window.

She didn't move.

Mark explained.

Claire had discovered something about Helen years before she married me.

She had found an old medical record.

She took it to Arthur.

Arthur begged her not to tell me.

Claire agreed.

Not because she was guilty.

Because Arthur believed the person responsible was still watching.

I looked at Claire.

“You knew?”

She nodded.

“About Helen?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Twenty years.”

I couldn't speak.

She came closer.

“I knew she hadn't died naturally.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Arthur told me the truth would put you in danger.”

I asked whether she knew who had done it.

“No.”

Mark laughed bitterly.

“She knows.”

Claire turned toward him.

“No.”

“You met her.”

“Who?”

Mark said the name.

“Evelyn.”

Claire's face changed.

“That can't be.”

Mark explained that Evelyn had not died when the family believed she had.

She had been living under another name.

Arthur had secretly supported her.

Claire had met her once.

But the woman Claire met wasn't Evelyn.

It was her daughter.

Mark had mistaken her identity.

The entire family had been chasing the wrong person.

Ruiz asked who Evelyn's daughter was.

Mark didn't answer.

Brenda did.

“Her name was Rachel.”

Sarah froze.

I knew the name.

Rachel had worked for Arthur years earlier.

She had left after an argument.

She had also been the person who recommended Mercer.

We searched the old records.

Rachel's employment file showed something important.

She had been hired six months before Helen's death.

She left three weeks afterward.

Her references came from Evelyn.

But Evelyn's signature appeared nowhere.

Someone else had signed.

Arthur.

Why would Arthur hire the daughter of the woman who might have killed Helen?

Unless he knew Rachel was innocent.

Unless he had hired her to watch her mother.

Ruiz looked at the folder.

The last document was a letter from Arthur.

It was addressed to me.

The letter said he had spent years trying to separate truth from fear.

He had failed.

But he knew one thing.

The person responsible for Helen's death had never intended to kill her.

The target had been Arthur.

Helen had taken the wrong medication by mistake.

The person who brought it had been trying to drug Arthur.

Helen drank from the wrong glass.

The murder had been an accident.

But someone had covered it up afterward.

That someone had been protecting the person who made the mistake.

Ruiz asked why Arthur had hidden that.

The answer was in the final sentence.

Because the person who covered it up was the only person left who knew where my first wife is buried.

I stared at the page.

“First wife?”

Claire whispered, “Helen wasn't his first wife.”

No one had ever mentioned another marriage.

Ruiz immediately called for the records.

Arthur had been married once before Helen.

Her name was Catherine.

She had disappeared.

No death certificate.

No grave.

No divorce.

The case had just become something much larger.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: Arthur Had Been
