Helen.”

“That doesn't make you a detective.”

“It makes me part of this.”

Ruiz held my gaze for a moment before stepping aside.

“Then do exactly what I tell you.”

We drove through the darkness toward Arthur's old house.

The place looked different at night.

The windows were black.

The porch light was on.

That was the first thing that bothered me.

Arthur had never left that light on.

Ruiz stopped two houses away.

Two patrol cars were already parked without their headlights.

Officers surrounded the back.

“Who is with Brenda?” I asked.

“We don't know yet.”

A voice came through the radio.

Movement inside.

Then another officer reported that the front door was locked.

Ruiz raised a hand.

Nobody moved.

A minute later, the front door opened.

Brenda stepped onto the porch.

She looked older than I remembered.

Her hair was loose.

Her face was wet with tears.

Behind her stood a man.

I couldn't see him clearly.

Then he stepped forward.

Mark.

I felt my stomach drop.

Ruiz ordered them to put their hands where she could see them.

Mark obeyed.

Brenda did not.

“Brenda,” Ruiz called, “step away from him.”

Brenda looked back.

Mark whispered something.

She finally raised her hands.

Officers moved in.

Mark was already under arrest, so they separated him immediately.

Brenda looked at me.

“I didn't kill Arthur.”

I didn't answer.

“I swear.”

“Then why were you here?”

She looked toward the house.

“Because I had to find something before they did.”

“Who?”

She shook her head.

“Not here.”

Ruiz searched her.

Nothing.

Mark was searched too.

Nothing except a key.

Ruiz held it up.

“What does this open?”

Mark said nothing.

Brenda answered.

“Arthur's desk.”

Ruiz looked at me.

Arthur's desk had been removed from the house after his death.

We had stored it in the garage.

The key couldn't belong to that.

Brenda shook her head.

“There was a second drawer.”

“What second drawer?”

“In the bedroom.”

I remembered the desk.

The old oak one.

Arthur had always kept it locked.

I had never found the key.

Ruiz asked Brenda why she knew about it.

“Because Helen showed me.”

The name stopped everything.

“You knew Helen?”

Brenda looked at me.

“She was my mother.”

I stared.

“You're saying Helen wasn't just Arthur's wife?”

“She was my mother.”

I knew that already.

What I didn't know was why she had hidden the relationship.

Brenda explained that she was born before Arthur met Helen.

Arthur later became her stepfather.

But he had treated her like his own daughter.

After Helen died, Brenda blamed him.

She believed Arthur had ignored warning signs.

She believed he had let Helen suffer.

Then, years later, she discovered the truth.

Helen had not died naturally.

Her medication had been altered.

The official explanation was an accidental overdose.

Arthur had never believed it.

Neither had Brenda.

“Who altered it?” I asked.

She looked at Mark.

“That's what he wanted me to find out.”

Mark finally spoke.

“That's not what happened.”

Brenda turned on him.

“You lied to me.”

“I protected you.”

“You used me.”

Mark looked away.

Ruiz ordered him to remain silent.

Brenda began crying again.

She said Helen had discovered that money was disappearing from Arthur's accounts.

She confronted someone.

After that, she became afraid.

She told Brenda she believed someone close to Arthur was stealing from him.

Arthur investigated.

The thefts led to Gerald.

But Gerald wasn't working alone.

There was a medical connection.

Mercer had been providing prescriptions.

Someone altered dosages.

The scheme had been running quietly for years.

Helen found out.

Then she died.

Arthur suspected murder.

But he never had enough evidence.

So he kept investigating.

He created trusts.

He moved property.

He recorded conversations.

He protected the people he believed could become targets.

And he waited.

“For twenty years?” I asked.

Brenda nodded.

“He knew whoever killed Helen would eventually come after him.”

“What changed?”

“Samuel.”

She looked toward the floor.

“Arthur decided the secrets had gone on long enough.”

Mark interrupted.

“That isn't why he died.”

Brenda stared at him.

“Then tell him.”

Mark remained silent.

Ruiz asked Brenda about the night Arthur died.

She said she went to the house after receiving a message.

Who sent it?

She didn't know.

The message said Arthur had left something for her.

She arrived after ten.

The house was empty.

She searched the bedroom.

That's when she found the hidden drawer.

It contained old medical records.

Helen's records.

Arthur's notes.

And a photograph.

Brenda had taken the records.

Then Mark arrived.

He said he was looking for the same thing.

They argued.

He told her Arthur had discovered who killed Helen.

“Did he?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Brenda looked at me.

“I don't know.”

That answer sounded impossible.

“You just said he discovered it.”

“He wrote the name down.”

“Where?”

“In a letter.”

“What letter?”

“The one he left for you.”

I remembered Arthur's envelope.

The letter I had not opened until after his death.

The words had seemed strange.

They were not an ordinary goodbye.

They had been instructions.

Protect Samuel.

Trust Sarah.

Do not believe the first story.

At the time, I thought he was warning me about the inheritance.

Now I understood.

The letter was a map.

Ruiz asked Brenda where the name was.

“In the hidden drawer.”

We returned inside.

The bedroom smelled faintly of old wood and dust.

Ruiz opened the drawer.

It was empty.

Brenda's face collapsed.

“No.”

“What was there?”

“A blue folder.”

“What happened to it?”

She looked at Mark.

He shook his head.

“I didn't take it.”

“Then who did?”

Nobody answered.

Sarah called.

She had found something at our house.

A blue folder.

It had been hidden beneath the floorboard in Arthur's old study.

I felt cold.

Arthur had known someone would search his bedroom.

He had moved the real evidence before he died.

Sarah read the first page over the phone.

It contained Helen's medical history.

The second page contained a list of payments.

The third contained one name.

Dr. Alan Mercer.

But there was another name beneath it.

Elena.

Then a third.

Gerald.

The fourth page was handwritten.

Helen knew about all three.

She threatened to expose them.

I asked what was on the last page.

Sarah paused.

“There's a date.”

“What date?”

“The day Helen died.”

And beneath it:

SHE WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO DIE THAT NIGHT.

I felt my throat tighten.

Arthur had known.

Helen's death hadn't been planned for that night.

Someone had made a mistake.

Or someone had panicked.

Sarah continued reading.

The final line said:

The person who gave the order was not my enemy.

I stared at the dark window.

“Then who was it?”

Sarah answered quietly.

“Someone Arthur loved.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: The Blue Folder Changed the Meaning
