ago.”

Arthur had not moved into our house yet.

Claire was driving home from work.

She saw a car stopped on the shoulder of a rural road.

Arthur was inside.

His car had been struck from behind.

Claire stopped.

She called an ambulance.

Arthur had a broken wrist and several bruises.

The other driver had fled.

Claire stayed until help arrived.

That was the night Arthur first asked for her phone number.

I remembered her telling me a different story.

She said she met Dad because he needed a place to stay after Helen died.

That was true.

But incomplete.

She had known him before.

“How long did you know know.”

I felt anger rising.

“What else don't I know?”

Claire looked at Sarah.

“Dad was investigating the accident.”

Ruiz had returned.

She listened.

Arthur believed the crash was deliberate.

His brakes had been tampered with.

He suspected someone wanted him dead.

He had hired a private investigator.

The investigator found that the vehicle had been followed for three weeks.

By whom?

Mark.

He had been watching Arthur's movements.

Why?

Because he knew about the investment account.

Claire had discovered this before anyone else.

She confronted Mark.

He denied it.

Arthur asked Claire to keep quiet.

He feared Mark would retaliate.

That was the beginning of their secret.

The reason Claire later agreed to let Arthur live with us was not simply compassion.

It was protection.

She believed he was still in danger.

And she was right.

I sat down.

“You should have told me.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of Mark?”

“Yes.”

“Of Dad?”

“No.”

“Then of me?”

She looked at me.

“Of losing you.”

The answer broke something in me.

Arthur had spent twenty years believing secrets could preserve relationships.

Claire had learned the same lesson from him.

Neither had understood that secrets eventually demanded payment.

Ruiz asked Claire about the night before Arthur died.

Claire said she had been home.

She had gone to bed early.

She heard Arthur speaking on the phone around nine.

She didn't know who called.

At ten, she heard the back door.

She assumed Arthur was locking it.

She didn't investigate.

I remembered that night.

I had been downstairs.

Arthur had asked me whether I needed anything.

I told him no.

Claire had been upstairs.

That meant someone could have entered without us seeing.

Ruiz asked whether Claire had ever owned white sneakers.

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Mark had been trying to make her look guilty.

But why?

Sarah opened Mark's notebook.

There was another page.

A payment to Elena.

A payment to Mercer.

A payment to Gerald.

And then one final payment.

Recipient: C.P.

Initials.

Claire Pierce.

I looked at my wife.

She stared at the page.

“I never received that.”

Sarah checked the account.

“The transfer was rejected.”

“By whom?”

“Arthur.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“What was it for?”

Sarah read the description.

SECURITY SERVICES.

I looked at Claire.

“You hired someone?”

“No.”

“Then why did Dad think you did?”

“I don't know.”

Sarah turned the page.

There was a handwritten note.

She is protecting me.

That sounded like Arthur.

But the handwriting wasn't his.

It was Mark's.

He had been documenting Claire's movements.

Not accusing her.

Watching her.

I realized something.

Mark's entire notebook might have been designed to build a case against someone.

But the question was who.

Sarah continued reading.

Mark had recorded Claire meeting Arthur's investigator.

He had recorded her visiting the clinic.

He had recorded her speaking with Elena.

He had even recorded her meeting Samuel.

Every meeting had been labeled.

PROTECTION.

Not CONSPIRACY.

Mark had been trying to discover who was helping Arthur.

He suspected Claire.

But he hadn't proved anything.

Then we found the final page.

A date.

The day before Arthur died.

Under it:

CLAIRE KNOWS ABOUT THE ORIGINAL WILL.

I looked at her.

“What original will?”

She started crying.

“Dad showed me.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

“What did it say?”

She hesitated.

“That he was leaving everything to you.”

I stared at her.

“I already knew that.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“The first will left everything to you.”

“Then what changed?”

“Dad changed it.”

“To Samuel?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he thought you would refuse the money.”

I didn't understand.

Claire explained that Arthur believed I would use the inheritance to pay off debts, secure the children's future, and give Samuel what he needed.

But he also feared that leaving the money directly to Samuel would expose him.

So he created the trust.

The first will was a decoy.

The second was the real plan.

And Claire had known about both.

Ruiz asked whether Claire had told Mark.

“No.”

“Did you tell Gerald?”

“No.”

“Mercer?”

“No.”

“Kevin?”

“No.”

“Then how did Mark know?”

Claire looked at me.

“Because Dad told him.”

Sarah shook her head.

“Arthur would never.”

“He did.”

Claire explained that Arthur had confronted Mark six months earlier.

He told him the estate would not go to the children.

Mark became furious.

He threatened to challenge the will.

Arthur recorded the conversation.

The recording was in the storage unit.

We retrieved it.

Mark's voice was unmistakable.

“You're giving everything to David?”

Arthur answered yes.

“Why?”

“Because he stayed.”

Mark laughed.

“He hates you.”

“He stayed.”

“You'll destroy this family.”

“No.”

Arthur's voice became quiet.

“You already did.”

The recording ended.

I looked at Claire.

For twenty years, I had thought Arthur's presence had divided our family.

Now I understood.

The family had already been divided.

Arthur had simply moved into the one home where he could still feel safe.

Ruiz received a message.

Gerald had made a new statement.

He claimed Mark had not hired him to kill Arthur.

Mark had hired him to monitor Claire.

Why?

Because Mark believed Claire had access to the real will.

Gerald followed her.

He learned about Samuel.

He learned about Nora.

He learned about the trust.

And he began stealing money.

But someone else had escalated the plan.

Mercer.

Mercer admitted under questioning that he had been paid to administer a fatal dose if Arthur refused to sign the new papers.

Arthur refused.

Mercer did not inject him.

But someone later did.

The police found a second medical kit in Gerald's vehicle.

It contained the missing vial.

The fingerprints were incomplete.

But one clear print belonged to Elena.

She broke down when confronted.

“I touched it.”

“Why?”

“Because I tried to stop them.”

She explained that after Arthur left the clinic, she discovered Mercer had prepared the injection.

She took the vial.

She didn't know what to do with it.

She later gave it to Gerald because he promised to destroy it.

Instead, Gerald kept it.

That still didn't identify Arthur's killer.

Then Elena remembered something.

The person who came to her apartment the night Arthur died.

A woman.

Not Nora.

Not Claire.

Someone she recognized.

She gave police a name.

Brenda.

Brenda had threatened her.

She wanted the vial.

She wanted the evidence gone.

I felt sick.

Brenda had been crying at the house.

She had acted terrified.

But perhaps fear and guilt could exist together.

Ruiz said officers were searching for her.

Then Sarah opened the final page of Arthur's notebook.

A handwritten note was underneath the payment records.

BRING BRENDA TO ME IF I DIE.

I looked at Sarah.

“Why?”

She read the next line.

Because she knows what happened to Helen.

Claire froze.

“Mom?”

Arthur's wife.

The woman we had believed died naturally twenty years earlier.

Sarah looked at the page again.

There was another sentence.

Helen did not die of natural causes.

The room seemed to tilt.

Arthur had spent twenty years grieving his wife.

But according to his final note, her death had been part of the same conspiracy.

And the person who knew the truth was Brenda.

The daughter Arthur had left one dollar.

The daughter who had helped forge documents.

The daughter who had disappeared.

The daughter who now had every reason to run.

Ruiz's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression hardened.

“Where?”

She listened.

Then looked at us.

“We found Brenda.”

“Where?”

“At Arthur's
