arrived at the cabin before dawn.

She looked nothing like the woman in the old photograph.

She was forty-eight, perhaps, with dark hair streaked heavily with gray and a tired face that suggested she had spent years waiting for answers.

Samuel opened the door.

For several seconds, they simply stared at each other.

Then Nora said, “You look like him.”

Samuel nodded.

“So do you.”

She smiled sadly.

“I was hoping you'd say that.”

Claire stood behind him.

Nora looked at her.

“And you must be Claire.”

Claire nodded.

Nora entered.

She didn't look at Mark's empty chair.

She looked at the documents.

“Arthur left something for me.”

Sarah asked, “What?”

Nora placed a sealed envelope on the table.

“He mailed it two weeks before he died.”

Sarah examined the handwriting.

“It is his.”

Nora nodded.

“I didn't open it.”

“Why?”

“He told me to wait.”

Samuel looked at her.

“Did you know about me?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since I was twelve.”

Samuel stared.

“Our mother told you?”

“She told me the whole story.”

Nora explained that Eleanor had never married after Arthur.

She raised Nora alone.

She told Nora that Arthur had another family.

But she never allowed Nora to contact him.

She feared Helen would blame her.

She feared Arthur would deny them.

She feared losing the small amount of support he provided.

Nora said Eleanor had received money from Arthur for years.

After Eleanor died, the payments continued.

They were sent to Nora.

Arthur had never stopped supporting her.

“He knew where I lived,” Nora said.

“Did he ever meet you?”

“Twice.”

“When?”

“When I was twenty-three.”

Samuel looked stunned.

“You met him?”

“He didn't tell me who he was at first.”

“Why?”

“He wanted to know whether I hated him.”

“And?”

“I did.”

Nora smiled sadly.

“Then I saw him cry.”

Arthur had apparently told her he regretted abandoning Eleanor.

He had wanted to introduce her to the family.

Nora refused.

She didn't want to be someone's secret daughter.

Years passed.

Then Arthur contacted her again.

This time, he said the truth was finally going to come out.

Nora had agreed to meet him.

That meeting happened three months before his death.

“He told me he was changing his will.”

Samuel asked what she expected.

“Nothing.”

“Then why did he change it?”

Nora looked at him.

“Because he wanted us to have the truth.”

Sarah opened Nora's envelope.

Inside was a handwritten statement.

Arthur acknowledged Nora as his daughter.

He acknowledged Samuel.

He also wrote that the estate had been structured so neither child could be pressured by the others.

The money would be divided equally after debts and obligations were settled.

But there was another condition.

The children had to agree that no one would receive money until the investigation into Arthur's death was complete.

Mark had known.

Gerald had known.

Kevin had known.

And now Nora had appeared.

I asked her about the photograph of her with Gerald.

She didn't deny it.

“I met him.”

“When?”

“Three weeks before Arthur died.”

“Why?”

“He contacted me.”

“What did he want?”

“To know what Dad had promised me.”

I stared at her.

“Did you tell him?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I didn't trust him.”

She looked at Sarah.

“I knew Gerald was taking money from Dad.”

“How?”

“He asked me to sign something.”

“What?”

“A waiver.”

“For your inheritance?”

“Yes.”

She refused.

Gerald threatened to expose her.

Nora said she had gone to Arthur.

She told him.

Arthur became furious.

He said Gerald had no authority to negotiate with her.

Then Arthur told her he had evidence against Gerald.

“Did he mention Mark?”

Nora shook her head.

“Not by name.”

“Did he mention Kevin?”

“No.”

“Did he mention anyone?”

She looked at Claire.

“Yes.”

My wife stiffened.

“Who?”

“Your husband.”

I stepped forward.

“What about me?”

Nora looked uncomfortable.

“He said you were the only person he trusted.”

That was not what I expected.

“He told me if anything happened to him, you would protect Samuel.”

I thought of the letter.

The trust.

The house.

The ledger.

Arthur had been building a chain of protection around people he believed were vulnerable.

And he had put me at its center without telling me.

Ruiz returned with new information.

Gerald had admitted that he had stolen money.

He had also admitted that Mark gave him information about Arthur's assets.

But Gerald still denied poisoning Arthur.

He claimed the poison came from someone else.

“Who?”

“Gerald says he doesn't know.”

Ruiz placed a photograph on the table.

It showed the back door of Arthur's house.

A timestamp.

10:13 p.m.

A person entered.

The image was grainy.

But the clothing was visible.

Dark jacket.

Light shoes.

A baseball cap.

Ruiz zoomed in.

“Kevin?”

Kevin's face appeared on another photograph.

Same jacket.

Same shoes.

But the detectives had another image.

The person entering Arthur's house at 10:13 had a distinctive limp.

Kevin had no limp.

Mark did.

I looked at Claire.

“Mark.”

Ruiz nodded.

“That's what we believe.”

“But Kevin said he was there.”

“He was.”

“Then there were two people.”

“Yes.”

The timeline became clearer.

Mark entered at 10:13.

Kevin had already been hiding nearby.

Gerald arrived later.

Three people.

One house.

One dying man.

And a thermos that could have been poisoned by any one of them.

Sarah asked Gerald about the thermos.

He claimed Mark had told him to remove it.

“Why?”

“To destroy the evidence.”

“Did Mark know it was poisoned?”

Gerald said no.

“He told me Dad was going to die anyway.”

The words made me sick.

“Why would Mark say that?”

Ruiz looked at me.

“Because Arthur had already been poisoned.”

She showed us the preliminary toxicology report.

The digoxin level was high.

But not immediately fatal.

Arthur had likely ingested it earlier.

Hours earlier.

The thermos might not have been the source.

I stared at the report.

“Then why was it contaminated?”

“To make us think that was the cause.”

Someone had planted a false trail.

The thermos was bait.

The person who poisoned Arthur wanted investigators to blame whoever touched it.

Kevin had touched it.

Gerald had touched it.

Mark had been seen near it.

Too many suspects.

Ruiz said the medical examiner had found another clue.

A small puncture mark on Arthur's upper arm.

I looked at Sarah.

“An injection?”

“Possibly.”

The digoxin could have been administered through an injection.

If so, the thermos was a distraction.

Nora suddenly spoke.

“Dad was afraid of needles.”

Sarah looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“He told me.”

“When?”

“The last time I saw him.”

Nora reached into her purse.

She removed a folded piece of paper.

“Dad gave me this.”

It was a medical appointment card.

The appointment was scheduled for the day he died.

At a private clinic.

The doctor was listed as Dr. Alan Mercer.

Sarah frowned.

“I know that name.”

Ruiz looked at her.

“Why?”

“He was one of Arthur's physicians.”

“Was?”

“Arthur stopped seeing him six months ago.”

“Why?”

Sarah checked her records.

“Arthur believed Mercer had shared confidential medical information with Gerald.”

I felt a chill.

The doctor.

The adviser.

The family.

Everyone seemed connected.

Then Nora looked at me.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

She said Arthur had told her that the person who killed him had already been inside our house.

My skin prickled.

“When?”

“The night before he died.”

I remembered the open front door.

The missing envelope.

The search through Arthur's room.

Someone had entered our house after his death.

But Arthur had said the person had been inside before.

Nora reached into her purse.

“He gave me a name.”

“Whose?”

She looked at Claire.

Then she said it.

“Dr. Mercer.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The Doctor Arthur Had Stopped Trusting Was Connected to the Missing
