apologized.”

I looked at him.

“That's all?”

“No.”

Samuel looked toward the dark road.

“He cried.”

I said nothing.

“He told me he had chosen the wrong life.”

That was the first time I understood why Arthur had become so attached to our family.

He had been trying to repair something that could never be repaired.

Samuel returned inside.

Sarah was holding another document.

“This came from the bank.”

It showed an attempted transfer made the night before Arthur died.

Two hundred thousand dollars.

The recipient was a company linked to Gerald.

The transfer failed.

Arthur had stopped it.

The timestamp was 8:41 p.m.

The recording of Mark's confrontation was at 9:12.

Kevin's visit came later.

Gerald appeared after that.

The sequence was beginning to form.

Gerald had tried to take the money.

Mark had confronted Arthur.

Kevin had come asking for money.

Then Gerald arrived.

But one question remained.

Who had let Gerald inside?

The farmhouse door opened.

A detective stepped inside.

“We found something in Gerald's vehicle.”

He placed a plastic evidence bag on the table.

Inside was a key.

A brass key.

Number 17.

The same key Arthur had hidden in his nightstand.

I stared at it.

“That isn't possible.”

Sarah looked at me.

“Why?”

“Arthur had the key.”

“Apparently not.”

The detective explained that Gerald had a duplicate.

But the key had something else attached.

A tiny strip of paper.

On it was an address.

Not Arthur's.

Not Samuel's.

Mine.

My home address.

My hands went cold.

Gerald had a key to Arthur's house.

And he had my address.

Ruiz looked at me.

“Did Gerald ever come to your house?”

“No.”

“Are you certain?”

I thought back.

Then I remembered something.

Three months earlier, a package had appeared on our porch.

There was no return address.

Inside was a new coffee maker.

Arthur had laughed when he saw it.

“Someone knows you drink too much coffee.”

I had thrown away the packaging.

Arthur had kept the box.

He had written something on it.

I had never asked why.

Sarah suddenly looked alarmed.

“Where is that box?”

“At home.”

“We need to go back.”

We left immediately.

The house looked exactly as we had left it.

Except the front door was open.

Ruiz drew her weapon.

Everyone stopped.

The detectives entered first.

The living room was untouched.

The kitchen was untouched.

Arthur's bedroom door was open.

The drawer where I had found the letter was pulled out.

The envelope was gone.

The photograph was gone.

Someone had been searching.

Claire whispered, “Gerald.”

Ruiz shook her head.

“Maybe.”

I walked into the kitchen.

The coffee maker sat on the counter.

The box was still underneath.

Arthur's handwriting was visible.

I opened it.

Inside was a second memory card.

And a note.

HE WILL COME FOR THIS.

My heart began pounding.

Sarah took the card.

A video played.

Arthur appeared again.

But this time he wasn't alone.

Gerald Price sat across from him.

Arthur spoke first.

“You know I changed the will.”

Gerald nodded.

“I know.”

“You've stolen from me.”

Gerald smiled.

“You'll never prove it.”

Arthur leaned forward.

“I don't need to.”

Gerald's smile disappeared.

Arthur reached beneath the table.

He pulled out a folder.

Inside were copies of everything.

Bank transfers.

Forged documents.

Recorded conversations.

Then Arthur said something that made me understand why Gerald had been desperate.

“You're not the person I'm most worried about.”

Gerald asked who.

Arthur looked directly at the camera.

“My son already knows.”

The video ended.

Samuel looked at me.

“Which son?”

I shook my head.

Arthur had two sons.

Mark.

And Samuel.

Ruiz rewound the recording.

Arthur had looked at the camera when he said it.

But the camera angle showed only one person sitting across from him.

Gerald.

Then a shadow appeared behind Arthur.

Someone had been standing outside the room.

Someone listening.

Someone Arthur knew.

The video froze.

Ruiz zoomed in.

The shadow's hand was visible.

A wedding ring caught the light.

Claire gasped.

“That
