dollars.

The recipient was Samuel Reed.

Mark confronted Arthur.

Arthur told him the money was none of his business.

Mark investigated.

He found Samuel's name in an old court document.

Then he found a photograph.

He realized Samuel was likely Arthur's son.

But he didn't tell the others.

He wanted to find Samuel himself.

He believed Samuel could be persuaded to surrender his claim.

Ruiz asked what he intended to offer.

“Money.”

“How he do?”

Mark's eyes filled with anger.

“He abandoned Samuel.”

The room went quiet.

Arthur had never told us that.

Mark explained that Samuel's mother had been pregnant when Arthur married Helen.

Arthur chose Helen.

He promised Samuel's mother he would provide financial support.

But he never acknowledged the child publicly.

Samuel grew up believing his father wanted nothing to do with him.

Arthur had spent decades regretting that decision.

That was why he had quietly sent money.

That was why he kept the photograph.

That was why he had finally contacted Samuel.

Mark's voice broke.

“And then Dad decided to give him everything.”

I looked at the will.

“Not everything.”

Mark laughed.

“You're still defending him?”

“No.”

I looked toward the porch.

“I'm trying to understand him.”

The detectives received another message.

Brenda's car had been spotted near a motel.

Ruiz immediately ordered officers there.

We followed separately.

The motel was nearly an hour away.

It was an old roadside property with faded signs and a cracked parking lot.

Brenda's car was parked beside Room 12.

The door was open.

Nobody was inside.

On the bed was the photograph.

Beside it was a note.

DAVID, IF YOU'RE READING THIS, I FOUND HIM.

My heart sank.

The note continued.

I didn't know how to tell you.

I was afraid Mark would find him first.

That sentence changed everything.

Brenda had not taken Samuel.

She had been protecting him.

There was another address.

A small farm outside town.

Ruiz sent officers ahead.

We arrived twenty minutes later.

The farmhouse was dark.

A man stepped onto the porch.

He was around fifty-five.

Gray hair.

Lean face.

Arthur's eyes.

I knew immediately.

He looked at me.

“David?”

I nodded.

“Samuel?”

He nodded.

For a moment neither of us spoke.

Then Samuel looked past me.

“Where is Claire?”

“She’s here.”

Claire stepped forward.

Samuel's expression softened.

“You look like him.”

Claire began crying.

“So do you.”

He smiled sadly.

“I've heard that my whole life.”

Mark approached from behind us.

Samuel's smile disappeared.

“You.”

Mark stopped.

“You know me?”

Samuel stared at him.

“You came to my motel.”

Mark said nothing.

“You offered me one hundred thousand dollars.”

Claire turned toward Mark.

“You found him.”

Mark looked away.

Samuel continued.

“You told me Arthur had no intention of acknowledging me.”

“I was trying to help.”

“You threatened me.”

“I didn't.”

“You said if I went public, my life would become difficult.”

Mark's face hardened.

“You don't understand what was at stake.”

Samuel laughed.

“My father.”

Mark didn't answer.

Samuel looked at Sarah.

“You're the attorney.”

“Yes.”

“Did he leave me something?”

Sarah nodded.

“He intended to.”

“Intended?”

“The will we have is complicated.”

Samuel looked at me.

“I know.”

I frowned.

“How?”

He reached into his coat.

He removed a sealed envelope.

Arthur's handwriting was on it.

Samuel handed it to me.

“He mailed this six months ago.”

I recognized the paper.

“What does it say?”

“I haven't opened it.”

“Why?”

“Because he asked me to wait until he was dead.”

I looked at Sarah.

She nodded.

“Open it.”

Inside was a single page.

Samuel,

If you are reading this, I failed to keep you out of my children's reach.

I closed my eyes.

Arthur knew.

He had known this was coming.

The letter said Samuel was not merely his son.

He was the reason Arthur had created the estate structure.

The money would not go directly to Samuel.

It would first pass through me.

Arthur believed that if Samuel appeared suddenly as a wealthy heir, the people who had already tried to steal his money would target him.

So Arthur had chosen me as a temporary trustee.

I looked at Samuel.

“You knew?”

He nodded.

“He explained it when we met.”

“Then why didn't you come?”

“Because he told me not to.”

“Why?”

“Because he suspected someone close to him was monitoring his communications.”

Sarah looked at the detectives.

“That's important.”

Samuel nodded.

“He said the person had access to family information.”

Mark stepped forward.

“Did he name me?”

Samuel looked at him.

“No.”

Mark exhaled.

Then Samuel said, “He named someone else.”

Brenda arrived in the driveway.

She ran toward us.

“Samuel!”

He turned.

She stopped several feet away.

“I’m sorry.”

Samuel looked at her.

“You knew.”

Brenda nodded.

“I found the old letters.”

“Why did you hide them?”

“I was afraid.”

“Of Mark?”

She looked at him.

“Yes.”

Mark shouted.

“That's a lie.”

Ruiz stepped between them.

“Everyone stays where they are.”

Brenda began crying.

She explained that she had found Arthur's letters two weeks earlier.

The letters revealed that Samuel was his son.

She also found notes about someone monitoring Arthur's bank activity.

She believed Mark was involved.

She confronted Mark.

He threatened to expose her role in the forged documents if she didn't stay quiet.

So she kept silent.

Until Arthur died.

Then she decided to find Samuel herself.

Samuel looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because Dad loved you.”

Mark laughed.

“Dad loved money.”

Samuel looked at him.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“He loved people badly.”

That sentence hit me.

It was exactly right.

Arthur had loved us.

But he had spent decades believing secrecy was a form of protection.

It wasn't.

It had created damage.

Sarah asked Samuel what he knew about the night Arthur died.

Samuel's face changed.

“I wasn't there.”

“Did Arthur call you?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The afternoon before.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me he had changed his will.”

“What else?”

“He said he was afraid.”

“Of whom?”

Samuel hesitated.

Then he looked directly at Mark.

“He said someone in the family knew about the new arrangement.”

Mark stepped forward.

“You're lying.”

Samuel didn't move.

“He told me if anything happened to him, I should trust David.”

I looked at Sarah.

She nodded slowly.

Arthur had trusted me because I had never asked what he owned.

That was the difference.

Then Samuel reached into his pocket again.

This time he produced a small memory card.

“What's that?”

“Something he gave me.”

“What is on it?”

“A video.”

He looked at the detectives.

“Arthur recorded it himself.”

Ruiz took the card.

They played it on a laptop inside the farmhouse.

Arthur appeared on the screen.

He looked tired.

Older than I remembered.

But his voice was steady.

He explained that he had been receiving threatening messages.

He believed someone was trying to force him to change his will.

Then he said something that made Mark's face go blank.

“I know who is doing it.”

Arthur paused.

“But I don't know whether that person is acting alone.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then another video file appeared.

Its timestamp was from the night before Arthur's death.

Arthur was sitting at the kitchen table.

The camera angle showed the thermos beside him.

The back door opened.

Someone entered.

Arthur looked up.

“Why are you here?”

The figure stepped into view.

It wasn't Mark.

It wasn't Kevin.

It wasn't Brenda.

It wasn't Claire.

It was someone none of us recognized.

Samuel whispered, “That's him.”

Ruiz leaned closer.

“Who?”

Samuel pointed at the screen.

“Arthur's financial adviser.”

The man on the video placed a hand on the thermos.

Then the recording cut to black.

<a
