the photographs in Arthur's bedroom.

There were pictures of his wife, Helen, and their four children.

No one else.

But there had always been one photograph I couldn't explain.

It showed Arthur as a much younger man, standing beside a woman I had never seen.

The photograph had been tucked behind the others.

I had found it years ago while helping Arthur move his dresser.

He had taken it from my hand immediately.

“That's nobody.”

I had laughed.

“Everybody is his house?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To discuss the will.”

“Did he tell you about another twenty years.”

“Because you tried to steal from him.”

Ruiz raised a hand.

“Enough.”

The detective turned toward Sarah.

“You said there was a sealed section in the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“And Kevin said he opened it.”

“He claimed there was another everything.”

“You said that before.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me now.”

She swallowed.

“Dad once told me he had a child before he married Mom.”

I stared at her.

“You knew?”

“Not for certain.”

“When?”

“About ten years ago.”

I felt something inside me sink.

“Ten years?”

She nodded.

“He showed me that photograph.”

“The woman?”

“Yes.”

“Who was she?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Dad asked me not to.”

I closed my eyes.

Arthur had spent twenty years asking everyone to keep secrets.

And everyone had obeyed him.

Except the people who wanted his money.

Claire told me that Arthur had received a letter years earlier.

The letter came from a man named Samuel.

Arthur had never shown her the entire letter.

Only the first page.

The writer said he believed Arthur was his biological father.

He had been raised by his mother and her husband.

His mother had recently died.

Before she died, she told Samuel the truth.

Arthur was his father.

Arthur had apparently sent money.

Not directly.

Through an attorney.

Claire said she remembered seeing a bank transfer.

The amount was small.

Five thousand dollars.

Then another.

Then ten thousand.

Every few years.

I looked at Sarah.

“Did you know about these payments?”

She nodded slowly.

“Some of them.”

“How many?”

“Several.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Arthur specifically instructed me not to disclose anything until his death.”

Mark stood.

“So the lawyer knew.”

Sarah looked at him.

“Yes.”

“And she still gave the estate to David.”

“Under the valid will I witnessed.”

Mark laughed.

“You expect us to believe that?”

“No,” Sarah said. “I expect the court to believe the documents.”

Detective Ruiz asked whether Sarah had any record of Samuel's full name.

Sarah searched her folder.

Then she stopped.

“I have something.”

She removed a photocopy.

At the top was a handwritten note.

SAMUEL REED.

Underneath was an address.

Claire read it.

“That address is in Colorado.”

I looked at Sarah.

“Does he live there?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why did Arthur leave everything to him?”

Sarah looked toward the missing ledger.

“I think that's what Kevin discovered.”

The detectives left to search for Kevin.

Mark paced near the fireplace.

Brenda remained seated.

Claire went into Arthur's room.

I followed.

His bed was made.

His reading glasses were on the nightstand.

His green cap hung from the bedpost.

For twenty years, I had wanted this room empty.

Now I couldn't stand the thought of anyone touching it.

Claire opened the dresser.

“Dad kept papers here.”

She pulled out a wooden box.

Inside were old receipts, photographs, and letters.

At the bottom was the photograph I remembered.

Arthur stood beside the unknown woman.

She was young.

Maybe twenty-five.

Arthur looked barely thirty.

Between them was a baby.

I stared at the photograph.

On the back, Arthur had written three words.

MARCH 17, 1967.

Claire looked at me.

“That's the year Dad married Mom.”

My skin prickled.

The baby was born the same year.

A second note was written beneath the date.

Samuel.

I sat down on the edge of the bed.

“Arthur had a son.”

Claire nodded.

“Apparently.”

I turned the photograph over again.

There was an address.

Not Colorado.

A town in Kansas.

“Why would Kevin say he was the child no one knew existed?”

“Because he probably found the sealed document.”

I looked at Arthur's nightstand.

Something caught my eye.

A tiny brass key sat beneath his reading glasses.

I picked it up.

A number was engraved on it.

17.

Claire frowned.

“What's that?”

“I don't know.”

I remembered Arthur's habit.

Whenever he wanted me to repair something, he left the necessary part beside his coffee.

A screw.

A hinge.

A battery.

Never instructions.

He expected me to figure it out.

I smiled despite myself.

Then I saw the drawer.

The bottom drawer of his nightstand had always been locked.

Arthur had told me the key was lost.

I inserted the brass key.

The lock turned.

Inside was a single envelope.

No name.

No address.

Only one sentence.

FOR THE PERSON WHO FINDS THE TRUTH TOO LATE.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Arthur explained that Samuel had contacted him again six months earlier.

He had finally agreed to meet.

The meeting took place at a diner outside Denver.

Arthur wrote that Samuel was not asking for money.

He wanted something else.

A father's name.

Arthur had given it to him.

He had also given Samuel a copy of his birth certificate and a photograph.

Then Arthur wrote something that made me stop.

Samuel had refused the inheritance.

He said he didn't want his father's money.

He wanted his father to acknowledge him publicly.

Arthur had promised he would.

But then Arthur discovered that someone was watching Samuel.

Someone who had learned about the inheritance.

Someone who wanted Samuel gone before the estate could change hands.

I read the sentence twice.

“Someone wanted Samuel gone?”

Claire came closer.

“Who?”

The letter didn't say.

Arthur had written that he could not safely explain the identity.

He had hidden the evidence.

He had arranged the will so that the estate would first pass to me.

That stopped me.

I read the paragraph again.

Arthur had left the estate to me not because I was the final beneficiary.

Because he trusted me to protect the person who was.

The legal transfer would occur only after a condition was met.

Samuel had to appear.

He had to prove his identity.

And he had to survive long enough to claim what Arthur had left him.

I looked at Claire.

“He used me.”

She shook her head.

“He trusted you.”

“No. He put me in the middle of something I didn't understand.”

A sound came from the hallway.

We both turned.

Mark stood there.

He had heard us.

“Give me the letter.”

I folded it.

“No.”

He stepped forward.

“You don't understand what's happening.”

“Then explain it.”

He didn't.

His eyes moved to the photograph.

“Where did you get that?”

“Arthur's drawer.”

Mark's face changed.

“That's Samuel.”

“You knew?”

He looked away.

“I heard the name.”

“From who?”

“Dad.”

“Why didn't you tell us?”

Mark said nothing.

Then Claire noticed something.

“Where's Brenda?”

Mark turned.

The hallway was empty.

A moment later, the front door slammed.

Mark ran outside.

I followed him to the porch.

Brenda's car was already pulling away.

In her hand, visible through the window, was a folded piece of paper.

The photograph.

She had taken it.

Mark stood beside me.

“She knows where he is.”

I looked at him.

“Who?”

“Samuel.”

The words barely left his mouth.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

His face changed.

“Where?”

He listened.

Then he looked at me.

“Brenda found him.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Brenda Found the Man Arthur Had Hidden for
