doorknob.

Nobody spoke.

Sarah closed the laptop.

“The police have already collected the evidence.”

Mark turned.

“You have one recording of an argument.”

“We have considerably more than that.”

He released the doorknob.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear on his face.

Sarah placed Arthur's dented thermos inside a clear evidence bag.

“The laboratory found traces of digoxin inside it.”

Noah frowned.

“Grandpa never took that.”

Claire shook her head.

“He didn't.”

Sarah explained that Arthur had never been prescribed the medication.

In large amounts, it could be fatal to an elderly person.

Claire grabbed the back of the chair.

I caught her before she fell.

“No,” she whispered.

“We thought he died peacefully.”

“So did I,” I said.

Sarah looked at the thermos.

“Someone may have wanted you to think that.”

Mark immediately pointed toward me.

“David hated having him here.”

I took a step forward.

Noah caught my arm.

“Dad.”

Mark continued.

“Everyone heard the recording.”

Sarah looked at him.

“Everyone heard the part you selected.”

Mark went quiet.

Sarah reopened the complete recording from the night before Arthur died.

Arthur's voice came first.

“Sarah, he knows about the will.”

Mark answered.

“You should have given us the money.”

Arthur reminded him about the attempted theft.

Mark dismissed it as something that happened twenty years ago.

Arthur disagreed.

“A thief doesn't become innocent because time passes.”

Mark accused him of giving everything to a man who hated him.

Arthur answered that I had lost my temper.

Then he reminded Mark that I had returned with a blanket.

Mark said I wanted the money.

Arthur answered that I didn't even know he had money.

For twenty years, I had believed Arthur had nothing.

He still fed me.

That sentence silenced me.

Then came a crash.

Mark ordered him to sign a new will.

Arthur refused.

Mark told him he owed his real children.

Arthur answered that his real child was the one who gave him a home without asking for a bank statement.

Mark threatened him.

Arthur told him he regretted spending so many years making excuses for him.

A door slammed.

Then silence.

Sarah paused the recording.

Mark straightened.

“That proves I left.”

“Yes.”

“So it proves I didn't kill him.”

“It proves you threatened him.”

“Threatening isn't murder.”

“No.”

Sarah moved the recording forward.

The clock on the screen read 10:16 p.m.

A door opened.

Footsteps crossed the porch.

Arthur spoke.

“What are you doing here?”

Another voice answered.

“I came to apologize.”

The voice was muffled.

Arthur asked how the person had entered.

“The spare key.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Only family members knew where that key was.

Arthur had asked Claire to replace it because he was afraid of falling while they were away.

The visitor sat down.

Then came the sentence that made Kevin stop breathing.

“I heard you changed the will.”

Arthur asked who had told him.

“Mark.”

Sarah looked at Mark.

Mark didn't move.

The visitor said he didn't need everything.

He needed eighty thousand dollars.

Arthur refused.

The visitor said people were going to hurt him.

Arthur offered to call the police.

The man refused.

Arthur offered treatment.

The man said he didn't need treatment.

He needed money.

I looked at Kevin.

His face had gone gray.

Sarah continued.

Arthur said, “Go home, Kevin.”

Kevin in the room whispered, “That could be anybody.”

Then his recorded voice came through the speakers.

He begged Arthur for help.

He admitted that he had helped with the earlier fraud.

Arthur reminded him that Mark had planned to blame everything on him.

Kevin said people were threatening him over his gambling debt.

Arthur refused to give him money.

Then came a metallic sound.

Arthur asked what Kevin was doing.

Kevin said he was washing the thermos.

At ten o'clock at night.

Arthur ordered him to put it down.

Kevin became angry.

Something struck the table.

Arthur gasped.

Footsteps rushed away.

The back door slammed.

Sarah stopped the recording.

Nobody looked at Kevin.

Then everyone did.

“What did you put in the thermos?” Claire asked.

“Nothing.”

Sarah placed another document beside the ledger.

A pharmacy record.

Kevin's late wife had once been prescribed digoxin.

Sixty tablets.

Three weeks before her death.

Kevin stared at the paper.

“That was twelve years ago.”

“You never returned the unused medication,” Sarah said.

“I threw it away.”

“You cannot prove that.”

Kevin looked toward Mark.

“Tell them.”

Mark stepped away.

“Tell them what?”

“You sent me there.”

“I told you Dad changed the will.”

“You knew he'd leave everything to David.”

“I never told you to poison him.”

“I didn't poison him.”

Brenda began crying.

“You opened his thermos.”

“To wash it.”

“No one believes that,” Noah said.

Kevin pointed at Mark.

“He planned everything.”

Mark turned sharply.

“What does that mean?”

“He knew about the will.”

Mark stared at the blue ledger.

Kevin did too.

Sarah noticed.

“What is inside that ledger?”

“Nothing,” Kevin said.

“Then why are you looking at it?”

He didn't answer.

Sarah picked up the ledger.

“The expense records occupy only part of this book.”

She turned it over.

A thin strip of blue paper had been sealed across the final pages.

Arthur had written a warning.

TO BE OPENED ONLY AFTER MY WILL IS READ.

Mark stepped forward.

Sarah pulled the ledger toward herself.

“No one touches this.”

The doorbell rang.

Three slow knocks followed.

Sarah looked toward the front entrance.

“The detectives.”

Kevin suddenly ran.

He shoved Brenda aside and disappeared down the hallway.

Noah chased him.

“Stop!”

A door slammed.

I followed.

Kevin had locked himself inside the downstairs bathroom.

I pounded on the door.

“Open it!”

The bathroom window shattered.

Noah kicked the door.

It flew inward.

Cold air rushed through the broken window.

Kevin was gone.

The detectives entered through the front door.

One of them immediately called for officers outside.

Sirens began approaching.

I turned toward the living room.

Then Sarah screamed.

We ran back.

The coffee table was empty.

The blue ledger was gone.

Mark stood near the front door.

Brenda was crying beside the fireplace.

Lily stared toward the open back door.

“Kevin took it,” she whispered.

My phone rang.

UNKNOWN CALLER.

I answered.

Kevin's breathing filled the room.

“David.”

“Where are you?”

“Listen.”

“Where are you?”

“Arthur lied to all of you.”

Sarah moved closer.

“What did you do with the ledger?”

“I opened the sealed pages.”

My stomach tightened.

“What do they say?”

Kevin laughed.

It wasn't a happy sound.

“The will you just read is worthless.”

Sarah shook her head.

“That isn't possible.”

“There is another document inside the back cover.”

Mark stepped toward the phone.

“What document?”

Kevin ignored him.

“If you want the ledger back, come to Dad's old house at midnight.”

“The police are looking for you.”

“Then don't bring them.”

“Why should I trust you?”

There was silence.

Then Kevin's voice changed.

“Because Arthur wrote one final name in that ledger.”

My heart began pounding.

“What name?”

“The person who was supposed to receive the entire three-point-two million.”

I looked at Claire.

Sarah slowly shook her head.

“Arthur's signed will leaves everything to David.”

Kevin laughed softly.

“No.”

Mark stared at the phone.

“Then who gets it?”

For several seconds, there was only Kevin's breathing.

Then he whispered the words none of us expected.

“Arthur left everything to the child no one in this room knew existed.”

The call ended.
