answer.<\/p>\n<p>Because she was probably right.<\/p>\n<p>That hurt more than I wanted to admit.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah gathered the photographs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur eventually regretted hiding the truth Taxes, debts, and funeral expenses have been paid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned a page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe remaining estate is approximately three-point-two million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd who gets it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah read the clause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI, Arthur Benjamin Vance, leave the residue of my estate, including cash, securities, personal property, and investment holdings, to David Pierce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room exploded.<\/p>\n<p>Mark shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda screamed.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin kicked his chair aside.<\/p>\n<p>Claire stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>I felt nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Not happiness.<\/p>\n<p>Not relief.<\/p>\n<p>Only shame.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah continued.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had not left me the money as payment for feeding him.<\/p>\n<p>He had left it because, despite my anger, I had kept him safe.<\/p>\n<p>His biological children had spoken about love while trying to gain control of his accounts.<\/p>\n<p>I had spoken with anger while still getting up every morning and taking him to appointments.<\/p>\n<p>When words and actions conflict, Arthur wrote, trust the actions.<\/p>\n<p>Mark grabbed the will.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is invalid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah took it back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo witnesses and a physician were present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was being abused!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark pointed at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My face burned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called Dad dead weight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Mark smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad sent me an audio recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He played it.<\/p>\n<p>My own voice filled the room.<\/p>\n<p>I heard myself shouting about twenty years.<\/p>\n<p>Food.<\/p>\n<p>Heat.<\/p>\n<p>Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>The bedroom my children had shared.<\/p>\n<p>I heard myself call Arthur a burden.<\/p>\n<p>Noah looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Lily started crying.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stopped the recording.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA judge will understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah didn&#39;t react.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou edited it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark&#39;s smile faded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou removed what happened afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt matters very much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached into her briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>Then she produced Arthur&#39;s old metal thermos.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen that thermos every day for twenty years.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah unscrewed the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>A small recording device fell into her palm.<\/p>\n<p>Claire stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did that come from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur began recording threatening calls and unexpected visitors after someone tried to access his accounts again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah connected it to her laptop.<\/p>\n<p>The complete recording played.<\/p>\n<p>My shouting.<\/p>\n<p>Then my footsteps leaving.<\/p>\n<p>Then silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then my voice again.<\/p>\n<p>Softer.<\/p>\n<p>I had returned with a blanket and coffee.<\/p>\n<p>I heard myself apologize.<\/p>\n<p>I had forgotten that part.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s voice followed.<\/p>\n<p>He said I was angry because I had carried him longer than any man should have to.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said something that made Mark&#39;s face go rigid.<\/p>\n<p>Even when you hate me, you still come back with a blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah stopped the recording.<\/p>\n<p>Mark reached for the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn&#39;t over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n<p>She selected another audio file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe final recording was made the night before Arthur died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark froze.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s voice came through the speakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah, he came again.
