Dalton.<\/p>\n<p>Linda&#39;s pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave him Frank&#39;s name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I gave him a false name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou protected Frank?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why was Frank paid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Arthur found him anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda remembered Frank&#39;s recording.<\/p>\n<p>The money.<\/p>\n<p>The threats.<\/p>\n<p>The fear in his voice.<\/p>\n<p>Hale rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I could contain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hale&#39;s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur&#39;s signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked at the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hale answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe authorization for Richard Harper&#39;s murder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Linda could hear her own breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said there was no order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no written order that said those words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He tapped the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the instruction that made it possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda understood.<\/p>\n<p>The trust had built everything around plausible deniability.<\/p>\n<p>No one signed a paper saying murder.<\/p>\n<p>They signed papers creating debts, moving property, arranging payments, hiring intermediaries.<\/p>\n<p>The violence happened somewhere between the lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the original?\u201d Linda asked.<\/p>\n<p>Hale looked at the empty box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why come here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the person who does know is coming for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell turned toward the vault entrance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hale looked at Linda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor Hartwell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda&#39;s stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda reached for her phone.<\/p>\n<p>Before she could dial, it rang.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor&#39;s name appeared on the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Linda answered.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor&#39;s voice was weak but urgent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda, listen to me pale.<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich one of you is lying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither answered.<\/p>\n<p>Then the vault door behind Hale clicked shut.<\/p>\n<p>And from
