There was one main road, a grocery store with faded lettering above the entrance, a library occupying what looked like an old bank building, and rows of houses tucked behind tall fir trees. After the long drive from the East, Oregon felt almost deliberately quiet.

Linda parked across from the address Eleanor had written on a sheet of paper. For several seconds, neither she nor Russell moved.

The house was modest, painted a pale gray that had weathered around the window frames. A wind chime hung beneath the porch roof, turning slowly in the afternoon breeze. Nothing about it suggested a woman who had once been at the center of a chain of events that had ruined so many lives.

Russell stared through the windshield. “What if she doesn't want to see us?”

“Then we leave.”

“And if she does?”

Linda looked at the front door. “Then we listen.”

They crossed the lawn together. Linda noticed a pair of gardening gloves on the porch, still damp with soil. Someone had been working there recently. That ordinary detail steadied her more than she expected.

She knocked.

No answer.

Russell raised his hand to knock again, but footsteps sounded inside. A lock turned. The door opened only a few inches.

An older woman looked out.

Her hair was white, cut short around a narrow face. She wore a blue cardigan and held one hand against the edge of the door. Her eyes moved from Linda to Russell and stopped.

“Beverly's children,” she said.

Linda's breath caught.

“You knew our names?”

“I knew who would come eventually.”

The door opened wider.

Marianne Cole stepped aside.

Inside, the house smelled faintly of cedar and coffee. There were no photographs of the past on the walls, at least none that Linda could see.
