He wore a dark jacket and had one hand resting on the open driver&#39;s door. His face was partly turned away, but not enough to hide his features.<\/p>\n<p>Russell leaned over the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you had only seen him at Daniel&#39;s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did you see him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda&#39;s stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter my accident?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy was he there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was nineteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep saying that as though being nineteen erased what you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>She had promised herself that she would not let anger turn every conversation into an accusation. But there were moments when restraint felt dishonest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened at the hospital?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man came to Wayne&#39;s room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot mine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey argued.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn&#39;t hear everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you heard something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell stared at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Wayne had promised him money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda felt a cold sensation spread through her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the photograph again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Wayne didn&#39;t pay him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The envelope suddenly felt heavier.<\/p>\n<p>Linda opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a letter, several photocopied pages, and a small newspaper clipping.<\/p>\n<p>The clipping was decades old.<\/p>\n<p>The headline concerned a fatal crash outside Memphis.<\/p>\n<p>Linda read the date.<\/p>\n<p>Two days after her accident.<\/p>\n<p>The victim&#39;s name was Thomas Avery.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Russell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Thomas Avery?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda read the article.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Avery had been driving home after work when his vehicle left the road and struck a barrier. mattered.<\/p>\n<p>She did not want Linda to inherit her suspicions as though they were facts.<\/p>\n<p>She wanted her daughter to have evidence.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence stayed with Linda.<\/p>\n<p>For all the mistakes Mama had made, she had understood that truth required more than certainty.<\/p>\n<p>The next document was a bank record.<\/p>\n<p>It showed a payment made to Thomas Avery&#39;s widow.<\/p>\n<p>The payment came from Mercer Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>Linda looked at the date.<\/p>\n<p>Three days before Thomas died.<\/p>\n<p>Russell sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can&#39;t be coincidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Daniel pay his wife?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda read the amount.<\/p>\n<p>$8,000.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at the following page.<\/p>\n<p>Another payment.<\/p>\n<p>$8,000.<\/p>\n<p>After Thomas&#39;s death.<\/p>\n<p>The second payment had been made to an account under a different name.<\/p>\n<p>Linda recognized the surname.<\/p>\n<p>It belonged to the driver in the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Russell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man beside Wayne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank Dalton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name was written in the margin of Mama&#39;s letter.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Dalton.<\/p>\n<p>Linda stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>She suddenly remembered something.<\/p>\n<p>When she was seventeen, a man had visited her in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>She had never remembered his name.<\/p>\n<p>He had stood at the foot of her bed while Mama argued with Wayne ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed.<\/p>\n<p>The address was in Arkansas.<\/p>\n<p>Linda stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he still alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attorney had warned her that reopening an old case could uncover people she might not want to meet.<\/p>\n<p>Linda no longer had the luxury of deciding which truths were comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>They called the number listed beside the address.<\/p>\n<p>A woman answered.<\/p>\n<p>Linda introduced herself.<\/p>\n<p>There was silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then the woman said, \u201cI wondered when someone would call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda&#39;s heart began pounding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Rebecca Dalton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda looked at Russell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you related to Frank Dalton?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was his daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe died eleven years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda&#39;s grip tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he ever tell you about an accident in Memphis?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she said, \u201cHe told me about a girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he had been paid to lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWayne Harper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to go silent.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father carried that guilt until he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he leave anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda&#39;s breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA tape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said it was the only proof he had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda looked at Russell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca gave her an address.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said something that made Linda&#39;s stomach drop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father always said Wayne wasn&#39;t the only person who wanted you hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou must know something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was seventeen when he told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Wayne was angry with someone else.
