Wayne could manage it. When you turned eighteen, control was supposed to pass to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the forged signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone came to the bank with documents saying you had voluntarily transferred control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed suddenly too warm.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered my eighteenth birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Mama had baked a chocolate cake.<\/p>\n<p>She had given me a gold bracelet.<\/p>\n<p>She had hugged me and whispered that she was proud of me.<\/p>\n<p>I had remembered that birthday as one of the happiest days of my youth.<\/p>\n<p>Now I wasn&#39;t sure which Russell.<\/p>\n<p>She believed he would hurt him if she went to the police.<\/p>\n<p>She had convinced herself that protecting her son was the only way to keep the family alive.<\/p>\n<p>But Mama also wrote something else.<\/p>\n<p>Russell knew.<\/p>\n<p>He knew the money belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p>He knew Wayne was lying.<\/p>\n<p>And he still helped him.<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the glass door.<\/p>\n<p>Russell was sitting in the waiting area.<\/p>\n<p>He was pretending to look at his phone.<\/p>\n<p>But he wasn&#39;t reading anything.<\/p>\n<p>He was watching us.<\/p>\n<p>I
