His books were still arranged according to his habits. His office still smelled faintly of cedar and paper. The basement still held boxes he had labeled in a handwriting that became shakier toward the end. Even the kitchen drawer where he kept spare batteries contained the same mixture of batteries, receipts, rubber bands, and a screwdriver I had complained about for years.

Now every room carried a question.

What stays?

What goes?

What becomes something new?

I began with the guest rooms.

There were three.

One had always been Diane's room, although she had not slept there in years. Another had belonged to Ross. The third had been used mostly for visitors.

I stood in the hallway with Diane beside me.

“I think these should stay.”

She looked at the doors.

“All three?”

“All three.”

“For families?”

“For whoever needs them.”

She nodded.

“Dad would like that.”

“I don't know.”

She looked at me.

“You don't?”

“I don't want to keep doing things because your father would like them.”

Diane smiled.

“That might be the most honest thing you've said about him.”

I smiled back.

“I've spent enough time trying to guess what he wanted.”

Ross was in the basement with Michael, sorting documents.

He had changed in small ways.

He no longer walked into a room as though everything inside it might eventually belong to him.

He asked before moving things.

He kept a notebook.

He had found a legitimate job with a construction company and had started working mornings.

He was still uncomfortable talking about money.

That was probably healthy.

One afternoon, I found him sitting on the basement floor with three folders open around him.

“What are you doing?”

“Trying to understand Dad's grant system.”

“You don't have to.”

“I know.”

He looked at the papers.

“I want to.”

That answer pleased me more than I expected.

Michael had become a regular presence.

He knew the records better than anyone except Frank.

He understood the community trust.

He knew the names on the responsibility list.

He also knew when to stop talking.

That mattered.

The first family arrived on a rainy Tuesday.

A mother named Carla came with her teenage daughter.

They had been sleeping in a motel after a workplace injury left Carla without enough income to cover rent.

She stood in the doorway holding two plastic bags.

“I don't know how long we'll need the room.”

“As long as you need it,” I said.

She looked at me suspiciously.

“There isn't a fee?”

“No.”

“Nothing?”

“There are rules.”

Her shoulders tightened.

“Of course.”

“No drugs. surprised.

“Why would you do this?”

I almost said because my husband wanted it.

Instead, I said, “Because I can.”

That was the first time I understood what Frank had been trying to teach me.

Giving didn't always require a complicated explanation.

Sometimes a person needed a room.

You had a room.

You gave it.

That was enough.

The community center helped with Carla's daughter's school transportation.

The trust paid the first medical bill.

Ross helped repair the damaged back door.

Diane organized donated clothing.

Michael handled the paperwork.

Nobody was paid for pretending to be generous.

They simply worked.

For the first time, the house felt lighter.

Then Laura came.

She arrived in the late afternoon.

I watched from the window as the car stopped outside.

Laura sat inside for several minutes.

Finally, she opened the door.

She stood at the gate.

I walked out.

Neither of us knew what to say.

So I said the simplest thing.

“Come in.”

She looked at the house.

“I've seen it before.”

I here?”

“Once.”

“Why?”

“To see where you lived.”

I didn't know whether to be angry.

“You could have knocked.”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn't want to see you.”

I understood.

Laura walked beside me toward the house.

Diane saw her first.

She froze.

Laura smiled gently.

“Hello.”

Diane's eyes filled.

“I'm me.”

“That doesn't excuse it.”

“No.”

Laura looked at me.

“She's learning.”

Diane nodded.

Ross came from the basement.

He stopped when he saw Laura.

For a moment, the old tension returned.

Then Ross stepped forward.

“I'm Ross.”

Laura smiled.

“I know.”

He looked embarrassed.

“Right.”

Nobody laughed.

Then Laura did.

It broke the tension.

“I think we've all had enough awkward introductions.”

We laughed.

It was the first time Laura and my stepchildren stood together in the same room.

No one had planned it.

No letter had demanded it.

It simply happened.

That evening, Laura stayed for dinner.

She sat where Frank usually sat.

At first, I noticed.

Then I stopped caring.

She told stories about him that I had never heard.

She said he hated cold coffee.

I laughed.

“He drank cold coffee every morning.”

Laura shook her head.

“He hated it.”

“Then why did he drink it?”

“Because he was always distracted.”

That sounded exactly like him.

Diane asked what he was like when he was young.

Laura thought for a moment.

“Impatient.”

Ross laughed.

“That part survived.”

We talked until nearly midnight.

When Laura finally left, she stood at the front door.

“I was afraid this would hurt.”

“It did.”

She looked at me.

“I'm sorry.”

“Don't be.”

I touched her arm.

“It also helped.”

She nodded.

Then she left.

The next morning, I found something on the kitchen table.

A pink sticky note.

For one second, I thought my stomach had dropped.

Then I saw the handwriting.

Diane.

It said:

The room is ready for the next family.

I smiled.

I kept the note.

Not because it was pink.

Because for the first time, a pink note in my house did not mean someone was taking something from me.

It meant someone was helping build something.

That afternoon, Whit called.

“We need to meet.”

“About what?”

“The final business records.”

“I thought Arthur gave us first page.

The account had paid several people connected to Thomas's business.

Then Laura's father.

Then Evelyn.

Then someone named Daniel Mercer.

I stared.

Daniel had told us Frank took the larger contract and destroyed his family's business.

But these payments suggested something else.

Daniel had received money before the collapse.

I called him.

He answered after three rings.

“Eileen?”

“Did Frank's father ever pay your continued.

“Someone wanted Thomas out.”

“Why?”

“Because he was about to expose the ownership structure.”

I stood.

“What
