remained standing.

“Do you have the original contract?”

Victor looked at me.

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

Ross stepped forward.

“Then why did you keep it?”

Victor sighed.

“Because your husband's father asked me to.”

I felt the answer physically.

“What did he promise you?”

“Money.”

“Did you take it?”

“Yes.”

Diane looked shocked.

“How much?”

Victor gave her a tired look.

“Enough to keep my company alive.”

Ross shook his head.

“So he bought your silence.”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you agreed.”

“Yes.”

There was no defense in his voice.

Only exhaustion.

“Why tell us now?”

“Because Frank paid me back.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“He bought my company years later.”

Ross placed a large envelope on the table.

The original contract.

My hands shook.

Whit opened it carefully.

The paper was older than the copy.

The signatures did.”

I looked at Victor.

“Then why did Thomas lose everything?”

Victor leaned back.

“Because he never knew what had been changed.”

“Who changed it?”

Victor answered.

“Frank's father.”

“Alone?”

“No.”

I waited.

Victor looked at me.

“Frank helped him.”

My stomach dropped.

“No.”

“He was twenty-four.”

“You said he didn't know.”

“He knew enough.”

Lewis spoke.

“Victor.”

“I am telling the truth.”

Victor explained that Frank had discovered the altered contract after his father had already made the changes.

He had confronted him.

But instead of exposing him, Frank signed a second document acknowledging the altered terms.

“Why?”

“Because his father told him Thomas would lose everything if the fraud became public.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It did to a frightened young man.”

I looked at the contract.

Frank had chosen silence.

Again.

Victor continued.

“Thomas found out anyway.”

“The letter.”

“Yes.”

“He was going to expose them.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Victor looked down.

“I met him that night.”

I felt my breath stop.

“You were the last person to see him?”

“Yes.”

“What did you talk about?”

“The contract.”

“And?”

“He told me he was going to confront Frank.”

“Did you warn him?”

“I tried.”

“About what?”

Victor's voice lowered.

“Your husband's father had people watching him.”

The room went still.

Ross looked at Whit.

“Are you saying someone caused the accident?”

“No.”

Victor shook his head.

“I am saying I don't know.”

That distinction mattered.

“What happened after Thomas left?”

“I went home.”

“And the accident?”

“I heard about it the next morning.”

“Did you tell Frank?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

Victor's eyes closed.

“He said, ‘It's over.’”

I stared at him.

“He didn't ask what happened?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew.”

I felt angry.

Not at Victor.

At Frank.

At the young man he had been.

At the silence that had become a habit.

I looked at the original contract.

“And Michael?”

Victor's face softened.

“Frank tried to help him later.”

“I know.”

“But Michael didn't know why.”

“Frank never told him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he thought telling him would destroy whatever remained of his father's memory.”

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

Frank protecting people from truth.

Even when truth was the thing they needed.

Victor reached into the envelope.

There was another document.

“What is that?”

“The second agreement.”

Whit opened it.

Frank's signature was there.

Young.

Uneven.

Legal.

Binding.

I stared at it.

“He signed.”

“Yes.”

Diane whispered, “Dad.”

I felt no desire to defend him.

But neither could I condemn him as though he had been the same man at twenty-four that he had been at sixty-eight.

He had been afraid.

He had made a terrible choice.

Then he had spent forty years trying to live with it.

Victor looked at me.

“There is something else.”

I waited.

“Frank came to me five years ago.”

“What did he want?”

“The contract.”

“Why?”

“He wanted to return it to Thomas's family.”

“Why didn't he?”

“Because Michael refused.”

I looked at Lewis.

“That isn't what I was told.”

Lewis nodded slowly.

“Michael refused to receive it.”

“Why?”

“Because he didn't trust Frank.”

That hurt.

But it made sense.

Frank had spent years helping Michael anonymously.

How could Michael trust a man whose entire relationship with him was built around hidden truths?

Victor continued.

“Frank asked me to hold the contract until Michael was ready.”

“And now?”

“Now Frank is dead.”

He pushed the envelope toward me.

“It belongs to him.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Victor looked surprised.

“Not to me.”

I pushed it toward Lewis.

“Give it to Michael.”

Lewis nodded.

“He will receive it.”

Diane looked at me.

“Will that fix anything?”

“No.”

I said it gently.

“It will tell the truth.”

Ross sat down.

He looked exhausted.

“I think Dad spent his whole life trying to fix things without admitting he broke them.”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

“That's what I'm doing too.”

I knew what he meant.

The business.

The debts.

The trust.

The blue stickers.

He was beginning to see himself in his father.

That realization could either make him repeat the pattern or break it.

Victor stood.

Before leaving, he turned toward me.

“Your husband asked me to tell you one thing.”

I braced myself.

“He said that if you ever learned all of this, you would have every right to hate him.”

I swallowed.

“And?”

Victor smiled faintly.

“He said he hoped you would choose something harder.”

“What?”

“Remember him honestly.”

Victor left.

I stood by the table.

The original contract lay between us.

Diane touched my arm.

“What are you going to do?”

“I don't know.”

It was the truth.

For the first time since Frank died, I stopped trying to decide what he would have wanted.

I needed to decide what I wanted.

Then Lewis spoke.

“There is one final instruction regarding the house.”

I looked at him.

“Of course there is.”

He smiled slightly.

Frank had instructed Whit to give me the option to sell the house immediately, without interference from the trusts.

But there was a condition.

“What condition?”

Lewis handed me a final document.

I read it.

If Eileen chooses to sell, the proceeds belong entirely to her.

I exhaled.

That seemed simple.

Then I reached the last paragraph.

But before she decides, she should see what is beneath the house.

I looked up.

“What is beneath the house?”

Whit's face went pale.

“I knew there was a basement.”

“No,” Lewis said.

“Not the basement.”

He looked at me.

“Frank had a room built beneath the original foundation.”

I stared at him.

“A room?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Nineteen years ago.”

The year we married.

My stomach tightened.

“What is in it?”

Lewis looked toward the floor.

“Everything Frank didn't trust himself to destroy.”

<a
