He was perhaps in his late fifties, with silver at his temples and a dark coat still buttoned despite the warmth inside the house. He carried no briefcase and wore no expression of surprise.<\/p>\n<p>He looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Coleman?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Lewis Harper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross moved first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis did not answer him.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he looked at Whit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assume the documents were opened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were,\u201d Whit said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the children know about the trusts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis exhaled slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Frank was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands tightened around the edge of the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight about what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis finally looked at me again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said they would think the money was the story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Ross looked irritated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that supposed to mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis reached inside his coat and removed a thin folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worked with your father for many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs his financial adviser?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmong other things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit stepped aside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLewis was one of the people Frank instructed me to coordinate with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is in it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccount records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese concern accounts that were not part of the estate documents you have already seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross immediately stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much money are we talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is exactly the question Frank told me not to answer first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross scoffed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis opened the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father was very specific about what should happen if either of you attempted to access his accounts before the estate meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttempted?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis nodded.<\/p>\n<p>He removed two printed pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were several attempts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t access anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t say you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said attempts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane glanced at Ross.<\/p>\n<p>He avoided her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I felt a strange coldness move through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis looked down at the records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the week before the funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn&#39;t me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane&#39;s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis placed the pages on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne request came from a device associated with Ross\u2019s usual banking information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to find out whether Dad had changed anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was his son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis&#39;s voice remained calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father knew you were curious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurious?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross&#39;s temper rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou make it sound like I was stealing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am describing what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit lifted one of the pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank instructed Lewis to preserve these records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross looked at Whit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew there had been activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you didn&#39;t tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t required to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I did not recognize the anger in his face anymore.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#39;t only anger at me.<\/p>\n<p>It was fear.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA beneficiary change was attempted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat beneficiary?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour husband&#39;s life insurance account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart seemed to stop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank had placed additional authorization requirements on the account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe request was blocked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho tried?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis looked toward Whit.<\/p>\n<p>Whit answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe record does not identify a person conclusively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross immediately looked at Diane.<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t look at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t say anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their argument started softly, then stopped when Lewis closed the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Frank&#39;s children had spent years accusing each other of taking sides.<\/p>\n<p>Now the accusations were turning toward money.<\/p>\n<p>I suddenly understood something Frank had understood long before me.<\/p>\n<p>Money did not create the cracks in this family.<\/p>\n<p>It only showed where they already were.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank asked me to protect certain accounts until after his final instructions were delivered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he was afraid someone would try to move money before understanding the conditions attached to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross looked at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Diane whispered, \u201cDid Dad think we would do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis answered honestly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thought you might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words hurt more than they should have.<\/p>\n<p>Frank had known his children.<\/p>\n<p>But he had also known that they were capable of disappointing him.<\/p>\n<p>Whit opened the folder containing the estate documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLewis, there is one more matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He removed a sealed envelope.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written on it.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Frank&#39;s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>I touched the paper without opening it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour husband&#39;s instructions concerning the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit watched me carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house was placed in a protected structure before Frank died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Whit said gently. \u201cYou know that it is yours. You don&#39;t yet know why he structured it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a single page.<\/p>\n<p>Frank explained that he had not wanted me to become dependent on anyone after his death. He had watched too many widows lose control of their homes because family members convinced them that selling was practical, fair, or necessary.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted me to have choices.<\/p>\n<p>But then came the sentence that made me stop.<\/p>\n<p>He had also protected the house because he knew Diane and Ross might believe that grief gave them the right to claim pieces of it.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The sticky notes suddenly seemed uglier than they had that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Pink.<\/p>\n<p>Blue.<\/p>\n<p>Little squares marking objects as though Frank&#39;s death had turned our home into a store.<\/p>\n<p>Diane saw the expression on my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then I handed her the page.<\/p>\n<p>She read it.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>Ross refused to look.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis watched both of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank did not want to punish you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sure feels like punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cPunishment ends when someone suffers enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father wanted you to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane whispered, \u201cLearn what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat love and entitlement are not the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, the only sound was the clock.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ross spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we follow the instructions your father left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if I don&#39;t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit&#39;s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the trust does not distribute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross sat down.<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEileen\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know how to fix this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the first honest thing she had said to me all day.<\/p>\n<p>I sat across from her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can&#39;t fix nineteen years in one afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you can stop making it worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis gathered the documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one more thing Frank wanted done tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted all three of you to return to the cottage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis glanced at Whit.<\/p>\n<p>Whit answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the cottage contains something Frank believed you would eventually need to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>The old promise.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank left a locked room there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA locked room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he gave me instructions that nobody should enter it alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the brass key in my pocket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis&#39;s expression became serious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the room contains the reason he kept Laura&#39;s existence secret from all of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>The house seemed suddenly too small.<\/p>\n<p>Diane rose beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Ross remained seated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad always has another secret,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the last one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>He corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last one he wanted you to discover this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart began pounding.<\/p>\n<p>I knew then that whatever waited inside that cottage would not simply explain Frank&#39;s past.<\/p>\n<p>It would explain the choices he had made during our marriage.<\/p>\n<p>And I wasn&#39;t sure I was ready to hear the truth.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=7340\">Click here to continue reading: PART 14: The Locked Room at Frank\u2019s Cottage Held a Record of Nineteen Years, and One Ordinary Photograph Revealed Why He Had Kept It From Me<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The room went silent after Ross finished reading the line from Frank\u2019s letter. \u201cAnd the man standing quietly by the front door is not one of the funeral guests\u2026\u201d Everyone &hellip;
