Frank?”

“He was told the same thing.”

I sat very still.

Suddenly Frank's obsession with records made sense.

The black notebook.

The trusts.

The documents.

The cottage.

He had spent decades trying to correct things after they had already become buried under lies.

“How did he discover you?”

Anna explained that when she was twenty-six, she found a box hidden among Marianne's belongings.

Inside were letters between Marianne and Laura.

The letters mentioned a baby.

But they never used Anna's name.

There was only a date.

The same date on the photograph Frank had kept.

Anna traced the records through an old hospital archive.

That led to a patient transfer.

Then another.

Eventually, she found Frank.

“Why did you contact him?”

“Because I wanted to him.”

Diane smiled sadly through her tears.

“That sounds like something Dad needed to hear.”

Anna nodded.

“He said you would couldn't tell you everything.”

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Both feelings came at once.

Anna looked at the envelope.

“There is another nearby.”

“Why would that matter now?”

“Because the records were altered deliberately.”

Whit, who had remained unusually quiet, finally spoke.

“If that can be proven, it could affect the estate.”

Anna looked at him.

“I don't care about the money.”

Whit again.”

We returned before sunset.

Laura was waiting on the porch.

When she saw Anna step from the car, she stopped breathing.

For a moment, neither woman moved.

Laura's hand rose to her mouth.

Anna took one step forward.

“Mom?”

Laura broke.

She walked toward her slowly.

Anna met her halfway.

They embraced.

No one spoke.

I looked away.

Some moments should not belong to witnesses.

But then Laura pulled back and touched Anna's face.

“You're alive.”

Anna nodded.

“I am.”

“I thought…”

“I know.”

Laura cried against her shoulder.

“I thought I lost you.”

Anna held her.

“You didn't.”

Michael stood beside me.

His eyes were wet.

Diane was crying openly.

Ross had turned away.

I understood why.

Some grief was too intimate to watch.

After several minutes, Laura looked at me.

“Frank found her.”

“Yes.”

“And he brought her to you.”

“He left instructions.”

Laura nodded.

“He always did.”

Inside the cottage, Laura and Anna sat together.

They spoke quietly for almost an hour.

I listened only when they invited me into the conversation.

Anna told Laura about her childhood.

Marianne had raised her lovingly.

She had never told Anna the full truth because she feared their father.

But before Marianne died, she had left everything she knew.

Laura told Anna about the hospital.

About Frank.

About the years afterward.

At one point, Anna asked the question I had feared.

“Why didn't you look for me?”

Laura looked devastated.

“I did.”

“For how long?”

“Until I had nothing left.”

Anna nodded.

“I believe you.”

Those three words seemed to give Laura permission to breathe again.

Later, Michael and I returned to the hidden room.

He closed the door.

“There is something I should have told you.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“Frank knew your mother-in-law's name.”

I frowned.

“My mother?”

“No.”

“Then whose?”

“Marianne's.”

I remembered the birth certificate.

The name had been written there.

I had assumed it was simply another record.

But Michael explained that Frank had discovered Marianne's involvement long before he found Anna.

He had searched for her.

She refused to speak with him.

Then, three years before his death, she died.

After her death, Anna found the box.

That was when Frank finally learned the truth.

“Why didn't he tell Laura?”

“Because Laura had spent twenty-seven years believing Anna was dead.”

“And he didn't know whether Anna wanted contact.”

“Exactly.”

I looked at the boxes.

“He was protecting her.”

“He was trying to.”

I opened the unmarked box again.

Under the photographs was a thin folder.

Inside were copies of hospital records.

Transfer forms.

Handwritten notes.

A photograph of a newborn.

And one document that made me stop.

A custody authorization.

It had been signed by Laura's father.

The document transferred temporary guardianship of the baby to Marianne.

But the date was wrong.

It had been signed two days before Anna was born.

I stared at it.

“That means he planned it.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

The implication was terrible.

This hadn't been an impulsive decision after the birth.

It had been arranged.

Someone had known Laura would give birth.

Someone had prepared for the child to disappear.

I turned the page.

There was another name.

The doctor who had signed the transfer.

Michael read it.

“Dr. Samuel Reed.”

“Who was he?”

Michael shook his head.

“I don't know.”

I looked at the next page.

There was an address.

Not the doctor's office.

A storage facility.

Frank had circled it in red.

Beside it he had written:

ASK WHY HE KEPT THE ORIGINALS.

My heart began pounding.

“Michael.”

He read the note.

“He knew.”

“About the records?”

“Apparently.”

“Did he ever go there?”

“I don't know.”

I looked at the date.

The note had been written six months before Frank died.

He had been searching until the end.

Then I noticed another line.

Frank had written:

If I cannot finish this, Eileen will know where to look.

I stared at the words.

“Why me?”

Michael answered softly.

“Because he trusted you to finish what he couldn't.”

I looked at the door.

Outside, Laura and Anna were talking.

Diane and Ross were helping prepare dinner.

For the first time since Frank's death, the family around me did not feel divided by blood.

It felt connected by truth.

But there was still a missing piece.

Who had altered the records?

Who had helped Laura's father?

And why had Frank believed the evidence was still hidden?

I folded the document.

“We're going to the storage facility.”

Michael nodded.

“Tomorrow.”

“No.”

He
