why did you say you've been waiting?”

Michael was silent for several seconds.

“Because my mother died believing she had failed Frank.”

I remembered the his head.

“No. Dad always knew what he was doing.”

I thought about that.

Frank had certainly planned things carefully.

But planning did not mean stories.

Gray siding.

White porch.

A child's bicycle leaned against the railing.

I stared at it.

A bicycle.

Something about that small object there.

She looked to be in her late twenties.

Dark hair.

Green eyes.

I stopped breathing.

Frank's eyes.

Not similar.

The same.

Michael froze beside me.

The woman looked at all of us.

Then at Michael.

Her expression changed.

“Mr. Grant?”

Michael could barely speak.

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“Are you Eileen?”

My heart slammed against my ribs.

“How do you know my name?”

She stepped back.

“Because Frank told me.”

I heard Diane inhale sharply.

The woman opened the door wider.

“Please come inside.”

None of us moved.

She looked frightened now.

But determined.

“I've been waiting.”

Michael finally stepped through the doorway.

I followed.

The house smelled of cinnamon and laundry detergent.

It was ordinary.

Painfully ordinary.

Family photographs covered the walls.

A wedding picture.

A graduation.

A little girl on a swing.

A man holding a newborn.

I looked away.

The woman noticed.

“My name is Anna.”

The room seemed to lose all sound.

Diane covered her mouth.

Ross whispered something I couldn't hear.

Michael stared at her.

“Anna what?”

She hesitated.

“Anna Bennett.”

I looked at the woman.

Bennett.

Laura's surname.

My hands began trembling.

“Your mother?”

Anna looked at me.

“Laura.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Anna asked the question that made everything real.

“Is she alive?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled instantly.

“She never died?”

“No.”

Anna covered her face.

A sob escaped her.

Michael stepped toward her.

“Anna, do you know who your father was?”

She looked at him.

“Frank Coleman.”

Diane began crying.

Ross turned away.

I could not move.

The name sounded different coming from her.

Not from a document.

Not from a story.

From the woman herself.

“How did you find Frank?” I asked.

Anna wiped her eyes.

“I didn't.”

She shook her head.

“He found me.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

I looked at Michael.

Three years.

The same period when Frank had last spoken to Laura.

“What happened?”

Anna invited us into the sitting room.

She sat on the edge of a chair.

Frank had apparently found her through records connected to her mother's family.

But when he first contacted her, he did not tell her he was her father.

“He called himself Frank Coleman.”

“Did you meet him?”

“Yes.”

“How many times?”

“Four.”

I felt something twist inside me.

Frank had never mentioned those meetings.

Not once.

Anna looked at me.

“He talked about you.”

“What did he say?”

“That you were kind.”

I looked down.

“He said you saved his life.”

My throat tightened.

“How?”

“He said after finding me, he was terrified of losing everything.”

“What did he mean?”

Anna shook her head.

“He didn't explain.”

Michael leaned forward.

“Did he tell you about Laura?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“That she had believed I died.”

Diane whispered, “She did.”

Anna nodded.

“He told me the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That I was taken from her.”

The room became silent.

Anna explained that the records surrounding her birth had been deliberately altered.

She had been raised by Laura's sister, Marianne.

But Marianne had died when Anna was young.

Before her death, Marianne had left Anna a box.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

And one photograph of a young Frank holding a newborn baby.

Anna had recognized him.

She had spent years searching.

Then she found an old trust document connected to Frank's company.

That was how she located him.

“He knew who I was when I contacted him,” Anna said.

“Then why didn't he tell you?”

“Because I wasn't ready.”

“For what?”

“To meet my mother.”

I understood.

Anna had spent her life believing her mother had abandoned her.

Laura had spent hers believing her daughter was dead.

Two people separated by a lie.

Frank had found both.

But he had not known how to put them back together.

“What did he ask you to do?” I said.

Anna looked at me.

“He asked me to wait.”

“For what?”

“For you.”

My heart stopped.

“Me?”

She nodded.

“He said you would eventually come.”

“Why?”

“He said the truth would be too heavy if he gave it to you all at once.”

I sat down.

That sounded like Frank.

Always another layer.

Always another reason.

Always believing that timing could somehow soften pain.

Anna looked at Michael.

“He also asked you to protect the trust.”

Michael nodded.

“Which trust?”

“The one for my mother.”

I frowned.

“Why would Laura need a trust if Frank was already supporting her?”

Anna looked at me.

“Because he knew she would refuse his money if she knew it came from him.”

“That sounds like her.”

Anna smiled faintly.

“He said the same thing.”

Ross suddenly asked, “Did he love your mother?”

Anna looked at him.

“Yes.”

Ross lowered his eyes.

“But he loved Eileen too.”

I looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because he told me.”

My eyes filled.

Anna continued.

“He said Laura was his first love.”

She paused.

“But you were his home.”

Diane started crying.

I reached for her hand.

She took it.

For the first time, I realized that Anna had inherited something from Frank besides his eyes.

She knew how to say difficult things without cruelty.

Then she looked at me.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

Anna stood.

She walked to a cabinet.

From inside, she removed a sealed envelope.

She handed it to me.

Frank's handwriting was on the front.

Eileen.

I stared at it.

“Where did you get this?”

“He gave it to me six months ago.”

My hands shook.

“He told me not to open it.”

“Why?”

“Because it wasn't mine.”

I looked at Michael.

He seemed as stunned as I was.

“What does it say?”

Anna shook her head.

“I don't know.”

I broke the seal.

The letter was short.

Frank wrote that if I was reading it, then Anna had finally told me who she was.

He apologized for waiting.

He explained that he had discovered the truth about Anna only after years of searching.

But he had not immediately introduced her to Laura because he wanted Anna to choose.

He did not want another person making that choice for her.

Then came the part that frightened me.

Frank wrote that there was a reason he had connected Anna's future to the cottage.

Not because Laura needed a place to live.

Because the cottage contained the evidence that would prove what happened to Anna.

I looked up.

“The cottage.”

Anna nodded.

“He told me never to let anyone sell it.”

“Why?”

“Because the truth is still there.”

Michael stood.

“What truth?”

Anna looked at him.

“The truth about who took me.”

The room went silent.

I felt cold.

“Your grandfather?”

Anna nodded.

“My grandfather didn't want Frank to marry my mother.”

“That much we know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“He didn't only separate them.”

She looked at the letter in my hands.

“He made sure Frank would spend the rest of his life believing his daughter was dead.”

Ross stared at her.

“How?”

Anna's voice dropped.

“He lied about the death certificate.”

I looked at Michael.

“What does that mean?”

Anna answered.

“There was never a death certificate.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Anna Revealed That the Death of Frank’s Daughter Had
