hallway.

“Michael?”

He came in immediately.

“What happened?”

I held up the certificate.

His face changed.

“Where did you find that?”

“On Frank's desk.”

He took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at me.

“I didn't know about this.”

“You didn't?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

He read the name again.

“I don't know.”

Diane appeared behind him.

“What is it?”

I turned the certificate around.

She read it.

Her expression changed.

“That's not mistake.”

“It isn't.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Frank kept it.”

Michael nodded.

“There may be an explanation.”

I looked at him.

“Then explain it.”

He couldn't.

That frightened me more than the document itself.

Whit entered the the estate documents.”

“Then why was it on Frank's desk?”

“I don't know.”

I looked at the photograph.

Frank.

Laura.

Anna.

If the certificate was genuine, something about the story we had just heard was incomplete.

I walked back to the back.”

“Where?”

“The cottage.”

Diane looked surprised.

“We were just there.”

“I know.”

“But why?”

“Because Laura deserves to see this.”

Michael hesitated.

Whit stopped him.

“Go.”

The drive back was silent.

When we reached the cottage, Laura was sitting near the window.

She looked tired.

But when she saw me, she smiled.

“You came back.”

I sat across from her.

“I found something.”

Her smile disappeared.

“What?”

I placed the certificate on the table.

Laura stared at it.

Her face went completely white.

She reached for the paper.

Her hands shook.

“No.”

I said nothing.

She read the name.

Then closed her eyes.

“I thought he destroyed this.”

My heart stopped.

“You knew?”

Laura opened her eyes.

“Yes.”

“What is this?”

She looked at Michael.

Then at me.

“I never wanted Frank to tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because it would destroy everything.”

I felt anger rising.

“Everything is already destroyed.”

Laura shook her head.

“No.”

She touched the certificate.

“You don't understand.”

“Then help me understand.”

She looked toward the window.

For a long time, she said nothing.

Finally she whispered the woman's name.

“Marianne.”

I didn't recognize it.

“Who was she?”

Laura swallowed.

“Frank's wife before you.”

I froze.

“What?”

Diane stepped forward.

“That isn't possible.”

Laura looked at her.

“Frank was never married to Marianne.”

“Then what do you mean?”

Laura's eyes filled with tears.

“Marianne was my sister.”

The room went silent.

I looked at the certificate.

The pieces refused to fit.

“Your sister?”

“Yes.”

“Then why is she listed as Anna's mother?”

Laura looked at the floor.

“Because she was.”

I stared at her.

“But you told us Anna was your child.”

“She was.”

“Both?”

Laura nodded.

“She was my baby.”

“Then why would your sister be listed as the mother?”

Laura's voice broke.

“Because my father forced us to change the record.”

I felt dizzy.

“Why?”

“He was trying to protect the family.”

“From what?”

Laura looked at Michael.

He seemed as confused as I was.

Then she said the sentence that changed everything.

“Anna was born after I disappeared.”

I stared at her.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does if you know where I went.”

She told us that after Anna's birth, her father had taken Laura away.

But Laura had not been allowed to take the baby.

Marianne had been told to claim the child.

Frank had been told the baby had died.

I looked at Michael.

He was pale.

“Frank believed Anna died?”

“Yes.”

Laura's eyes filled.

“He believed that for twenty-seven years.”

My throat tightened.

“Then what happened to Anna?”

Laura looked directly at me.

“I don't know.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Diane whispered, “She disappeared?”

Laura nodded.

“My father told me she died.”

“And you believed him?”

“I was nineteen.”

She closed her eyes.

“I believed everyone.”

Ross looked at the certificate.

“Then why did Frank have this?”

Laura shook her head.

“He found it.”

“When?”

“Years later.”

“Why didn't he tell you?”

“Because by then, he was afraid the truth would destroy the life Anna might have.”

I stared at her.

“What life?”

Laura's voice dropped.

“The life of the woman who was raised as someone else.”

I couldn't breathe.

Michael stepped forward.

“Laura, are you saying Anna survived?”

Laura looked at him.

“I don't know.”

“But Frank believed she might have.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the certificate again.

A child believed dead.

A missing woman.

A hidden cottage.

A secret kept for nineteen years.

Suddenly the entire story seemed larger than any of us had imagined.

“Did Frank find her?”

Laura shook her head.

“He found a name.”

“What name?”

She looked at me.

“Evelyn Grant.”

Michael went completely still.

“What?”

Laura looked at him.

“That's why Frank asked you to help him.”

Michael's face drained of color.

“My mother?”

Laura nodded.

“Frank believed your mother knew where Anna went.”

Michael stepped backward.

“That can't be.”

“Why?”

“My mother died twenty years ago.”

Laura's eyes filled.

“She left Frank a letter.”

Michael looked at me.

“A letter?”

Laura nodded.

“He kept it in the cottage.”

I looked around.

“Where?”

Laura pointed toward the old cabinet.

“Behind the bottom drawer.”

Michael crossed the room.

He pulled the drawer out.

Nothing.

Then he removed the wooden backing.

A small envelope fell behind it.

Michael picked it up.

His hands were shaking.

The handwriting on the front was old.

Frank.

He opened it.

Inside was a single sheet.

He read silently.

Then his knees nearly gave way.

“What does it say?” I asked.

He looked at me.

His eyes were wet.

“My mother knew.”

“Knew what?”

“Where Anna was.”

Diane whispered, “Where?”

Michael looked down at the letter.

Then back at me.

“She wasn't dead.”

Nobody moved.

Outside, the wind pushed against the windows.

The cottage creaked.

Laura covered her mouth.

I stared at Michael.

“Where is she?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“Then what did the letter say?”

Michael looked at the final line.

His expression changed from grief to disbelief.

He handed the paper to me.

I read the sentence.

Frank had written that he had spent nineteen years searching for a woman who might never know who she really was.

And beneath it was an address.

Not a hospital.

Not a cemetery.

Not a nursing home.

A house.

Less than thirty miles from ours.

Diane looked at me.

“Eileen…”

I folded the letter.

My heart was pounding.

Ross stood.

“We have to go.”

I looked at Laura.

She was crying silently.

For twenty-seven years, she had believed her daughter was dead.

For twenty-seven years, Frank had carried the same belief.

Until he found a clue.

Until he began searching.

Until he created the cottage.

Until he left the trail for me.

I understood now why Frank had said I would one day need to know what happened there.

The cottage wasn't only about Laura.

It wasn't only about his first love.

It was where he had hidden the beginning of a search.

A search he had never finished.

Michael picked up his coat.

“I'll drive.”

I looked at the address again.

Then at the photograph of Frank and Laura.

And finally at the brass key in my hand.

For the first time since Frank died, I felt something stronger than grief.

Hope.

But as we reached the door, Laura called my name.

I turned.

She was standing beside the table.

“There is one thing you need to know before you go.”

“What?”

Laura looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Frank didn't find that address.”

I frowned.

“Then who did?”

She shook her head.

“Anna did.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Anna’s Name
