Whit sat beside him with the folders balanced on his knees. Diane and Ross sat in the back with me, separated by the quiet that had grown between them after Frank's letters were read.

Outside the windows, the town slowly disappeared.

The streets became narrower. Houses gave way to fields, then trees. Evening light stretched across the road in long bands of gold and shadow.

I kept one hand in my coat pocket.

My fingers touched the brass key.

It was heavier than it looked.

Every few minutes, I found myself wondering what Frank had wanted me to discover there.

The cottage had been part of our lives without my knowing it.

That thought bothered me more than Laura herself.

I had trusted Frank.

Not blindly.

But completely.

And now every memory seemed to contain a second meaning I had never noticed.

Michael turned onto a gravel road.

“This is it.”

The cottage appeared between two rows of old maple trees.

It was smaller than I remembered from the photograph Frank had once shown me.

White siding.

Green shutters.

A narrow porch.

Smoke curled from the chimney.

Someone was home.

I felt my chest tighten.

Michael parked beside the house.

Nobody moved.

Then he turned around.

“Before we go inside, there's something you should know.”

I looked at him.

“Laura doesn't know we're coming.”

Diane frowned.

“Why not?”

“Because Frank never told her he had died.”

My breath caught.

“What?”

Michael nodded.

“He instructed the people who handled her care not to tell her until he was certain everything would continue without him.”

“But she has a right to know.”

“She does.”

“Then why?”

“Because Frank was afraid the news would make her believe she had lost the last person responsible for her.”

I stared at the cottage.

“Was he still visiting her?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“She stopped allowing him inside years ago.”

“Then how did he know what she needed?”

Michael looked at the house.

“He had people checking on her.”

I closed my eyes.

That sounded like Frank.

Even when he could not fix something himself, he found a way to keep it from breaking.

We got out of the car.

The air smelled of damp leaves and wood smoke.

Michael walked to the porch.

I followed.

Before he could knock, the door opened.

An older woman stood there.

She was thin, almost fragile, with silver hair pulled into a loose braid.

Her eyes moved over Michael.

Then Whit.

Then Diane.

Then Ross.

Finally they stopped on me.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered my name.

“Eileen?”

My heart stopped.

I had never met her.

“How do you know me?”

Laura gripped the doorframe.

“Frank talked about you.”

I couldn't speak.

She smiled faintly.

“He said you would come one day.”

Michael lowered his eyes.

I turned toward him.

“You knew.”

“I knew Frank expected this.”

Laura stepped aside.

“Come in.”

The cottage was warm.

There were books everywhere.

A small radio played softly near the kitchen.

Photographs covered one wall.

I stopped when I saw one of them.

It was Frank.

Not young.

Not old.

Somewhere in between.

He was standing on the porch of the cottage holding a bag of groceries.

He was looking toward the camera with the same expression he had worn when he thought I wasn't watching.

I touched the frame.

“How long ago?”

Laura answered.

“Eight years.”

“Why did he come here?”

“To fix the roof.”

I turned.

“He repaired the roof himself?”

Laura smiled.

“He tried.”

Michael almost laughed.

“He fell off the ladder.”

I stared at him.

“He what?”

“Nothing serious.”

Laura's smile widened.

“He broke a flowerpot.”

That was the first time anyone had laughed since Frank's funeral.

It was small.

Almost inappropriate.

But it made the room feel human again.

Laura motioned toward the sofa.

“Sit.”

We did.

She lowered herself into a chair near the window.

Her hands trembled slightly.

Diane watched her.

“Did you know Dad was married?”

Laura looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Did you know about us?”

“Yes.”

Ross looked surprised.

“How?”

Laura glanced at Michael.

“Frank told me.”

“Everything?”

“No.”

She smiled sadly.

“Frank never told anyone everything.”

I felt something in my chest loosen.

That sounded exactly like him.

Laura looked at me.

“He loved you.”

I lowered my eyes.

“I know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don't.”

I looked back at her.

“He was terrified of losing you.”

The room became silent.

Laura continued.

“He believed loving me and loving you were two different things.”

“How?”

“He loved me because I was part of his past.”

Her fingers tightened around the armrest.

“He loved you because you became his life.”

I felt tears burning behind my eyes.

Diane looked down.

Laura noticed.

“You are Diane.”

Diane nodded.

“Frank was proud of you.”

Diane's face crumpled.

“I don't deserve that.”

Laura looked at her for a long moment.

“Then become someone who does.”

Diane began crying.

Ross stared at the floor.

Laura turned toward him.

“And you are Ross.”

“Yes.”

“Your father worried about you.”

Ross swallowed.

“He did?”

“Constantly.”

“He didn't trust me.”

Laura smiled.

“He trusted you enough to leave you a path back.”

Ross looked away.

Michael quietly placed a folder on the table.

“Laura, there are some things we need to explain.”

She shook her head.

“Not yet.”

Michael stopped.

Laura looked at me.

“First, I need to tell Eileen why Frank bought this place.”

I leaned forward.

She pointed toward a narrow hallway.

“At the end of that hall is a room Frank never let me enter.”

“Why?”

“Because he said it belonged to the future.”

I frowned.

“What is inside?”

“I don't know.”

Michael looked at Whit.

Whit seemed surprised.

“Frank never told you?”

“No.”

Laura looked at me.

“He told me only that if Eileen ever came here, I should give her the key.”

My stomach tightened.

“Another key?”

Laura nodded.

She reached beneath a cushion and pulled out a small wooden box.

She opened it.

Inside was a silver key.

I took it.

It was cold.

“What does it open?”

“The room.”

I stood.

The hallway suddenly seemed much longer than it had before.

I walked slowly.

Behind me, I heard Diane whisper my name.

I kept going.

At the end of the hallway was a plain wooden door.

No lock was visible.

I inserted the silver key into a small brass opening hidden beneath the handle.

It turned.

The door opened.

And I stopped breathing.

The room was filled with boxes.

Dozens of them.

Each one labeled in Frank's handwriting.

Some had dates.

Some had names.

One had mine.

I stepped inside.

Michael appeared behind me.

“Frank started preparing this room almost twenty years ago.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

He didn't answer.

Because Laura did.

“He knew one day you would need the truth.”
