The only sound in the room was the faint ticking of my mother&#39;s clock.<\/p>\n<p>Diane folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho exactly are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Michael Grant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what did my father want with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael glanced at me before answering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father asked me to deliver several documents after the funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you a lawyer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m not the attorney handling the estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael&#39;s expression remained calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Frank wanted me here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer irritated Ross.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep saying that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s not an explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Michael said. \u201cIt&#39;s the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit arrived ten minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>He was Frank&#39;s attorney, and I had known him for almost as long as I had known Frank. He carried a brown leather folder under one arm and wore the tired expression of a man who had spent the morning at a funeral and the afternoon preparing for an argument.<\/p>\n<p>When he saw Michael, he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly on time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou two know each other?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit placed the folder on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ve met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s reassuring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the room.<\/p>\n<p>At the guests.<\/p>\n<p>At the furniture.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the stickers.<\/p>\n<p>His eyebrows rose slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are those?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane answered before I could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLabels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>He turned back to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLabels for what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the things Dad wanted us to have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit slowly removed his glasses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Frank tell you that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told us we could have certain things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Whit put his glasses back on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank anticipated this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence changed the room.<\/p>\n<p>Ross frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnticipated what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit opened his folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour behavior this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re saying Dad knew we&#39;d be here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew you would come home after the funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course we would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also knew you might begin deciding which belongings belonged to whom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross glanced at the television.<\/p>\n<p>Whit followed his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at the measuring marks on Ross&#39;s phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently he was correct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I felt a strange pressure behind my ribs.<\/p>\n<p>Frank had known.<\/p>\n<p>The thought should have comforted me.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it made me wonder how much he had planned without telling me.<\/p>\n<p>Whit removed a sealed envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was prepared for Diane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane did not take it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t read her expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he leave me a letter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he knew there were things you would need to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took it.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers were unsteady.<\/p>\n<p>Ross immediately asked, \u201cWhat about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have one too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He held out his hand.<\/p>\n<p>Whit gave him another envelope.<\/p>\n<p>I watched both of them.<\/p>\n<p>Frank had spent weeks preparing for this.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe months.<\/p>\n<p>I suddenly remembered the nights he had stayed awake in his study long after I went to bed. I had assumed he was working.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he had been writing.<\/p>\n<p>Diane turned the envelope over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is mine sealed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Frank requested that you open it here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he specifically wanted the people at the funeral present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross looked angry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit&#39;s eyes settled on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father didn&#39;t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross ripped his envelope open.<\/p>\n<p>Diane flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a folded sheet of paper.<\/p>\n<p>Ross scanned it.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does yours say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>She opened hers.<\/p>\n<p>I watched her eyes move across the page.<\/p>\n<p>Then she stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit remained silent.<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Her face had lost some of its color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Dad tell you before he died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question hit me unexpectedly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust answer me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you. He was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>His hand.<\/p>\n<p>His whisper.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#39;t fight them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing about the will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked back at her letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me not to fight you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross gave a bitter laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also told me to trust him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither of them answered.<\/p>\n<p>Diane slowly unfolded the rest of her letter.<\/p>\n<p>She began reading silently.<\/p>\n<p>Then her mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d Ross asked.<\/p>\n<p>She ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved again.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the stickers on the furniture.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward the pink note on the lamp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew I&#39;d do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross snatched his own letter from his lap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does yours say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Michael stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should read it completely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your father wrote it for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Then she began reading aloud.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was quiet at first.<\/p>\n<p>The letter told her that Frank knew she was angry with him. It reminded her that she had never accepted his marriage to me. It acknowledged that she believed I had taken a place that belonged to her mother.<\/p>\n<p>Diane stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes were wet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t need this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit said gently, \u201cKeep reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came here for my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit looked at the stickers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You came here for what you thought he left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her head snapped up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father knew you might say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Ross stared.<\/p>\n<p>Whit continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father asked me to make sure this conversation happened before anyone removed anything from this house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross&#39;s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you threatening me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael opened the briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>He removed a second folder.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Then a small black notebook.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>My breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>Frank had kept that notebook in the bottom drawer of his desk.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen him use it for years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank&#39;s records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecords of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross went still.<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Michael opened the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour husband kept track of every significant financial request made by people close to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he wanted to remember what he gave, what he loaned, and what was promised in return.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re not going through my father&#39;s private papers in front of everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked at Whit.<\/p>\n<p>Whit nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank authorized it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Michael turned several pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s a lot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked at Ross.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want me to continue?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked at Diane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr should we begin with the letters?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane wiped her cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinish it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael turned the notebook toward them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He read the first entry concerning Ross.<\/p>\n<p>It was for money used to expand a business.<\/p>\n<p>Ross immediately denied that it had been a loan.<\/p>\n<p>Michael turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>Frank&#39;s handwriting recorded it as a loan.<\/p>\n<p>The promised repayment date had passed years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>No repayment had been made.<\/p>\n<p>Another entry followed.<\/p>\n<p>Money for a truck.<\/p>\n<p>Then credit card debt.<\/p>\n<p>Then another payment.<\/p>\n<p>With each page, Ross became more uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Dad never helped you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said he treated us the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael closed the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Michael&#39;s voice remained measured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn&#39;t treat you the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he knew what each of you needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross scoffed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what did I need?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s insulting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked toward Diane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you needed something different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wiped another tear from her cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael&#39;s eyes shifted toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father believed you needed to understand what Eileen had actually given him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t ask her for anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Michael said. \u201cYou didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then Michael added, \u201cYour father remembered every time you asked him for money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he remembered something else about Eileen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I did not want him telling them.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I was ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>Because some things belonged only to Frank and me.<\/p>\n<p>Michael closed the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Eileen never asked him for money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked him to live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t let them see my face.<\/p>\n<p>Frank&#39;s final year had been filled with hospital rooms, medication schedules, insurance calls, sleepless nights, and mornings when I wasn&#39;t sure whether he would make it to lunch.<\/p>\n<p>I had begged him to keep fighting.<\/p>\n<p>Not for his money.<\/p>\n<p>Not for this house.<\/p>\n<p>For another morning.<\/p>\n<p>Diane started crying.<\/p>\n<p>Ross looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Whit placed the sealed documents back on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be time to discuss the estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much is there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Ross&#39;s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did Dad leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s not a number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit closed the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the amount will not be the first thing you learn today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat will be?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whit glanced toward Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Michael nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Whit placed two envelopes on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese contain the conditions your father attached to your inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross reached for his.<\/p>\n<p>Whit stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Frank wanted you to understand why the conditions exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross looked furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else is there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael slowly reached into the briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>He removed a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>He placed it face down.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEileen,\u201d he said quietly, \u201cthere is something Frank never told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael turned the photograph over.<\/p>\n<p>It showed a much younger Frank standing beside another man.<\/p>\n<p>Between them was a little boy.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the child&#39;s face.<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen the photograph before.<\/p>\n<p>But something about it felt familiar.<\/p>\n<p>Michael touched the edge of the picture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour husband asked me to explain who they were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man was Thomas Grant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the boy was his son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that have to do with Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael met his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
