Rebecca.

Rebecca had heard enough to understand.

Children noticed more than adults realized.

But they also doubted themselves.

That was why adults mattered.

Chloe continued.

“I wrote that you looked scared.”

Sophie said nothing.

Then she smiled.

“You were right.”

Chloe closer.

Sophie asked, “Do you ever wish she had said something else?”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she said what she knew.”

Sophie smiled.

“Exactly.”

The conversation reminded Rebecca of something important.

Children didn't need perfect language.

They needed permission to use imperfect language.

That idea became part of the nonprofit's next training program.

Instead of teaching adults to wait for clear statements, they taught them to listen for patterns.

A child didn't have to say, “I am being harmed.”

They could say, “I don't like going there.”

They could say, “He gets angry.”

They could say, “My mom is always sleeping.”

They could say, “I don't want to go home.”

Adults needed to hear those sentences without immediately filling in the blanks themselves.

Ask.

Don't assume.

That was the principle.

Sophie eventually decided she wanted to study education.

She told Rebecca one morning.

“I think I know.”

“What?”

“I want to become a teacher.”

Rebecca smiled.

“That's a good are.”

Sophie shook her head.

“I've never taught a class.”

“Not yet.”

The word mattered.

Not yet.

It suggested a future.

A future that had nothing to do with the basement.

Nothing to do with Guardian.

Nothing to do with Victor.

Nothing to do with the people who had tried to decide Sophie's life for her.

It belonged to Sophie.

That was the real victory.

Not simply that she had survived.

That she had become free to imagine who she might become.

At the end of summer, Chloe and Sophie sat on the porch.

Rebecca watched them from inside.

They were arguing about college schedules.

The conversation sounded ordinary.

Rebecca smiled.

She thought about how many years she had dreamed of ordinary.

Now she had it.

Not perfectly.

Not permanently.

But enough.

She didn't need more.

Click here to continue reading: PART 24: The Anniversary of
