Sophie was gripping the back of my sweater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;s never been shy with me,\u201d Chloe said.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene&#39;s eyes moved to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe frowned. \u201cShe doesn&#39;t want to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t your concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was sharp enough that even Chloe understood the conversation had changed.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped slightly to the side, keeping myself between them without making a show of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m Laura Carter,\u201d I said. \u201cChloe&#39;s mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie mentioned you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene&#39;s expression remained pleasant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you&#39;re Chloe&#39;s mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a perfectly reasonable answer. Still, something about the way she said it made my shoulders tighten.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie whispered, \u201cI don&#39;t want to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve been told. Your mother is waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe isn&#39;t upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene&#39;s eyes flicked toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The little girl stopped talking.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed the movement.<\/p>\n<p>So did Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>Children notice tone before they understand words.<\/p>\n<p>I crouched beside Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want me to stay with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is unnecessary. She&#39;s had a difficult week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of difficult week?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe misses her mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she&#39;s sick?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does she have?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene&#39;s smile thinned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s private.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no reason for me to interrogate her. At least, that&#39;s what I told myself.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sophie shifted her arm.<\/p>\n<p>Her sleeve slipped.<\/p>\n<p>I saw a bruise.<\/p>\n<p>It was not large, but it was dark enough to be unmistakable against her skin.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie pulled the sleeve down.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene noticed me noticing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe falls,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene&#39;s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again, the child flinched.<\/p>\n<p>This time I couldn&#39;t pretend I hadn&#39;t seen it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes your mother know about that bruise?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene answered before Sophie could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows Sophie is clumsy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie stared at the ground.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to ask another question, but Ms. Henderson approached us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything all right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene turned toward her with sudden warmth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerfectly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Henderson looked at Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>The teacher&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you ready to go home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Henderson glanced at Marlene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you said her mother was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you&#39;re her aunt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich aunt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene paused.<\/p>\n<p>It lasted only a second.<\/p>\n<p>But I noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer mother&#39;s sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t correct her.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t agree either.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Henderson seemed uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought her aunt&#39;s name was Rachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene&#39;s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are two aunts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The teacher nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conversation should have ended there.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Chloe tugged my sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has the shirt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the plastic bag Sophie was holding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat shirt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one that smelled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene immediately reached for it.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie pulled it away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene&#39;s voice was no longer warm.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn&#39;t have to give you anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re making this into something it isn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she&#39;s frightened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is eight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t answer my question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene&#39;s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t know this family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you don&#39;t know what you&#39;re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen perhaps you should stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost did.<\/p>\n<p>That is the part I remember most clearly.<\/p>\n<p>I almost let her take the bag.<\/p>\n<p>I almost told Chloe to come with me.<\/p>\n<p>I almost decided that whatever was happening inside that family wasn&#39;t mine to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sophie whispered something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMommy said not to let her take it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything inside me went still.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene heard it.<\/p>\n<p>She stepped toward Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie backed away.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe moved with her.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene stopped.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, none of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ms. Henderson said quietly, \u201cMarlene, perhaps we should discuss this inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene&#39;s answer came too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause there is nothing to discuss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why is she scared?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe isn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene looked at Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>The child lowered her head.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the bruise.<\/p>\n<p>The sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>The plastic bag.<\/p>\n<p>The way she kept looking toward the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>The way she had said her mother wasn&#39;t upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>And now the sentence about her mother telling her not to surrender the shirt.<\/p>\n<p>I still didn&#39;t know what it meant.<\/p>\n<p>But I knew I couldn&#39;t ignore it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Sophie sleeping?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of question is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA simple one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe locked the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene turned sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSophie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The little girl began to cry.<\/p>\n<p>I knelt beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich door?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe basement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Henderson&#39;s face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat basement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no reason to continue this conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie whispered, \u201cMommy is downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fair seemed to become silent around us.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#39;t actually silent. Music still played near the gym. Children still shouted.
