Sophie froze with her lunchbox against her chest. I felt heat climb into my face.

“Chloe,” I said sharply, “that is not something you say about another person.” My daughter looked at me as if I had misunderstood her completely. “But she does.” Sophie lowered her eyes. Her fingers tightened around the handle of her lunchbox until her knuckles turned pale.

The school’s spring fair was supposed to be easy. Paper banners hung between the trees, music drifted from the gymnasium, and parents stood in loose circles beside folding tables covered with lemonade, cookies, and small paper plates of sandwiches. I had spent most of the afternoon answering work messages while pretending I wasn't.

Then Chloe had tugged on my sleeve.

“Mom, look at Sophie.”

I glanced over. Sophie was eight, the same age as Chloe, and had been in her class since September. She was standing alone near the edge of the playground, although children moved around her constantly. Her yellow shirt had a dark stain near the hem. One sleeve was pulled farther down than the other.

“What about her?” I asked.

“She keeps doing that.”

“Doing what?”

“Looking at the door.”

I followed Chloe's gaze. Sophie was staring toward the school entrance, where adults came and went carrying drinks and folding chairs. Every few seconds she looked over her shoulder, then back toward the parking lot.

“She probably wants to find her aunt,” I said.

“She doesn't want to go home.”

Chloe said it casually, as though she were telling me Sophie didn't like broccoli. I almost laughed.

“Where did you get that idea?”

“She told me.”

I finally put my phone away. “When?”

“At lunch.”

“What exactly did she say?”

Chloe shrugged. “She said her mom was sick.”

That should have stayed with me. Instead, I was distracted by the noise around us and by the fact that Chloe had spent the previous week becoming unusually interested in Sophie. My daughter had a habit of adopting people who seemed lonely. Sometimes it lasted a day. Sometimes it lasted a month.

“Maybe her mom really is sick,” I said.

Chloe looked at me seriously. “She isn't sick like Grandma was.”

There was something in her voice that made me stop.

“What do you mean?”

“She said her mom doesn't sleep upstairs anymore.”

Before I could ask another question, Sophie appeared beside us.

She had a small plastic bag in one hand. Her other hand was tucked under her opposite elbow. When she saw Chloe, she gave a nervous smile.

“Hi.”

“Hi,” Chloe answered.

I smiled at her too. “How are you, sweetheart?”

Sophie nodded.

“Good.”

It was an automatic answer. Too quick.

“Are you having fun?”

Another nod.

“Where's your aunt?”

Sophie glanced toward the parking lot.

“She'll come.”

“When?”

“I don't know.”

Something about the answer bothered me, but I couldn't have said why. Sophie wasn't crying. She wasn't asking for help. She wasn't doing anything dramatic. She simply stood there as though she were waiting for a bus that might or might not arrive.

Chloe pointed at the plastic bag.

“What is that?”

Sophie pulled it behind her.

“Nothing.”

“You're holding clothes.”

“They're dirty.”

“Why?”

Sophie didn't answer.

Chloe looked at me.

I gave her the warning look mothers develop without realizing it.

Don't push.

She understood, but only for about ten seconds.

Then she whispered, “That's what smells.”

Sophie heard her.

Her face changed.

Not anger. Not embarrassment.

Fear.

She took one step backward.

I caught Chloe gently by the shoulder. “That's enough.”

“I wasn't being mean.”

“I know.”

“But—”

“Enough.”

Sophie looked toward the school building again. A teacher named Ms. Henderson was arranging cups near the lemonade table. She noticed Sophie and waved.

Sophie didn't wave back.

Instead, she slipped behind Chloe.

That surprised me more than the comment about the smell.

“Sophie?” I said gently. “Do you want me to get your teacher?”

She shook her head.

“Do you want to sit with us?”

Another shake.

“Okay.”

I didn't want to make things worse. I had already been too direct.

Sophie turned away, but before she left, Chloe caught her hand.

“Sit with me.”

Sophie hesitated.

Then she sat.

For several minutes, the three of us watched the fair continue around us. Children ran between tables. Someone dropped a tray of cupcakes. A father laughed too loudly near the raffle booth. The ordinary noise of a school celebration wrapped around us.

Then Sophie whispered, “I don't want her to find me.”

I looked at her.

“Who?”

She didn't answer.

Chloe did.

“My aunt.”

Sophie immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“You said your aunt was coming.”

“I know.”

“Then why don't you want her to find you?”

Sophie stared at the ground.

“I didn't say that.”

I looked at Chloe, then back at Sophie.

“Sweetheart, you don't have to be afraid of answering me.”

Sophie pulled the plastic bag closer.

“I just don't want to go home yet.”

“Why?”

“My mom is there.”

I assumed she meant her mother was at home.

“Is she sick?”

Sophie nodded.

“Very sick?”

Another nod.

“Does she have someone helping her?”

Sophie looked toward the parking lot.

“She has Marlene.”

I didn't know that name.

“Who's Marlene?”

Sophie pressed her lips together.

“My aunt.”

A voice called from behind us.

“Sophie?”

The little girl went rigid.

I turned.

A woman was walking toward us from the front gate. She wore dark sunglasses despite the cloudy afternoon and carried a black handbag against her side. Her clothes were neat, her hair carefully arranged, and she moved with the confidence of someone who expected people to step aside.

Sophie grabbed Chloe's wrist.

Hard.

Chloe winced.

I stood.

The woman stopped several feet away.

“There you are.”

Sophie didn't move.

The woman smiled.

“Come on, sweetheart. We're leaving.”

Sophie looked at me.

Not at the woman.

At me.

I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

“Are you Marlene?” I asked.

The woman removed her sunglasses slowly.

“Yes.”

She smiled again.

But Sophie had already moved behind me.

And for the first time that afternoon, I stopped wondering whether my daughter had been rude.

I started wondering what she had noticed that I had missed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The More I Tried to Explain Away One Frightened Child, the More Small Details Began Pointing Toward Something Much Worse

The first thing my daughter said that afternoon was so embarrassing that I wished the ground would open beneath the picnic tables. “Mom, Sophie smells like dead food.” She said …

[1

post-7221","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-insightdrama
["GET
