24 – What My Sister Knew

We went back through every photograph my sister had ever kept.

There were hundreds.

Birthdays.

Christmas dinners.

Laura and Clare.

Michael as a child.

Henry at work.

Family vacations.

School ceremonies.

Ordinary moments that had seemed meaningless when I first saw them.

Now every background mattered.

Every reflection.

Every stranger.

Every vehicle.

Daniel and Samuel worked methodically.

Clare sat beside me at the dining table, turning photographs over one by one.

Then she found one.

It had been taken outside Laura's school.

Laura was standing with Clare.

Behind them was a man near a parked car.

The photograph was blurry.

But his face was visible.

Thomas Henry.

Or the man Jessica claimed was Thomas Henry.

Clare stared at him.

“He was watching Mom.”

“Yes.”

The photograph had been taken two months before the accident.

Another showed him outside the bank.

Another outside Laura's apartment.

Another near my old house.

He had been everywhere.

But my sister had known.

That was the part I couldn't escape.

She had photographed him too.

And she had not destroyed the pictures.

She had saved them.

Daniel found an envelope labeled:

“People Eleanor doesn't know.”

Inside were photographs of Thomas.

And notes.

“Seen following Laura.”

“Seen with Henry Vale.”

“Seen outside bank.”

“Seen speaking with Victor.”

Then one sentence:

“He says he is trying to protect Laura.”

Clare looked at me.

“Maybe he was.”

I didn't want to believe it.

People who followed women, watched houses, moved money, and disappeared behind aliases were not easy to call protectors.

But my sister had trusted him enough to tell me to trust him.

That meant something.

We found her final note at the bottom of the envelope.

“Thomas knows what happened the morning Laura died.”

Daniel read it aloud.

The date was the day after the accident.

My sister had written that Thomas came to her house late at night.

He told her Laura had survived the initial crash.

He told her Henry Bennett had delayed the emergency call.

He told her Jessica was there.

He told her Michael was there.

And he told her Victor arrived afterward.

But Thomas had seen something none of the others had mentioned.

A second vehicle.

A dark sedan.

It had left the scene before police arrived.

The driver was Henry Vale.

That meant Henry Vale had been there too.

The man officially dead seventeen years earlier.

Unless my sister had been mistaken.

Daniel checked the timeline.

Henry Vale's official death occurred years before Laura's accident.

The records were clear.

But perhaps the man at the scene was not Henry Vale.

Perhaps it was Thomas Henry.

Perhaps the identity had been confused.

We needed proof.

The answer came from an old photograph.

Thomas was young.

Very young.

He looked enough like Henry Vale to explain the confusion.

Father and son.

Two men who could be mistaken from a distance.

One officially dead.

One officially nonexistent.

And one of them had been at the accident.

Jessica was brought back for another interview.

She identified Thomas from the photograph.

“That is him.”

“Did he work for Henry Vale?”

“Yes.”

“Did he ever use another name?”

“Several.”

“Did he know about the money?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know about the ledger?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know about Laura?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know about the accident?”

Jessica lowered her head.

“Yes.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“What did he do?”

Jessica whispered:

“He tried to help her.”

The room went still.

She explained that after the crash, Thomas had approached Laura's vehicle.

Laura was alive.

He tried to open the door.

Henry Bennett stopped him.

Henry threatened him.

Thomas backed away.

Then Michael arrived.

Thomas watched them search Laura's vehicle.

He saw the phone taken.

He saw the red box removed.

He saw Jessica crying.

And he left.

“Why didn't he call the police?”

Jessica looked at me.

“Because Henry Vale had his family.”

“His family?”

“His mother.”

Margaret.

Henry Vale had threatened Margaret.

Thomas believed that if he spoke, his mother would be harmed.

But Margaret had already been working with Laura.

She had been trying to protect Clare.

Thomas had been trapped.

Like Victor.

Like Jessica.

Everyone had been trapped.

Yet people had still made choices.

Daniel asked Jessica why Thomas was appearing now.

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Did Victor know where he was?”

“Yes.”

“Did Victor contact him?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After you left Briar Hollow.”

That explained Victor's disappearance.

Maybe Victor had not fled to protect himself.

Maybe he had gone to find Thomas.

We searched Victor's last known locations.

A hotel room.

An empty office.

A storage unit.

Nothing.

Then Daniel found a receipt.

Victor had rented a vehicle using cash.

The destination was Hudson.

The date was two days before we returned to my old house.

He had gone there first.

To my old house.

Perhaps to meet Thomas.

Perhaps to retrieve something.

We returned to the house with a warrant.

This time, we searched everything.

The attic.

The walls.

The crawl space.

The basement.

The chimney.

Samuel found a loose brick behind the fireplace.

Inside was a small notebook.

The cover was damaged.

The first page contained my sister's handwriting.

“Thomas says Laura left the original ledger somewhere Eleanor would never search.”

I stared at the words.

“Somewhere I would never search.”

Daniel turned the page.

There was a drawing.

A simple floor plan of my old house.

One room was circled.

The nursery.

Clare's nursery.

I had not thought about that room in years.

Laura had painted it before Clare was born.

After Laura died, I couldn't enter it.

I had eventually closed the door.

When we sold the house, the room had remained almost untouched.

We went upstairs.

The nursery had become a guest room.

But beneath the new flooring, we found the old boards.

One had been replaced.

We removed it.

Beneath it was a shallow cavity.

Inside was a small wooden box.

Not red.

Not metal.

Wood.

The box contained letters.

Laura's letters.

My sister's letters.

And a photograph.

But no ledger.

There was one final object.

A cassette recording.

The label said:

“ELEANOR — LISTEN LAST.”

My hands trembled.

Daniel found an old player.

The recording began with my sister's voice.

“Eleanor, if you're hearing this, I didn't get the chance to tell you everything.”

She paused.

“I was afraid.”

Another pause.

“I was paid to stay silent.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“But I stopped taking the money.”

She explained that she had discovered the money being moved through Henry Vale's network.

She had discovered the plan to use Clare's trust.

She had discovered the guardianship scheme.

And she had discovered that Laura was being watched.

Then she said something that made Clare cry.

“Laura trusted you more than anyone.”

The recording continued.

“Thomas told me the ledger was not the most important thing.”

I looked at Daniel.

“What is more important?”

My sister answered from the recording.

“The person who ordered the ledger moved.”

Then she named the person.

I stopped breathing.

Clare squeezed my hand.

Daniel leaned closer to the speaker.

My sister said:

“It wasn't Henry Bennett.”

A pause.

“It wasn't Henry Vale.”

Another pause.

“And it wasn't Victor.”

The recording crackled.

Then her voice returned.

“It was someone Eleanor has trusted all her life.”

The tape ended.

Nobody moved.

I stared at the silent machine.

There was only one person in my mind.

One person who had known where I lived.

Where I kept my documents.

Who I trusted.

Who had known about Laura.

Who had known about Clare's money.

Who had known when I sold my house.

But that person was dead.

My sister.

I shook my head.

“No.”

Daniel looked at me.

“What?”

I stood slowly.

“My sister wasn't the only person who had access to everything.”

Clare looked frightened.

“Who else?”

I thought about the old family.

The people who came to our house.

The people Henry trusted.

The people who knew where the keys were kept.

Then I remembered something I had forgotten for decades.

A family friend.

A man who had been present at every major event.

A man who had helped Henry with paperwork.

A man who had been in my house the week before Laura died.

A man whose name had never appeared in the ledger.

I whispered his name.

Daniel's expression changed.

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

Clare looked between us.

“Who?”

I looked toward the window.

The same black vehicle was parked across the street.

This time, someone was sitting inside.

And I knew exactly who it was.
