The confident woman who had once walked through my house wearing a diamond bracelet and speaking about family obligations was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Clare stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have the missing pages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Michael wanted them destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you destroy them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer sounded almost absurd.<\/p>\n<p>After everything she had done, everything she had helped hide, tiredness seemed too small a reason.<\/p>\n<p>But then she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was tired of being afraid of Michael. I was tired of Victor. I was tired of pretending Laura&#39;s death was an accident. And I was tired of looking at Clare and knowing that her mother died because people like us wanted money more than they wanted the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clare&#39;s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were her friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou helped kill her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI helped create the circumstances that led to her death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCareful with your wording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took a folded envelope from inside her coat.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did not take it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore he was arrested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave them to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thought I would destroy them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he told me something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Clare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said your grandmother was never supposed to survive the first plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My blood went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat first plan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica opened the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The pages were old.<\/p>\n<p>The first showed a financial schedule.<\/p>\n<p>The second showed a guardianship petition.<\/p>\n<p>The third contained a handwritten note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor&#39;s assets must be transferred before Clare reaches majority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The date was four years before Michael ordered me out.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat predates the dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Jessica said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt predates the Hudson sale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the sale was part of the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael knew your house was worth a lot. He convinced you to sell it because he wanted the money liquid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the old betrayal again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me the house needed to be sold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he was helping me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was helping himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clare looked at Jessica.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael had already taken most of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother found out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became silent.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica explained that Laura had discovered Michael&#39;s withdrawals and confronted him. Henry became involved. Henry Vale became involved. Victor was brought in because of his banking connections.<\/p>\n<p>Laura began gathering evidence.<\/p>\n<p>She contacted Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>She contacted my sister.<\/p>\n<p>And she planned to contact me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the moment they became afraid,\u201d Jessica said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry Bennett. Michael. Henry Vale. And eventually Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhat about you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was already afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She told us she had been involved with Michael before Laura&#39;s death. She knew Michael wanted Laura&#39;s trust money. She knew Henry was protecting him. But she claimed she did not know Henry planned to stop Laura from reaching me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why were you at the motel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Michael asked me to watch Laura.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the morning of the crash?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica&#39;s voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was driving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clare looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked, \u201cDid you intentionally hit Laura&#39;s vehicle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI moved into her lane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael told me to scare her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScare her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if she believed someone was following her, she would turn around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you lost control?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The admission hung in the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI moved toward her because I thought she would brake. I thought she would stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Laura was alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas she conscious?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clare covered her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica whispered, \u201cShe asked for Eleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Laura had been alive.<\/p>\n<p>She had called for me.<\/p>\n<p>And they had delayed help.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica said Henry told them they had to remove the evidence before calling emergency services. Michael searched Laura&#39;s vehicle. He took her phone. Henry took the red box.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica said she wanted to call for help.<\/p>\n<p>Henry threatened her.<\/p>\n<p>Then Victor arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Victor do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe argued with Henry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he help Laura?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer hurt more than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Victor had not caused the crash.<\/p>\n<p>But he had stood there.<\/p>\n<p>He had known.<\/p>\n<p>He had watched.<\/p>\n<p>And he had remained silent.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica handed Daniel the missing pages.<\/p>\n<p>The first showed the payment to Martin Cole.<\/p>\n<p>The second showed payments to Peter Sloan.<\/p>\n<p>The third showed money moving from Henry Vale&#39;s companies into Victor&#39;s accounts.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth showed something none of us expected.<\/p>\n<p>A transfer from Victor to an account belonging to Clare.<\/p>\n<p>The amount was $150,000.<\/p>\n<p>The date was three weeks after Laura&#39;s death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor replaced part of what Michael stole,\u201d Jessica said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Laura had asked him to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did you help Michael?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked at Clare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was selfish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no defense in her voice.<\/p>\n<p>Just exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted the money. I wanted the house. I wanted the life Michael promised me. And I believed I could live with what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou couldn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica then told us about the red box.<\/p>\n<p>Henry had taken it from the motel.<\/p>\n<p>After the accident, he gave it to Jessica because he believed she would keep it hidden.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, when Henry died, Jessica used the box to blackmail Michael.<\/p>\n<p>She threatened to expose him unless he continued supporting her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was why you stayed with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd why did you eventually give us the box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Clare found out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clare looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did I find out?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I had been involved with your mother before she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clare stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked stunned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted me to hate you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel folded the missing pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe person who sent Eleanor the anonymous warnings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou warned me not to trust Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou warned me someone had paid for the accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you come forward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I was afraid Michael would kill me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica said she had learned that Victor was not the true controller of the network.<\/p>\n<p>Someone else had been using Victor&#39;s companies.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had ordered the final movement of money after my house was sold.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had instructed Michael to accelerate the guardianship plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know the real name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know a title.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat title?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Beneficiary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word sounded ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>Then Jessica explained.<\/p>\n<p>The person used that title in documents.<\/p>\n<p>Not owner.<\/p>\n<p>Not trustee.<\/p>\n<p>Not manager.<\/p>\n<p>Beneficiary.<\/p>\n<p>The person received money without appearing to control the companies.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel immediately understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone above Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe missing pages identify the account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica pointed to the final page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel read it.<\/p>\n<p>The account was held offshore.<\/p>\n<p>But the beneficiary&#39;s initials were visible.<\/p>\n<p>E.B.<\/p>\n<p>My initials.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room disappear.<\/p>\n<p>Clare grabbed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s not possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s not your account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are my initials there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they used your identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make it appear that you were the person receiving the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were preparing to frame Eleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wanted the entire financial trail to end with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clare whispered, \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if the authorities followed the money, they would believe your grandmother had been secretly moving assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>The fake medical records.<\/p>\n<p>The guardianship petition.<\/p>\n<p>The Briar Hollow house.<\/p>\n<p>The fabricated confusion.<\/p>\n<p>The altered signatures.<\/p>\n<p>They had not merely wanted my money.<\/p>\n<p>They had wanted to make me look guilty of taking it.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel gathered the evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Jessica said one final thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe account is still active.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Victor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s already gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack to the place where the ledger began.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica whispered the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour Hudson house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my breath catch.<\/p>\n<p>The house I had sold.<\/p>\n<p>The house where I thought the story had ended.<\/p>\n<p>The house where Michael had convinced me to walk away from everything.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had gone back there.<\/p>\n<p>And if Jessica was telling the
