Daniel drove. Clare sat beside me in the back seat, holding the printed photograph of the ledger page against her knees. Nobody spoke much during the drive. We had learned that silence was sometimes easier than trying to predict what another discovery would do to us.

The motel had once been painted white, but years of weather had turned the exterior gray. Several windows were boarded over. Weeds pushed through cracks in the parking lot, and the faded sign above the office had lost half its letters. Daniel parked near the entrance and checked the property records before we stepped out.

“Room 9 is still there,” he said.

I looked toward the row of doors.

“Are we sure Laura stayed here?”

“No,” Daniel replied. “But the message gave us a specific claim. We verify it before we believe it.”

Inside the abandoned office, dust covered everything. Daniel had obtained permission from the property owner to inspect the building, but he had also arranged for a local deputy to remain nearby. We had learned enough about our family to understand that an old motel room could hold more than memories. It could hold evidence someone had forgotten to destroy.

Room 9 was at the far end of the building.

The lock had been replaced.

Daniel examined the door, then called the property owner, who confirmed that no tenant had occupied the room since the motel closed. He gave Daniel permission to enter.

The door opened with a long scrape.

The room smelled of damp wood and stale air. The furniture was gone except for a broken nightstand and a metal bed frame. Sunlight came through a gap in the curtains and fell across the floor.

Clare stepped inside.

“This is where Mom was?”

“We don't know yet,” I said.

Daniel began photographing the room.

I noticed a mark on the wall beside the bed.

Three letters.

L.B.

Laura Bennett.

My throat tightened.

Clare saw them too.

Someone had carved the initials into the paint.

Below them was a date.

The day before the accident.

We searched every inch of the room.

There was nothing beneath the mattress frame. Nothing inside the nightstand. Nothing behind the curtain. The bathroom had been stripped almost completely, but Samuel Reed had taught us to look for changes rather than objects.

Daniel noticed the baseboard behind the sink.

One section was newer than the rest.

He removed it carefully.

Inside was a small plastic bag.

It contained a motel key.

Room 14.

Clare stared at it.

“Fourteen.”

I felt a chill.

Victor's numbers.

Fourteen.

Twenty-two.

Nine.

Daniel turned the key over.

A tiny number had been stamped into the metal.

22.

He looked at me.

“Now we have two of the three.”

“And nine is the room we're standing in,” I said.

The numbers were not random.

They had been instructions.

But instructions from whom?

Daniel photographed the key and bag before opening anything else.

Inside the plastic bag was a folded receipt from the motel office.

Room 14.

Check-in date: the day before Laura's death.

The name on the receipt was not Laura Bennett.

It was Margaret Vale.

Clare whispered, “My mother's aunt.”

“Yes.”

There was a second receipt.

Room 9.

Same date.

The guest name had been left blank.

Daniel looked at me.

“Someone wanted to make sure there was no name attached to this room.”

I looked around.

“Then why leave Laura's initials?”

“Maybe they weren't left by the person who rented the room.”

The distinction mattered.

We searched the walls again.

Behind a damaged section of wallpaper, Samuel found a small piece of photographic film. It had been tucked into a crack and protected by plastic.

Daniel sent a photograph of it to a forensic imaging specialist.

While we waited, I stood beside the window.

From there, I could see the road.

The motel parking lot faced the highway.

A person in Room 9 could see every car entering the property.

And someone outside could watch the room.

Clare came beside me.

“Mom was hiding.”

“I think so.”

“From Dad?”

I knew which father she meant.

“Maybe.”

She looked down.

“Then why would she meet Margaret here?”

“I don't know.”

Daniel's phone rang.

The imaging specialist had recovered enough detail from the film to identify a photograph.

It showed Laura sitting at a motel table.

Across from her sat a man.

His face was partially obscured.

But the watch on his wrist was visible.

Daniel enlarged it.

I recognized it immediately.

Henry's watch.

Clare stepped backward.

“No.”

I held her hand.

The photograph had been taken through a window from outside the room.

Laura appeared frightened.

Henry was leaning toward her.

On the table between them was a red metal box.

The same box that eventually came into Jessica's possession.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“Someone was watching them.”

I pointed toward the corner.

There was another vehicle reflected in the glass.

A black SUV.

Jessica's vehicle.

Or at least a vehicle matching the one seen near the accident.

The photograph did not prove she was driving it.

But it proved someone with that vehicle was there.

Then Daniel noticed something else.

A fourth person was visible in the reflection.

Standing behind the photographer.

The image was blurry.

But the person's posture was unmistakable.

Victor.

I felt the room go cold.

Victor had told us he followed Laura.

He had said he saw Michael, Jessica, and Henry after the crash.

Now we had evidence that he had been watching Laura before the crash.

Clare's face hardened.

“He lied.”

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“About how much?”

“We don't know yet.”

We returned home after dark.

Before we left the motel, Daniel had the room sealed for further examination.
