been telling the truth.

We changed our plan.

Instead of going directly to Vermont, we checked Victor’s records.

There were gaps.

Not criminal records.

Travel records.

He had visited Vermont repeatedly in the months after Laura’s death.

The destinations were near where Dr. Sloan had lived.

Victor claimed the trips were business.

Daniel called one of his old associates.

The answer was different.

Victor had been visiting Miriam.

I looked at him.

“You lied.”

“I didn't know how to explain.”

“Try.”

“Miriam had copies of Laura's records.”

“Did she give them to you?”

“No.”

“Then why did you visit her?”

“She asked me to investigate Henry.”

“Why you?”

“Because she didn't trust the police.”

“And you?”

“I didn't trust myself.”

I sat back.

It was becoming impossible to separate confession from manipulation.

We drove to Vermont anyway.

Dr. Miriam Sloan lived in a small farmhouse outside a village.

She opened the door before we knocked twice.

She looked at me.

Then at Clare.

Her face changed.

“Oh.”

“You know us.”

“I know who you here?”

Victor stepped forward.

“Yes.”

She closed the door.

We stood outside.

“Miriam,” I said, “please.”

After a long pause, the door opened again.

“Come in.”

The house smelled of cedar and coffee.

Photographs covered one wall.

Laura appeared in several.

Young.

Laughing.

Pregnant.

Holding baby Clare.

I had never seen the photographs.

Miriam watched me study them.

“Laura license.”

“For what?”

“He claimed I had falsified Laura's medical records.”

I felt a familiar chill.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“What was he trying to hide?”

“Laura had documented bruises.”

“From Michael?”

Miriam shook her head.

“From Henry.”

The room went silent.

“Henry hurt Laura?”

“Not intentionally, at first.”

Miriam explained that Laura had once come to her after an argument with Henry.

She had bruising on her wrist.

She said Henry had grabbed her when she tried to leave.

She did not want to involve police.

She was afraid of what would happen to Clare.

I closed my eyes.

Henry had never been violent toward me.

Not once.

But Laura had seen a side of him I had never known existed.

Miriam continued.

“Laura believed Henry was becoming unstable because he was desperate to protect Michael.”

“Did he know you documented the injuries?”

“Yes.”

“That is why he threatened you.”

“Yes.”

“What did Laura tell you before she died?”

Miriam walked to a cabinet.

She removed a folder.

Inside were medical notes.

Photographs.

A copy of a letter.

And a handwritten page from Laura.

Miriam handed it to me.

I read.

Henry believes protecting Michael is the same as loving him.

It isn't.

I want Eleanor to know this.

She is the only person who will see Michael as he is and still remember the boy he was.

The words hurt.

Laura had understood me.

Perhaps better than I understood myself.

“What else?” I asked.

Miriam took a breath.

“Laura told me she had discovered that Henry was hiding a second account.”

“The one for Clare.”

“Yes.”

“She knew.”

“She knew everything.”

“Did she know about Jessica?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know Jessica was following her?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know about the accident?”

“No.”

Miriam looked at Victor.

“He did.”

Victor lowered his eyes.

Miriam explained that Victor had visited her the week after Laura died.

He told her the family was handling the situation.

He asked for Laura’s medical records.

She refused.

He threatened to expose her for prescribing medication to Laura without authorization.

“She was your patient,” I said.

“I was terrified.”

“So you gave him nothing?”

“No.”

Miriam reached into another drawer.

“I made copies.”

The copies contained something I had never seen.

A toxicology report.

Laura had been given a sedative before the crash.

Not enough to kill her.

Enough to slow her reaction time.

Daniel looked at the report.

“Who prescribed it?”

Miriam shook her head.

“Not me.”

“Then who?”

“Dr. Martin Coleman's clinic.”

Daniel frowned.

“Cole?”

“No. Another doctor.”

“Who?”

“Dr. Peter Sloan.”

I stared.

“Sloan?”

“My husband.”

“Your husband?”

“He was Michael’s physician.”

The name was familiar.

Peter had treated Michael for anxiety after Laura died.

He had also written a letter supporting the claim that Michael was emotionally overwhelmed by the accident.

The letter had been used during the original investigation.

Daniel immediately saw the connection.

“The medical narrative was manufactured.”

Miriam nodded.

“Laura was sedated before the crash.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“Could Jessica have obtained the medication?”

“Yes.”

“Michael?”

“Yes.”

“Henry?”

“Yes.”

Victor finally spoke.

“I know who did.”

Everyone turned.

Victor looked at me.

“It was Michael.”

I felt something inside me break again.

“You told me he didn't cause the crash.”

“He didn't drive the SUV.”

“But he gave her the drug?”

Victor nodded.

“He told me he did.”

“Why?”

“He wanted her too tired to drive to you.”

Clare covered her mouth.

Miriam closed her eyes.

Michael had not planned to kill Laura.

He had planned to delay her.

To stop her from reaching me.

He had given her something that impaired her.

Jessica then followed her.

Henry intercepted her.

The accident became inevitable because four people made decisions that should never have been made.

The law would eventually have to decide who carried responsibility.

But morally, there was no single villain anymore.

There was an entire chain of choices.

Michael had believed he could control Laura.

Jessica had believed she could frighten her.

Henry had believed he could contain the consequences.

Victor had believed silence was safer than truth.

And Laura had died because every person around her chose themselves before choosing her.

Miriam handed me another envelope.

“Laura gave this to me the day before she died.”

Inside was a letter addressed to Clare.

My granddaughter had never seen it.

I gave it to her.

She read silently.

Her face changed as she reached the end.

“What does it say?” I asked.

She handed it to me.

Laura wrote:

My sweet girl,

You may grow up hearing many versions of why I am gone.

Please believe this: none of what happens will ever be your fault.

Your father loves you, but people can love each other and still make terrible choices.

If I cannot raise you, Eleanor will know how to keep you safe.

Trust her.

Ask questions.

Do not let anyone convince you that obedience is the same as love.

Clare cried.

Not loudly.

She simply lowered her head.

I wrapped my arms around her.

Miriam watched us.

“I kept that letter because I didn't know how to reach you.”

“Why now?”

“Because you came looking.”

There was a knock at the door.

Everyone froze.

Miriam looked toward the window.

“No one should know you're here.”

Daniel moved toward the curtains.

A vehicle sat at the end of the driveway.

Black SUV.

The same type seen outside Ruth’s house.

Victor went pale.

“That isn't mine.”

The vehicle remained still.

Then its lights came on.

Daniel called the police.

The SUV reversed.

Before it disappeared, someone threw a small object onto the driveway.

A phone.

Miriam opened the door only after police arrived.

Daniel picked it up.

The screen displayed one message.

YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHO PAID FOR THE ACCIDENT.

Below it was a photograph.

Henry.

Jessica.

Michael.

Victor.

And Martin Cole.

But this photograph had been taken after Laura’s death.

Standing beside them was someone none of us expected.

Dr. Peter Sloan.

Miriam stared at the photograph.

“My husband.”

Victor whispered.

“He was there.”

Daniel zoomed in.

On the table beside Peter was a folder.

A medical file.

Laura Bennett.

And beneath it, another name.

Eleanor Bennett.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: The Medical File Carried My Name Beside Laura’s, and What It Revealed
