10 – Victor Had Helped Bring the Truth to Light, Yet the Old Recording Suggested He Had Been Hiding One More Secret From Everyone

Victor agreed to meet us the next afternoon.

He chose a public library.

Not his office.

Not a restaurant.

A place with cameras, people, and glass doors.

Daniel noticed.

“So you're nervous.”

Victor gave him a tired smile.

“I've been nervous for twenty years.”

I placed the damaged memory card on the table.

Victor looked at it.

Then at me.

“You found it.”

“You knew it existed.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell us?”

“Because I was ashamed.”

“That answer is becoming very popular.”

He looked down.

“I knew Henry had created the account.”

“The account for Clare?”

“Yes.”

“You knew about it before Laura died?”

“Yes.”

“Did Laura know?”

“Yes.”

“Did Michael know?”

“No.”

I studied him.

“Then why did Henry say I couldn't know about it?”

“Because he believed you would confront him.”

“I would have.”

“That was the problem.”

Victor explained that Henry had opened the account after realizing Michael was becoming financially reckless.

He wanted to protect Clare.

But he had also used money from questionable investments to fund it.

Some of those investments involved Victor.

That meant the account itself was legitimate in purpose but contaminated by money whose origin was difficult to prove.

Laura had discovered it.

She planned to tell me.

Henry panicked.

He did not want me to know he had used family money without telling me.

So he tried to keep everything hidden.

“That still doesn't explain the recording,” I said.

Victor looked at Daniel.

“Do you want the truth?”

“Yes.”

Victor nodded.

“Henry asked me to help him stop Laura from going to you.”

“How?”

“By convincing her to wait.”

“Did you?”

“I tried.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought I could keep the family from collapsing.”

I almost laughed.

“You all thought hiding the truth would prevent collapse.”

Victor looked at me.

“You were the only one who understood that the collapse had already happened.”

Clare was silent beside me.

Victor continued.

“On the morning of the accident, I followed Henry.”

“Why?”

“He told me Laura had something that belonged to me.”

“What?”

“A ledger.”

“The second ledger?”

“Yes.”

“Did she have it?”

“She had a copy.”

“Where was it?”

“She planned to give it to you.”

I closed my eyes.

“So everyone knew she was coming to me.”

“Yes.”

“And everyone knew what she carried.”

“Yes.”

“What did you do?”

“I arrived after the crash.”

“That isn't what the recording suggests.”

Victor looked at the table.

“I was there before.”

The admission changed the room.

“Were you in the SUV?”

“No.”

“Then where?”

“On foot.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“I had followed Laura from a distance.”

“Did you cause the crash?”

“No.”

“Did you see Jessica?”

“Yes.”

“Did you see Michael?”

“Yes.”

“Did you see Henry?”

“Yes.”

“What did you do?”

Victor swallowed.

“I called Henry.”

“And?”

“I told him Laura was still alive.”

My chest tightened.

“What did he say?”

“He said to leave.”

“Did you?”

Victor nodded.

“That is what I did.”

“You left her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

There it was again.

Fear.

The excuse that had followed every person in this story.

I stood.

“I don't want to hear another word about fear.”

Victor did not protest.

Clare remained seated.

She asked quietly, “Did you know my mother was conscious?”

“Yes.”

“Did you hear her?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Victor looked at her.

“She asked whether Eleanor was coming.”

Clare began to cry.

Victor looked away.

“I have heard that sentence in my head every night since.”

I sat again.

There was nothing satisfying about learning the truth.

Truth did not restore Laura.

It did not erase ten years.

It simply gave pain a name.

Daniel asked Victor whether he still had the original ledger.

“No.”

“Who does?”

“I don't know.”

“Someone removed the page from the storage unit.”

Victor nodded.

“I suspected Michael.”

“He denied it.”

“It wasn't him.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Michael had already confessed to me that he didn't know the second ledger existed.”

“Then who took it?”

Victor hesitated.

“Henry.”

My head snapped up.

“Henry?”

“Before he died.”

“But Henry was dead when the page disappeared.”

“He removed the page years earlier.”

Daniel frowned.

“The torn edge was fresh.”

“The page you found was not the original.”

Silence.

Victor explained.

The missing ledger had been copied.

Someone had inserted a replacement page into the storage box.

The original had been removed long before Henry died.

The page recovered from Cole’s safe had been a copy.

That meant the person who took the original wanted something specific hidden.

“What was on it?” I asked.

Victor looked at me.

“Payments.”

“To whom?”

“People who helped Henry.”

“Cole?”

“Yes.”

“Jessica?”

“Yes.”

“Anyone else?”

Victor nodded.

“Your sister.”

I felt the room tilt.

“My sister was involved?”

“Not in the fraud.”

“Then why was she paid?”

“She helped Henry move money.”

“Why?”

“She believed he was protecting you.”

My sister had been alive when Henry died.

She had never mentioned any of this.

She died six years later.

I had always thought she kept her distance from the family because she disliked Michael.

Maybe she had known more than she ever told me.

Victor said she had received money from Henry to keep certain accounts separate from my name.

“Did she know about Laura?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know about the accident?”

“No.”

“She knew about the account?”

“Yes.”

I felt betrayed all over again.

Not because my sister had stolen from me.

Because she had known I was being lied to.

Victor reached into his briefcase.

He placed a small envelope on the table.

“This was hers.”

My name was written on it.

The handwriting was unmistakably my sister’s.

I opened it.

Eleanor,

If you are reading this, Henry is gone and I am probably gone too.

There is no clean way to explain what happened.

I knew Henry was hiding money.

I knew Michael had taken from Clare.

I knew Laura was trying to stop them.

I did not know what would happen to her.

After the accident, Henry begged me to help him keep you from discovering the accounts.

I agreed because I believed I was protecting you.

I was wrong.

The letter continued.

I saw Michael after the accident.

He was carrying Laura's phone.

He was crying.

He said she had told him something before the ambulance arrived.

Something about you.

Something that terrified him.

I had never heard this before.

“What did Laura tell him?” I whispered.

The letter answered.

She told Michael that you knew about the account.

But I didn't.

That meant Laura had believed I would discover it soon.

The final line was underlined.

She also told him that Henry was not Clare's only protector.

There was someone else.

Someone Laura trusted.

I looked at Victor.

“Who?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Clare frowned.

“Then why did you bring us the letter?”

Victor pointed to the envelope.

“There was something else inside.”

A photograph.

Laura stood beside another woman.

Not Jessica.

Not my sister.

A woman with dark hair.

I recognized her immediately.

Dr. Miriam Sloan.

She had been my mother's physician.

She had treated Laura during pregnancy.

She had disappeared from our family after Laura’s death.

I remembered something strange.

Miriam had once called me late at night.

She said she had information about Laura.

Before she could explain, Henry had taken the phone from me.

He told me Miriam was confused.

I had believed him.

Victor looked at me.

“She kept copies of Laura’s medical records.”

“Why?”

“Because Laura told her she was afraid someone would use a false medical diagnosis against her.”

My stomach tightened.

The memory-care plan.

The forged guardianship papers.

It had all begun with the same idea.

Convince people that the truth-teller is unstable.

Daniel leaned forward.

“We need to find Dr. Sloan.”

Victor nodded.

“She lives in Vermont.”

Clare stood.

“Then we go.”

I looked at her.

She was no longer the frightened sixteen-year-old girl standing in a hallway with a hidden phone.

She was an adult now.

Twenty years old.

Her mother’s daughter.

And she had inherited something more important than money.

She had inherited the refusal to look away.

We left the library with Miriam’s photograph.

As we reached the car, my phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

A woman's voice said:

“Eleanor, if you are looking for the truth about Laura, don't trust Victor.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Victor stood beside me.

He had heard every word.

His face had gone pale.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The
