small brass key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s what this opens?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We drove north that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Clare insisted on coming.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel objected.<\/p>\n<p>I did too.<\/p>\n<p>She refused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the documents are about my mother, I have a right to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was right.<\/p>\n<p>The storage facility smelled of concrete and old cardboard.<\/p>\n<p>Unit 217 was secured by a heavy padlock.<\/p>\n<p>The brass key opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were twelve boxes.<\/p>\n<p>The first contained property records.<\/p>\n<p>The second contained bank statements.<\/p>\n<p>The third contained photographs.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth contained recordings.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth contained correspondence between Henry and Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel opened one letter.<\/p>\n<p>It was from Henry.<\/p>\n<p>Michael,<\/p>\n<p>You cannot keep using the trust.<\/p>\n<p>Laura is watching the accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Stop before she finds the second ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Michael had replied:<\/p>\n<p>I only need six more months.<\/p>\n<p>I will replace it.<\/p>\n<p>Henry answered:<\/p>\n<p>You have said that three times.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>If Laura goes to Eleanor, we are finished.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down on the concrete floor.<\/p>\n<p>My husband ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you give it to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who took the page?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel searched the boxes.<\/p>\n<p>One was labeled JESSICA.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were photographs of Jessica meeting Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica meeting Henry.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica meeting Victor.<\/p>\n<p>And Jessica meeting a fourth person.<\/p>\n<p>A police officer.<\/p>\n<p>The date was six months after Laura\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>The officer\u2019s name was Martin Cole.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel recognized him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe retired eight years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was his role?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternal investigations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt a new piece click into place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas he involved in Laura\u2019s accident investigation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel checked the original police report.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Cole had signed it.<\/p>\n<p>Cause of death: accidental collision.<\/p>\n<p>No evidence of criminal activity.<\/p>\n<p>No witness statements attached.<\/p>\n<p>No roadside photographs.<\/p>\n<p>No mention of Laura\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>No mention of her purse.<\/p>\n<p>No mention of the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation had been stripped down to the bare minimum.<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked at the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCole was paid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel found a separate ledger.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>$25,000.<\/p>\n<p>Payment to M.C.<\/p>\n<p>Investigation closure.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The accident had not simply been hidden.<\/p>\n<p>It had been managed.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had decided what the police would see.<\/p>\n<p>And what they would never know.<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>A text from an unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>STOP LOOKING.<\/p>\n<p>Another arrived.<\/p>\n<p>YOUR GRANDDAUGHTER IS NOT SAFE.<\/p>\n<p>Clare saw the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel took the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. We have pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can preserve them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want the missing ledger page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may be gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked toward the storage unit entrance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know where it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Martin Cole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Cole wasn&#39;t paid just to close the accident investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was paid to make sure Laura&#39;s evidence disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he succeed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked at the boxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward a cardboard box in the corner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was an old police evidence envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The seal had been broken.<\/p>\n<p>A single sheet remained.<\/p>\n<p>Laura had written one sentence:<\/p>\n<p>Michael did not know I had copied the second ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Below it was an address.<\/p>\n<p>Not Briar Hollow.<\/p>\n<p>Not Hudson.<\/p>\n<p>Not Boston.<\/p>\n<p>A house in Albany.<\/p>\n<p>And beside the address, one name.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>My own name.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve never been there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren&#39;t supposed to know about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour husband bought it before he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something inside me collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Henry had hidden an entire property from me.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel found the deed.<\/p>\n<p>The owner was listed as Eleanor Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>The purchase date was six months before Henry\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>The down payment came from an account I had never seen.<\/p>\n<p>And the beneficiary was Clare.<\/p>\n<p>My husband had built a second life around secrets.<\/p>\n<p>But he had also left me a house.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps not for himself.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps for the truth.<\/p>\n<p>We left the storage facility after his final week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could barely breathe.<\/p>\n<p>Victor leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour husband was going to turn everything over to the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he handed me a final photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Henry stood beside his car.<\/p>\n<p>On the windshield was a handwritten note.<\/p>\n<p>WE KNOW ABOUT THE BOX.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Victor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho wrote this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never found out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Clare answered before I
