Jessica had been taken into custody for questioning, and Michael was being held while investigators reviewed the evidence recovered from Briar Hollow.

I sat at Ruth’s kitchen table with Henry’s letter in front of me.

I had read it six times.

Each time, the same sentence seemed to change shape.

We waited while Laura remained trapped in the car.

I could not stop imagining her.

Not the funeral photograph.

Not the smiling young woman I remembered.

The woman inside that wrecked vehicle.

Alive.

Waiting.

Calling for help that did not come.

Clare sat across from me, both hands wrapped around a mug she had forgotten to drink from.

“Grandma?”

“Yes?”

“Did Grandpa know he was going to die?”

I looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

“Then why would he leave that letter?”

“Because he knew he had done something he couldn't take back.”

She stared at the tabletop.

“Did he ever tell you he was sorry?”

“Not for this.”

The answer hurt more than I expected.

There had been countless small apologies in our marriage.

For forgetting groceries.

For missing an anniversary dinner.

For speaking sharply.

Never this.

Never the thing that mattered most.

At eight thirty, Daniel arrived.

He brought coffee and a stack of forms.

“The bank needs identification from both you and Clare,” he said. “The box was opened jointly under Laura’s estate.”

Clare looked at him.

“Why would my mother put me on it?”

“Because she expected you to inherit control of the contents when you turned eighteen.”

“I’m seventeen in four months.”

Daniel nodded.

“Which means someone wanted those contents kept hidden until then.”

I thought of Michael’s plan to send Clare away.

The timing suddenly felt less accidental.

He had nearly reached the point where Clare could begin asking questions legally.

The bank deposit box was opened in a private room.

A manager placed the contents on a gray felt mat.

There were three folders.

A sealed envelope.

A flash drive.

A small notebook.

And a key attached to a paper tag marked 217.

Clare reached toward the envelope.

Daniel stopped her gently.

“Let your grandmother open it.”

She nodded.

The envelope contained photocopies of bank records from ten years earlier.

Every withdrawal from Clare’s trust was listed.

Thirty thousand.

Twenty thousand.

Fifteen thousand.

Forty thousand.

The withdrawals continued over four years.

Nearly the entire account was gone.

But one transaction stood out.

A transfer of seventy-five thousand dollars had been made to an account belonging to Michael’s father.

Henry Bennett.

I stared at the name.

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel checked the date.

“It occurred eleven days after Laura died.”

Clare looked at me.

“Grandpa took my money?”

“I don't know.”

Daniel opened the notebook.

The first pages contained handwritten calculations.

Laura had tracked every withdrawal.

She had written dates, amounts, and account numbers.

On one page, she had written:

Michael says Dad borrowed against the house.

Below it:

No mortgage exists.

Then:

Where did $75,000 go?

The handwriting became increasingly hurried.

She had discovered something neither Michael nor Henry wanted her to find.

The flash drive contained scanned documents.

Daniel connected it to his laptop.

There were copies of emails between Laura and an accountant.

One email had been sent two days before the accident.

Laura wrote that she believed Michael was using Clare’s trust to cover debts created by a property scheme.

The accountant replied that the transactions appeared to involve a second person.

Not Michael.

Someone with authority over the family’s accounts.

Henry.

I felt my hands go numb.

Ruth reached across the table.

“You don't have to keep reading.”

“Yes, I do.”

The next file was a photograph.

It showed Henry standing outside a bank.

Beside him was a man I did not recognize.

The date was three months before Laura’s death.

Daniel zoomed in.

A sign behind them identified the building as a mortgage brokerage.

“Why would Henry be there?”

The notebook answered that question.

Laura had written:

Dad is refinancing properties in Michael’s name.

But the properties were not listed under Michael’s name.

They were being placed into shell companies.

The same kind of structure Daniel had discovered in the Briar Hollow documents.

A pattern had existed long before I knew there was a pattern.

Michael had not invented the scheme.

He had inherited it.

The room became quiet.

Clare looked at me.

“Was Grandpa the one who taught Dad?”

“I don’t know.”

The final folder contained a handwritten statement from Laura.

She had written it as if she expected to die.

She named Henry.

She named Michael.

She named Jessica.

And she named someone else.

A man called Victor Hale.

Daniel went still when he read the name.

“You know him?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He handled one of Henry’s investment accounts.”

I looked at him.

“Is he still alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Boston.”

The room seemed suddenly smaller.

“What does he know?”

“That depends on what he was involved in.”

The final page of Laura’s statement contained a sentence written twice.

Henry is not protecting Michael from the truth.

He is protecting Michael from the consequences.

Underneath:

If anything happens to me, look at Victor Hale.

We left the bank with copies of everything.

Outside, Clare stopped on the sidewalk.

“Grandma.”

I turned.

“I don't want to go back to Michael’s house.”

“You won't.”

“Even if they let me?”

“You don't have to.”

She looked relieved.

Then she asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Do you think Dad killed Mom?”

I took a breath.

“I don't know what happened in that car.”

“But Grandpa wrote that Dad took her phone.”

“Yes.”

“And he waited.”

“Yes.”

“Then Dad caused her death.”

I looked at her.

“He made choices that night that were unforgivable.”

“That isn't the same answer.”

“No.”

She waited.

I finally said, “The investigators will determine what can be proven. But you are allowed to know that your mother deserved help, and the people who were there chose not to give it.”

Clare wiped her eyes.

“That’s enough for me.”

Daniel’s phone rang.

He listened.

His expression changed.

“Where are you?”

He listened again.

“Do not let him leave.”

He ended the call.

“What happened?”

“Michael’s attorney just arrived at the station.”

“That’s normal.”

“He isn't representing Michael.”

I frowned.

“Then who?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Victor Hale.”

I felt the cold return.

The man named in Laura’s statement had arrived within an hour of us opening the bank box.

And he was not there to protect Michael.

He was there to control what happened next.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Victor Hale Offered Me a Way to Recover My Money, but His First Condition Made Me Question Who Had Really Been Running Everything

The next morning, the bank opened at nine.
