You let me call you Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clare shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou loved what we let you become.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the red box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica wiped her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recorder first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is already with the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Panic flashed across her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou brought the police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI brought the truth to people who can preserve it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica reached for the box.<\/p>\n<p>Clare placed her hand on the lid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis belongs to me,\u201d Clare said. \u201cIt belonged to my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a long pause, Jessica removed a tiny key from the chain around her neck.<\/p>\n<p>She placed it in Clare\u2019s palm.<\/p>\n<p>Clare unlocked the box.<\/p>\n<p>The hinges creaked.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were letters.<\/p>\n<p>Bank records.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>An old phone.<\/p>\n<p>And a small brass key labeled with a bank name and deposit-box number.<\/p>\n<p>On top lay an envelope addressed to me.<\/p>\n<p>I knew the handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Henry.<\/p>\n<p>My hands began to shake.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was dated two weeks before his death.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor,<\/p>\n<p>There are things I should have told you years ago.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to disappear.<\/p>\n<p>I forced myself to continue.<\/p>\n<p>I kept saying I was protecting our son.
