Educational travel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clare had attended public school.<\/p>\n<p>She had never had private tutoring.<\/p>\n<p>She had never traveled outside the country.<\/p>\n<p>Her medical bills had been covered by insurance.<\/p>\n<p>The education trust had paid for a life she never lived.<\/p>\n<p>The basement lock finally broke with a sharp metallic crack.<\/p>\n<p>The door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh paint.<\/p>\n<p>Bright lights.<\/p>\n<p>Metal filing cabinets.<\/p>\n<p>A desk.<\/p>\n<p>Two monitors.<\/p>\n<p>A scanner.<\/p>\n<p>A printer.<\/p>\n<p>Several prepaid phones.<\/p>\n<p>It was not a storage room.<\/p>\n<p>It was an office designed to manufacture paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>One cabinet was labeled E.B.<\/p>\n<p>Another C.B.<\/p>\n<p>The third said LAURA.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel opened mine first.<\/p>\n<p>Forged loan applications.<\/p>\n<p>Medical letters.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance forms.<\/p>\n<p>A petition for legal guardianship.<\/p>\n<p>Michael had described me as paranoid, unstable, forgetful, and emotionally aggressive.<\/p>\n<p>The petition had been prepared before the dinner argument.<\/p>\n<p>Before I refused childcare.<\/p>\n<p>Before he ordered me out.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe planned it before that night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe needed you to react.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted me angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe needed witnesses to your supposed instability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The file contained statements from Jessica, a neighbor I had never met, and a caregiver I had never hired.<\/p>\n<p>Each described things that had never happened.<\/p>\n<p>I became lost walking the twins to school.<\/p>\n<p>I left the stove burning.<\/p>\n<p>I accused Jessica of stealing.<\/p>\n<p>The last accusation was true.<\/p>\n<p>But only because she had.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Collins opened Clare\u2019s cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were school records, a passport, birth certificate, and trust statements.<\/p>\n<p>There were also documents requesting permission to send Clare to a boarding school in Vermont.<\/p>\n<p>Tuition would be paid from what remained of her mother\u2019s trust.<\/p>\n<p>Clare would be sent away.<\/p>\n<p>I would be placed in Meadowridge.<\/p>\n<p>Michael and Jessica would control the property and the evidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were removing both of us,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth looked at the cabinets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who might ask questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel opened the cabinet marked Laura.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were old photographs, correspondence, and legal documents.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom sat a small digital recorder inside a plastic evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>A note was taped to it.<\/p>\n<p>FOUND IN LAURA\u2019S CAR \u2014 DO NOT DESTROY UNTIL TRUST CLOSES.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Collins put on gloves.<\/p>\n<p>The recorder contained seven files.<\/p>\n<p>The final recording had been made the morning Laura died.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Collins hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Bennett, this may be difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlay it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s voice filled the basement.<\/p>\n<p>I had not heard it in ten years.<\/p>\n<p>She sounded angry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael, stop telling me I\u2019m imagining things. I saw the statements. You withdrew thirty thousand dollars from the account my parents created for Clare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s younger voice answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI borrowed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stole from your daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to put it back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Laura said, \u201cI changed the trust documents this morning. You are no longer the only trustee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael sounded furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had no right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Clare\u2019s mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m her father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also sent copies of every bank statement to your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>She had sent them to me?<\/p>\n<p>I had never received them.<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you send Eleanor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>The next file began hours later.<\/p>\n<p>Laura was crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything happens to me, the documents are in the red box. Michael knows I discovered the withdrawals. Clare\u2019s money is not safe.
