He sounded as though he had just discovered an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood morning, Ethan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Not how are you.<\/p>\n<p>Not happy birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Where are you?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m at my house,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went silent.<\/p>\n<p>I could almost hear him trying to reorganize the facts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou bought that place?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe villa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, that place has to be worth millions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned back in the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>He finally asked the question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you afford it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The question underneath all the other questions.<\/p>\n<p>I let a few seconds pass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother left me an inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not need to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut why wouldn&#39;t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the glass in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>That question might have sounded reasonable if he had called me because he missed me.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it arrived after he saw photographs of a house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it was private,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Mom, we&#39;re family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo why keep something like that from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would I announce it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>I could have made the conversation easy.<\/p>\n<p>I could have laughed and told him it was all a misunderstanding. I could have apologized for making him feel excluded. I could have invited him to visit.<\/p>\n<p>The old Linda would have done exactly that.<\/p>\n<p>The old Linda would have heard discomfort in her son&#39;s voice and rushed to remove it.<\/p>\n<p>But the woman sitting beside that ocean had finally learned that removing somebody else&#39;s discomfort often meant swallowing her own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is my birthday,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>The line went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You know now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, we were traveling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Darlene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s her birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo is mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew before you booked the trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re making this sound deliberate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was deliberate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, it wasn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou planned everything for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t mean I don&#39;t care about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did you keep treating my birthday as the day that could be sacrificed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had no immediate answer.<\/p>\n<p>I could picture him rubbing the back of his neck, something he had done since childhood whenever he knew he was losing an argument.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he said, \u201cI thought you&#39;d understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence that had protected him for years.<\/p>\n<p>You understand.<\/p>\n<p>As though understanding were a duty I owed him.<\/p>\n<p>As though a mother&#39;s patience had no limit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did understand,\u201d I said. \u201cThat was the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means I understood every time you chose something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understood when you called late. I understood when you mailed a card. I understood when you said we&#39;d celebrate later. I understood when later never came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never meant to hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He seemed relieved.<\/p>\n<p>Then I finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you hurt me anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The relief disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>A long silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ethan said, \u201cI am sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I listened carefully.<\/p>\n<p>It sounded sincere enough to make me sad.<\/p>\n<p>But before I could answer, he asked, \u201cCan we come out there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo see you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are traveling right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can change our plans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we should celebrate your birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the empty dining table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy birthday was yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we&#39;ll celebrate late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>The same old pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have flights next week,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe could come early. Stay with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, come on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe villa isn&#39;t available for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I don&#39;t want guests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t want us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t want people arriving because they saw a house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither was spending years being told my birthday could wait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His tone changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you punishing me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA boundary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou bought a three-million-dollar villa and now you&#39;re setting rules?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bought the villa because I could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you do this to make a point?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was silent.<\/p>\n<p>I added, \u201cThe point was for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another voice appeared behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Samantha.<\/p>\n<p>I heard her clearly enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is being ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan said something I could not make out.<\/p>\n<p>Samantha answered louder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her this is petty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held the phone still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut Samantha on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut her on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Samantha spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi, Linda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She had always called me Linda.<\/p>\n<p>Never Mom.<\/p>\n<p>I had stopped correcting her years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHappy birthday week to your mother,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard you think I&#39;m petty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think this is dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mean buying my own home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean making a public announcement about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI posted three photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew everyone would react.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hoped they would not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes perfect sense to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She became quieter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have told Ethan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is your son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe should know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re deliberately shutting us out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I am deciding who gets access to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave a short laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily is not a password.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means saying we&#39;re family does not give you ownership of my time, my home, or my money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, this is getting out of hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cIt is finally becoming honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samantha&#39;s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re acting as though Ethan abandoned you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did not abandon me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what is the problem?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe repeatedly chose your mother&#39;s birthday over mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is because her birthday is important to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo was mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she makes a bigger deal about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was quiet for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then I said, \u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samantha stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe makes enough noise that everyone remembers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I realized then that Ethan had probably understood the same thing long before I did.<\/p>\n<p>Darlene did not receive more love because she was more deserving.<\/p>\n<p>She received more attention because she demanded it.<\/p>\n<p>And Ethan had learned to respond to whoever made the most noise.<\/p>\n<p>I had made myself quiet.<\/p>\n<p>So he had learned to leave me waiting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan,\u201d I said, \u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love you too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I am not going to compete for basic consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t want you to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stop making me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sounded frustrated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we at least visit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you are asking for access to my home before you&#39;ve repaired the relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t what this is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen prove it without coming here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not respond.<\/p>\n<p>Samantha muttered something in the background.<\/p>\n<p>I heard enough to know she was angry.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ethan said, \u201cYou&#39;re really shutting us out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am shutting out entitlement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you&#39;re treating me like a stranger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I&#39;m treating you like an adult who has choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That silenced him.<\/p>\n<p>I could hear his breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, he asked, \u201cWhat do you want me to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question mattered.<\/p>\n<p>But I knew better than to give him a performance to complete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to decide whether you want a relationship with me when there is nothing to gain from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo villa. No inheritance. No photographs.
