When you sold it independently and protected the proceeds, the story they had been selling suddenly stopped being true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked the question that frightened me most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan they use me to save themselves?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana did not soften her answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wrote several names on a notepad.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Keller.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Lang.<\/p>\n<p>Marina Crest Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>She explained that Ryan, Melissa&#39;s cousin, appeared to have connections to several questionable business ventures. Victor was associated with private financing entities connected to the restaurant deal. Marina Crest appeared to be part of a complicated corporate structure.<\/p>\n<p>None of those facts alone proved criminal conduct.<\/p>\n<p>Together, however, they concerned her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest danger,\u201d Dana said, \u201cmay not be a lawsuit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPanic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word settled heavily in the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who are financially trapped sometimes become reckless,\u201d she continued. \u201cThe storage-unit incident matters. The attempt to question your mental capacity matters.
